  • In general, the pitch momentum biased system that induces inherently nutational motion in roll/yaw plane, has been adapted for geosynchronous communications satellites. This paper discusses the method of roll attitude control using yaw axis momentum management method for a low earth orbit(LEO) satellite which is a pitch momentum biased system equipped with only two reaction wheels. The robustness of wheel momentum management method with PI-controller is investigated comparing with wheel torque control method. The transfer function of roll/yaw axis momentum management system that is useful for attitude controller design is derived. The disturbance effect of roll/yaw axis momentum management system for attitude control is investigated to identify design parameters such as magnitude of momentum bias and to get the insight for controller design. As an example, the PID controller design result of momentum management system for roll/yaw axis control is provided and the simulation results are presented to provide further physical insight into the momentum management system.

  • Cornering maneuvers with reduced body roll and without comfort loss are important requirements for car manufacturers. An electric active roll control(ARC) system controls the body roll angle by using motor-driven actuators installed at the centers of the front and rear stabilizer bars. Co-simulation using the Matlab/Simulink controller model and the CarSim vehicle model was proposed to evaluate the performance of the ARC control algorithm. To validate the performance of the ARC actuator and system, bench tests and vehicle tests were proposed.

  • This paper presents unified chassis control (UCC) to improve the vehicle lateral stability. The unified chassis control implies combined control of active front steering (AFS), electronic stability control (ESC) and continuous damping control (CDC). A direct yaw moment controller based on a 2-D bicycle model is designed by using sliding mode control law. A direct roll moment controller based on a 2-D roll model is designed. The computed direct yaw moment and the direct roll moment are generated by AFS, ESP and CDC control modules respectively. A control authority of the AFS and the ESC is determined by tire slip angle. Computer simulation is conducted to evaluate the proposed integrated chassis controller by using the Matlab, simulink and the validated vehicle simulator. From the simulation results, it is shown that the proposed unified chassis control can provide with improved performance over the modular chassis control.

  • The results were obtained with changes according to the surface roughness of work roll and method to make the peak count on the roll in the temper rolling, and factors to affect to the work roll surface in actual rolling machine(ie. Temper mill). Conclusions are as follows. 1. E.D.T(Electro-discharge texturing)roll is more uniform roughness distribution than shot blasted roll and it's life time is two timees longer than that of shot blasted because it has more sine wave roughness. 2. The higher peak count of surface roughness, the more time is necessary to work roll texturing In shot blasting method, Surface roughness is relating to the grit size, impeller speed and hardness of roll material, But is can't control the peak count. 3. In shot blast texturing, Surface roughness of temper rolled strip which is transfered surface roughness of work roll is more ununiform than that of E.D.T roll 4. E.D.T roll has more uniform than the shot blasted roll and has more peak count than that of shot blasted roll. The surface of painted strip to image clarity is superior to that of shot blasted roll because E.D.T roll has more peak count and smooth surface.

  • It is difficult to find out the kinematic characteristics of a vehicle suspension without the usage of CAE software. The application of CAE software into suspension kinematics and dynamics yields the more precise knowledge on the chassis design. In this study, the influence of the suspension geometry on the handling performances of a large-sized bus is investigated using the DADS software. The front and rear suspension of a large-sized bus are a rigid axle suspension with the four control links. The elastokinematic analysis is performed to evaluate the roll characteristics of the front and rear suspension. The elastokinematic responses are evaluated in terms of the roll center height and roll steer for various geometric parameters. The roll center height is mainly dependent on the vertical displacement of a panhard rod and the vertical displacements of lower control links affect the roll steer of a rear suspension. The parameter study with the change of rear suspension geometry is conducted to investigate the vehicle handling performances. This parameter study shows that the vertical displacement and orientation of a panhard rod influence the handling performances of a large-sized bus significantly.

  • Winding is an integral operation in almost every roll-to-roll continuous process and center-winding is suitable and general scheme in the winding system. However, the internal stresses within center-wound rolls can cause damage such as buckling, spoking, cinching, etc. It is therefore necessary to analyze the relationship between taper tension in winding section and internal stress distribution within center-wound roll to prevent the winding failure. In this study, an optimal taper tension control method with parabolic taper tension profile for producing high quality wound roll was developed. The new logic was designed from analyzing the winding mechanism by using the stress model in center-wound rolls. The performance of the proposed taper tension profile was verified experimentally.

  • High-finned tubes have good thermal conductivity and have better cooling efficiency than plain tubes or low-fined tubes due to bigger air contact area. During high-fined tubes are manufactured by roll forming, the main technique is illustrated to optimizing primary material(copper pipe), optimized die matrix designing technique for roll forming, control manufacturing speed to develop productivity etc. In this study, a roll forming system was developed in oder to produce high-finned tube. Also a multi-step roll forming die was designed & built to produce high-finned tube that has over 10 mm fin height. And then, roll forming test using copper pipe was performed to produce high-finned tube. Roll forming process for producing highfinned tube was optimized by analyzing and adjusting misrostructure, hardness, and surface roughness of roll formed high-fined tube.

  • A bearingless linear motor(BLLM) which consists of two stators and a common mover is able to levitate and move its mover without any linear bearing or even additive windings. In the previous study, BLLM was actively controlled on the translation and pitch motion, while the roll motion is passively stable. In order to control the roll motion, this paper suggests adding active magnetic bearings(AMBs) at bottom of the mover in BLLM. The AMBs control the roll motion and also partially supports the weight of the mover. In this paper, magnetic forces generated by the AMBs are estimated by using an FEM model. Based on the analysis results, the bias current of the AMBs is determined and a PD controller is designed. Through an experimental levitation test, it was verified that roll motion is well controlled by AMB during levitation.

  • The rolling force and roll deformation behavior in the twin roll type strip continuous casting process has been computed to estimate the thermal charcteristics of a caster roll. To calculation of rolling force, the relationship between flow stress and strain for a roll material and casting alloy are assumed as a function of strain-rate and temperature because mechanical properties of a casting materials depends on tempera- ture. The three dimensional thermal dlastic-plastic analysis of a cooling roll has also been carried out to obtain a roll stress and plastic strain distributions with the commercial finite element analysis package of ANSYS. Temperature fields data of caster roll which are provided by authors were used to estimated of roll deformation. Roll life considering thermal cycle is calculated by using thermal elastic-plastic analysis results. Roll life is proposed as a terms of a roll revolution in the caster roll with and without fine failure model on the roll surface. To obtain of plastic strain distributions of caster roll, thermomechan- ical properties of roll sleeve with a copper alloy is obtained by uniaxial tensile test for variation of temperature.
