  • This study aims to examine two hypothetical models for the variables of students' environmental perspective. First hypothetical model is the mediating role of recognition and familiarity between aesthetic and negativistic perspectives. Second hypothetical model is the separate path from humanistic to dominionistic perspectives. One hundred four tenth grade students participated in this study. We used Pearson correlation, partial correlation, and path analysis to examine the fitness of hypothetical models. The findings showed that the mediating role of recognition and familiarity between aesthetic and negativistic perspectives were statistically accepted. To prevent students' bias for fancy or gross animals, the learning (for instance, recognition and familiarity) may play role in reducing the bias. Second, there were two differential paths from humanistic to dominionistic perspectives (ecologistic-naturalistic path and scientistic-utilitarian path). While ecologistic-naturalistic path does not reach dominionistic perspective, scientistic-utilitarian path does reach dominionistic perspective. To prevent students' dominionistic perspective for nature, they need to understand ecologistic-naturalistic minds for the nature.

  • A challenging research issue that has been one of growing importance to those working in human-computer interaction are to endow a machine with an emotional intelligence. Thus, emotion recognition technology plays an important role in the research area of human-computer interaction, and it allows a more natural and more human-like communication between human and computer. In this paper, we propose the multimodal emotion recognition system using face and speech to improve recognition performance. The distance measurement of the face-based emotion recognition is calculated by 2D-PCA of MCS-LBP image and nearest neighbor classifier, and also the likelihood measurement is obtained by Gaussian mixture model algorithm based on pitch and mel-frequency cepstral coefficient features in speech-based emotion recognition. The individual matching scores obtained from face and speech are combined using a weighted-summation operation, and the fused-score is utilized to classify the human emotion. Through experimental results, the proposed method exhibits improved recognition accuracy of about 11.25% to 19.75% when compared to the most uni-modal approach. From these results, we confirmed that the proposed approach achieved a significant performance improvement and the proposed method was very effective.

  • This study is designed to find out how the recognition of the listener's role affects listening in Korean language learning. We assumed that recognizing the role of the listener can focus on important information. To confirm our assumption, we conducted an experiment on 37 Koreans and 32 KSLs. Koreans and KSLs were divided into two groups depending on whether or not they recognize the role of the listener. The results showed that Koreans and KSLs who recognized the role of the listener were better at listening to important information, and Koreans who recognized the role of the listener were better at judging important information. This study suggests that the role of listeners as context apply to Korean listening education.

  • Facial expression recognition (FER) plays a very significant role in computer vision, pattern recognition, and image processing applications such as human computer interaction as it provides sufficient information about emotions of people. For video-based facial expression recognition, depth cameras can be better candidates over RGB cameras as a person's face cannot be easily recognized from distance-based depth videos hence depth cameras also resolve some privacy issues that can arise using RGB faces. A good FER system is very much reliant on the extraction of robust features as well as recognition engine. In this work, an efficient novel approach is proposed to recognize some facial expressions from time-sequential depth videos. First of all, efficient Local Binary Pattern (LBP) features are obtained from the time-sequential depth faces that are further classified by Generalized Discriminant Analysis (GDA) to make the features more robust and finally, the LBP-GDA features are fed into Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) to train and recognize different facial expressions successfully. The depth information-based proposed facial expression recognition approach is compared to the conventional approaches such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Independent Component Analysis (ICA), and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) where the proposed one outperforms others by obtaining better recognition rates.

  • English vowels play an important role in verbal communication. However, Korean students tend to experience difficulty pronouncing a certain set of vowels despite extensive education in English. The aim of this study is to apply speech recognition software to evaluate Korean students' pronunciation of English vowels in minimal pair words and then to examine acoustic characteristics of the pairs in order to check their pronunciation problems. Thirty female Korean college students participated in the recording. Speech recognition rates were obtained to examine which English vowels were correctly pronounced. To compare and verify the recognition results, such acoustic analyses as the first and second formant trajectories and durations were also collected using Praat. The results showed an overall recognition rate of 54.7%. Some students incorrectly switched the tense and lax counterparts and produced the same vowel sounds for qualitatively different English vowels. From the acoustic analyses of the vowel formant trajectories, some of these vowel pairs were almost overlapped or exhibited slight acoustic differences at the majority of the measurement points. On the other hand, statistical analyses on the first formant trajectories of the three vowel pairs revealed significant differences throughout the measurement points, a finding that requires further investigation. Durational comparisons revealed a consistent pattern among the vowel pairs. The author concludes that speech recognition and analysis software can be useful to diagnose pronunciation problems of English-language learners.

