A Study on the Spot Welding and Fatigue Design of High Strength Steel Sheets for Light Weight Vehicle Body (경량 차체용 고장력 강판의 Spot 용접과 피로설계에 관한 연구)

  • The recent tendency in the automobile industries is toward light weighting vehicle body to improve the problems by environmental pollution as well as improving fuel cost. The effective way to reduce the weight of vehicle body seems to be application of new materials for body structure and such trend is remarkable. Among the various materials for vehicle body, stainless steel sheet (for example, 301L and 304L), TRIP steel and cold rolled steel sheets are under the interests. However, in order to guarantee reliability of new material and to establish the long life design criteria of body structure, it is important and require condition to assess spot weldability of them and fatigue strength of spot welded lap joints which were fabricated under optimized spot welding condition. And, recently, a new issue in the design of the spot welded structure is to predict economically fatigue design criterion without additional fatigue tests. In general, for fatigue design of the spot-welded thin sheet structure, additional fatigue tests according to the welding condition, material, joint type, and fatigue loading condition are generally required. This indicates that much cost and time for it should be consumed. Therefore, in this paper, the maximum stresses at nugget edge of spot weld were calculated through nonlinear finite element analysis first. And next, obtained the ${\Delta}P-N_{f}$ relation through the actual fatigue tests on spot welded lap joints of similar and dissimilar high strength steel sheets. And then, the ${\Delta}P-N_{f}$ relation was rearranged in the ${\Delta}{\sigma}-N_{f}$ relation. From this ${\Delta}{\sigma}-N_{f}$ relation, developed the fatigue design technology for spot welded lap joints of them welded using the optimized welding conditions.

Influence of Ag nano-powder additions on the superconducting properties of Mg $B_2$ materials

  • Silver nano-powder was added to Ma $B_2$ to make (Ag)$_{(x)wt.%}$(Mg $B_2$)$_{(l00-x)wt.%}$ (A $g_{x}$-Mg $B_2$) (10 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 50) composite superconductors to investigate the effect of the Ag nano-powder on the vortex pinning. Pellets made out of the mixed powder were put inside stainless steel tubes, which were sintered at 85$0^{\circ}C$ in Ar atmosphere. No impurity phase was identified for as-rolled samples. However, both the Mg $B_2$ and the A $g_{x}$-Mg $B_2$ composite pellets, when sintered, contain small amount of Mg $B_4$ and MgAg impurity phases. From the magnetization study, it was found that the flux pinning was improved in the high magnetic field region (> 3 T) only when 10w/o Ag was added to Mg $B_2$. The "two step" structures in ZFC M(T) curve gradually increased as the amount of Ag added increased. Pinning centers can be created by adding a suitable amount of Ag nano-powder which is not too large to increase the decoupling between the Mg $B_2$ grains.crease the decoupling between the Mg $B_2$ grains.

Micro Channel Forming with Ultra Thin Metal Foil (초미세 금속 박판의 마이크로 채널 포밍)

  • Our research dealt with micro fabrication using micro forming process. The goal of the research was to establish the limit of forming process concerning the size of forming material and formed shape. Flat-rolled ultra thin metallic foils of pure copper(3.0 and $1.0{\mu}m$ in thickness)and stainless steel($2.5{\mu}m$ in thickness) were used for forming material. We obtained the various shapes of micro channels as using designed forming process. $12-14{\mu}m$ wide and $9{\mu}m$ deep channels were made on $3.0{\mu}m$ thick foil and $6{\mu}m$ wide and $3{\mu}m$deep channels were made on $1.0{\mu}m$ thick foil. Si wafer die for forming was fabricated by using etching technique. And the relation of etching time and die dimension was investigated for fabricating precisely die groove. For the forming, die and metal foil were vacuum packed and the forming was conducted with a cold isostatic press. The formed channels were examined in terms of their dimension, surface qualities and potential for defects. Base on the examinations, formability of ultra thin metallic foil was also discussed. Finally, we compared the forming result with simulation. The result of research showed that metal forming technology is promising to produce micro parts.

A New Spin Filter for High Density Culture and Ethanol Production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae

  • A new spin filter consisting of $50{\mu}m$ (nominal pore size) depth fitters rolled on a stainless steel grid was developed, using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model suspension cell to evaluate the spin filter performance. In a 1.8-1 fermentor with a rotation speed of 300 rpm and perfusion rate of 4 ml/min, a cell concentration of 49 g/l and ethanol concentration of 45 g/l from 100 g/l glucose could be obtained in a perfusion culture. The major mechanisms for cell separation used by the large-pore spin filter appeared to be centrifugal force and pivotal movement of the cells in the spin filter.

