Role of KOH in the One-Stage KOH Activation of Cellulosic Biomass

  • The role of KOH in the one-stage KOH-activation of rice straws was studied using FTIR, XPS, TGA, and DTG techniques. It was found that at the impregnation, KOH extracts to some extent the lignin component from rice straw and reacts with hydroxyl groups. On heat-treatment, the impregnated KOH facilitates intermolecular condensation reaction on one hand but retards the thermal degradation of cellulose molecules on the other hand. The oxygen-containing surface functional groups newly created by oxidation of KOH may facilitate the bulk, not controlled, consumption of carbon atoms so that the effective porosities may not be able to be developed by the one-stage activation process.

Role of peripheral vestibular receptors in the control of blood pressure following hypotension

  • Hypotension is one of the potential causes of dizziness. In this review, we summarize the studies published in recent years about the electrophysiological and pharmacological mechanisms of hypotension-induced dizziness and the role of the vestibular system in the control of blood pressure in response to hypotension. It is postulated that ischemic excitation of the peripheral vestibular hair cells as a result of a reduction in blood flow to the inner ear following hypotension leads to excitation of the central vestibular nuclei, which in turn may produce dizziness after hypotension. In addition, excitation of the vestibular nuclei following hypotension elicits the vestibulosympathetic reflex, and the reflex then regulates blood pressure by a dualcontrol (neurogenic and humoral control) mechanism. In fact, recent studies have shown that peripheral vestibular receptors play a role in the control of blood pressure through neural reflex pathways. This review illustrates the dual-control mechanism of peripheral vestibular receptors in the regulation of blood pressure following hypotension.

Role of Protein Kinase C $\delta$ in an Early Stage of Coxsackievirus-B3-Induced Apoptosis in HeLa Cells

  • CVB3 is a virulent human pathogen that induces myocarditis and ultimately dilated cardiomyopathy. Although several apoptotic factors are involved in the cell death induced by CVB3, the upstream signal transduction factors of CVB3-induced apoptosis are still unclear. We explored and characterized the role of PKC $\delta$ in CVB3-infected cells. PKC $\delta$ was cleaved after CVB3 infection and was activated at 6 h postinfection. PKC $\delta$ was also translocated into the nucleus via mitochondria after CVB3 infection, and overexpression of wild-type PKC $\delta$ reduced the apoptotic cell death caused by CVB3. These results indicate that PKC $\delta$ has an antiapoptotic role in CVB3 infection.

  • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is responsible for approximately 350 million chronic infections worldwide and is a leading cause of broad-spectrum liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. Although it has been well established that adaptive immunity plays a critical role in viral clearance, the pathogenetic mechanisms that cause liver damage during acute and chronic HBV infection remain largely known. This review describes our current knowledge of the immune-mediated pathogenesis of HBV infection and the role of immune cells in the liver injury during hepatitis B.

Hippo-YAP/TAZ signaling in angiogenesis

  • Angiogenesis is a complex, multistep process involving dynamic changes in endothelial cell (EC) shapes and behaviors, especially in specialized cell types such as tip cells (with active filopodial extensions), stalk cells (with less motility) and phalanx cells (with stable junction connections). The Hippo-Yes-associated protein (YAP)/ transcription activator with PDZ binding motif (TAZ) signaling plays a critical role in development, regeneration and organ size by regulating cell-cell contact and actin cytoskeleton dynamics. Recently, with the finding that YAP is expressed in the front edge of the developing retinal vessels, Hippo-YAP/TAZ signaling has emerged as a new pathway for blood vessel development. Intriguingly, the LATS1/2-mediated angiomotin (AMOT) family and YAP/TAZ activities contribute to EC shapes and behaviors by spatiotemporally modulating actin cytoskeleton dynamics and EC junction stability. Herein, we summarize the recent understanding of the role of Hippo-YAP/TAZ signaling in the processes of EC sprouting and junction maturation in angiogenesis.

한의학과 중의학 담당행정조직의 기능과 역할 비교 연구 (A Comparative Study on Traditional Medicine in Korea and China;Administrative Structure, Role and Function)

  • Because of the changes of a variety of aspects of disease theory alternative to standard medicine, demand for traditional medicine has increased. This study was undertaken to grasp and compare traditional-medicine administrative structure, functions and role between Korea and China. According to our research, both nations promote policy related to traditional-medicine, yet there are various differences because of each nation's scale, political structure, medical system, etc. Especially, compare to the Korean government, the Chinese government not only has paid more attention to traditional medicine but also established and promoted a synthesis development strategy for a long time. Additionally, there is weakness in Korea's traditional medicine policy compared to the Chinese's Synthetic development-strategy, which is the Oriental-policy Department and Korea Food&Drug administration. Therefore, to make up for the weakness, they will have to organize their role better and make a long-term development-strategy plan for traditional medicine.