  • As this study is the descriptive research study that tries to present the basic data aiming to establish a role of nurses for the Community Welfare Center, by surveying the role expectation and the degree of role performance towards nurses for the Community Welfare Center that nurses for the Community Welfare Center and social workers recognize, it carried out the Questionnaire research targeting nurses who are working for the Community Welfare Center located in Seoul and social workers of institutions where nurses are working, and then analyzed the results, and the study results are as follows. Both the group of nurses and the group of social workers were highly recognizing the necessity and the importance of nurses for the Community Welfare Center, and expected that more effective services will be possible to be offered by means of that nurses do work for the Community Welfare Center. However, compared to the degree that social workers recognize a nurses specialty, the nurses thought that their specialty is not acknowledged in the Community Welfare Center, and even in case of duty friction between groups being felt while social workers and nurses are working together, nurses were experiencing further friction of duties. While nurses are well recognizing their roles, they are statistically and significantly recognizing the degree of role performance lower than expected, thus the difference between the role expectation and the role performance could be seen. Also, the group of nurses showed the higher role expectation towards nurses than the group of social workers, and in relation to roles of a counselor, referral resource, an advocator, an educator, a case manager, a and a coordinator, the degree of role expectation by the group of nurses is statistically and significantly higher than the group of social workers, thus it could be seen that there is difference in the expectation degree between both groups, as to a role of nurses for the Community Welfare Center. In particular, as to a role of universally medical services, the expectations between nurses and social workers showed mutual agreement, but in relation to a role of nurses for community in the more expanded sphere, social workers did not show a receptive attitude, thus it was indicating that there exists an element of role conflict. In relation to the role performance of nurses for the Community Welfare Center, nurses were feeling the disorder degree more than social workers, in all items of disorder factors, and there was difference in recognition between nurses and social workers, as to the priority of disorder factors. Because of, through this study, having been found the difference in recognition of role expectation, the degree of role performance, and a disorder factor between nurses and social workers, as to the nurses for the Community Welfare Center, it is required a study with a more diversified method on a role of nurses for the Community Welfare Center.

  • So far there have been many researches on machine-based recognition of handwritten digit. But we have not yet attained the level of performance that can be satisfactory to men. The dissatisfaction with the performance of machine comes from not only the low accuracy of recognition but also the dissimilarity of the recognition results between man and machine. To reduce the difference of machine from man we first made an experiment with the human recognition of handwritten digits and then inquiry into the way of the human recognition that makes the results of men different from that of machine. We found out the attributes that play an important role in the human recognition process through the analysis of the experimental results like uni- and bi-directional confused pairs of digits, several ones unmixed up with another and the redundancy of mis-recognition, and proposed the approach direction to be able to improve the accuracy of the machine-based recognition, and furthermore the similarity in the recognition results of men and machine on the basis of the found facts above.

  • Galectins, a family of ß-galactoside-binding lectins, have emerged as soluble mediators in infected cells and pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) responsible for evoking and regulating innate immunity. The present study aimed to evaluate the role of galectin-1 in the host immune response of redlip mullet (Liza haematocheilia). We established a cDNA database for redlip mullet, and the cDNA sequence of galectin-1 (LhGal-1) was characterized. In silico analysis was performed, and the spatial and temporal expression patterns in gills and blood in response to lipopolysaccharide polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid, and Lactococcus garvieae were estimated via quantitative real-time PCR. Functional assays were conducted using recombinant protein to investigate carbohydrate binding, bacterial binding, and bacterial agglutination activity. LhGal-1 was composed of 135 amino acids. Conserved motifs (H-NPR, -N- and -W-E-R) within the carbohydrate recognition domain were found in LhGal-1. The tissue distribution revealed that the healthy stomach expressed high levels of LhGal-1. The temporal monitoring of LhGal-1 mRNA expression in the gill and blood showed its significant upregulation in response to immune challenges with different stimulants. rLhGal-1 exhibited binding activity in response to carbohydrates and bacteria. Moreover, the agglutination of rLhGal-1 against Escherichia coli was observed. Collectively, our findings suggest that LhGal-1 may function as a PRR in redlip mullet. Furthermore, LhGal-1 can be considered a significant gene to play a protective role in redlip mullet immune system.