  • The damping capacity and strength of Fe-2Al-26Mn alloys have been studied for the development of new materials with high strength and damping capacity. Particularly, the effect of ${\alpha}'\;and\;{\varepsilon}$ martensite phase, which constitutes the microstructure of cold rolled Fe-Al-Mn alloys, has been investigated in terms of the strength and damping capacity of the alloys. The damping capacity rises with increasing the degree of cold rolling and reveals the maximum value at 25% reduction. The damping capacity is strongly affected by the volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite, while the other phases, such as ${\alpha}'$ martensite and austenite phase, actually exhibit little effect on damping capacity. Considering that tensile strength increases and elongation decreases with increasing the volume fraction of ${\alpha}'$ martensite, it is proved that tensile strength is mainly affected by the amount of ${\alpha}'$ martensite.

Mechanical Properties of Al/Al2O3 Composite Fabricated by a Powder-in Sheath Rolling Method (분말시스압연법에 의해 제조된 Al/Al2O3 복합재료의 기계적 성질)

  • The powder-in sheath rolling was applied to the fabrication of $Al/Al_2O_3$ composite. A stainless steel tube with outer diameter of 12 mm and wall thickness of 1 mm was used as a sheath. Mixture of aluminum powder and $Al/Al_2O_3$ particles of which volume content was varied from 5 to 20 vol.% was filled in the tube by tap filling and then rolled to 75% reduction at ambient temperature. The re]]ed specimen was sintered at 56$0^{\circ}C$ for 0.5 hr. The $Al/Al_2O_3$ composite fabricated by the sheath rolling and subsequent sintering showed the relative density higher than 0.96. The tensile strength of the composite increased with the volume content of $Al_2O_3$ particles, and it reached a maximum of 90 MPa which is 1.5 times higher than unreinforced material. The elongation decreased with the volume content of $Al_2O_3$ particles. It is concluded that the powder-in sheath rolling is an effective method for fabrication of $Al/Al_2O_3$ composite.

  • Sendzimir rolling mill is widely used for rolling hard materials such as stainless steel due to its small work roll diameter and shape controllability using two effective actuators, AS-U-Roll crown adjustment and lst. intermediate roll shifting. However, in comparison with 4-high or 6-high mills, it is noteasy to get good strip or excellent flatness because Z-mill has small diameter of work rolls which are easily deformed by load. A new mathematical model based on the method of dividing roll and strip into multo-portions was used to develop strip profile prediction software. Using the developed software, several influencing factors related to rolled strip profile for Z-Mill were tested analytically and characterized for the effective shape control. The effects of adjusting shape control actuators of Z-Mill on strip profile were also examined and discussed in detail.

Properties of TiN Films Fabricated by Oblique Angle Deposition (빗각 증착으로 제조된 TiN 박막의 특성)

  • Oblique angle deposition (OAD) is a physical vapor deposition where incident vapor flux arrives at non-normal angles. It has been known that tilting the substrate changes the properties of the film, which is thought to be a result of morphological change of the film. In this study, OAD has been applied to prepare single and multilayer TiN films by cathodic arc deposition. TiN films have been deposited on cold-rolled steel sheets and stainless steel sheet. The deposition angle as well as substrate temperature and substrate bias was changed to investigate their effects on the properties of TiN films. TiN films were analyzed by color difference meter, scanning electron microscopy, nanoindenter and x-ray diffraction. The color of TiN films was not much changed according to the deposition conditions. The slanted and zigzag structures were observed from the single and multilayer films. The relation between substrate tilting angle (${\alpha}$) and the growth column angle (${\beta}$) followed the equation of $tan{\alpha}=2tan{\beta}$. The indentation hardness of TiN films deposited by OAD was low compared with the ones prepared at normal angle. However, it has been found that $H^3/E^2$ ratio of 3-layer TiN films prepared at OAD condition was a little higher than the ones prepared at normal angle, which can confirm the robustness of prepared films.

Effect of Groove Shapes on Mechanical Properties of STS316L Repaired by Direct Energy Deposition (직접 에너지 적층을 통한 STS316L 소재의 보수 공정에서 그루브 형상이 기계적 특성에 미치는 효과)

  • This study explores the effects of different pre-machining conditions on the deposition characteristics and mechanical properties of austenitic stainless steel samples repaired using direct energy deposition (DED). In the DED repair process, defects such as pores and cracks can occur at the interface between the substrate and deposited material. In this study, we varied the shape of the pre-machined zone for repair in order to prevent cracks from occurring at the slope surface. After repairs by the DED process, macro-scale cracks were observed in samples that had been pre-machined with elliptic and trapezoidal grooves. In addition, it was not possible to completely prevent micro-crack generation on the sloped interfaces, even in the capsule-type grooved sample. From observation of the fracture surfaces, it was found that the cracks around the inclined interface were due to a lack of fusion between the substrate and the powder material, which led to low tensile properties. The specimen with the capsule-type groove provided the highest tensile strength and elongation (respective of 46% and 571% compared to the trapezoidal grooved specimen). However, the tensile properties were degraded compared to the non-repaired specimen (as-hot rolled material). The fracture characteristics of the repaired specimens were determined by the cracks at the sloped interfaces. These cracks grew and coalesced with each other to form macro-cracks, they then coalesced with other cracks and propagated to the substrate, causing final fracture.