Odontogenic Ameloblast-Associated Protein (Odam) Plays Crucial Roles in Osteoclast Differentiation via Control of Actin Ring Formation

  • Purpose: In osteoclast differentiation, actin-rich membrane protrusions play a crucial role in cell adhesion. Odontogenic ameloblast-associated protein (Odam) contributes to cell adhesion by inducing actin rearrangement. Odam-mediated RhoA activity may play a significant role in multinucleation of osteoclasts. However, the precise function of Odam in osteoclast cell adhesion and differentiation remains largely unknown. Here, we identify a critical role for Odam in inducing osteoclast adhesion and differentiation. Materials and Methods: The expression of Odam in osteoclasts was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Primary mouse bone marrow and RAW264.7 cells were used to test the cell adhesion and actin ring formation induced by Odam. Result: Odam was expressed in osteoclasts around alveolar bone. Odam transfection induced actin filament rearrangement and cell adhesion compared with the control or collagen groups. Overexpression of Odam promoted actin stress fiber remodeling and cell adhesion, resulting in increased osteoclast fusion. Conclusion: These results suggest that Odam expression in primary mouse osteoclasts and RAW264.7 cells promotes their adhesion, resulting in the induction of osteoclast differentiation.

전장관리체계 운용을 위한 전투지휘용 차량의 성능개량 개념 (A Concept Study on Improving Command Post Vehicles for Operating Battle Management System)

  • So far, Korean command post vehicles(CPs) have used voice-only radio communication among the mechanized troop units such MBTs and IFVs, etc. But digital data communication technology should be introduced to improve mission success capabilities and accommodate integrated combat capabilities through increasing SA(situation Awareness), or spatiotemporal synchronization of military operation in battle field environment. Therefore, conventional CPs, which have been operated without digital network, urgently needs to mount a battle management system which furnish with tactical information network, considering that korean new MBTs or new IFVs will be fielded soon. This study suggests some performance enhancement method which might be applicable to CPs which have a role of connecting Battalion unit to Brigade C4I system.

종양응급 상황에서의 방사선치료의 역할 (Role of Radiation Therapy in Oncologic Emergencies)

  • Purpose. Radiation therapy for oncologic emergencies is an important modality in the management of cancer patients. The aim of the present study was to review the roles of RT in oncologic emergencies based on literature review. Methods. The oncologic emergencies requiring rapid treatment include superior vena cava syndrome, spinal cord compression, brain metastasis, and bone metastasis. We reviewed the literatures on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of oncologic emergencies. Results. In this literature review, radiation therapy among treatment modalities for oncologic emergencies has been shown to be fast and very effective treatment modality for oncologic emergencies. Conclusions. Based on this review, we conclude that the literature provides support for the role of radiation therapy in the situation of oncologic emergencies. As the number of cancer patients increase, the prevalence of oncologic emergencies will increase. In the future, the development of RT techniques will provide the improvement of not only patient's quality of life but also the survival.

Chronic Health Conditions, Depression, and the Role of Financial Wellbeing: How Middle Age Group (45-64) and Older Adults (65-79) Differ?

  • This study investigates the association between chronic health conditions (CHD) and depression with a focus on the mediating effect of financial strain. We tested if age makes any difference in the effect of CHD and financial strain on depression. The data comes from the 2006 Korea Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) collected by the Institute of Korean Labor Research. The sample consisted of information from 8,961 individuals ages 45-79. Separate analyses were done for middle-age (45-64) and older-adult groups (65-79). There were significant financial portfolio differences among CHD patients and non-CHD, for both age groups, that may constitute the impact of a health event on financial wellbeing; in addition, the associations of CHD on depressive symptoms were different by age groups. The mediating effect of financial wellbeing on the association between CHD and depressive symptoms was verified; in addition, the role of financial wellbeing on the association was especially strong for the older-adult group. The effect of CHD on depression was contingent on the amount of net assets and annual personal income. Implications are discussed based on the findings.
