The Role of Flagship Universities in Developing Countries: The Case of the University of the Philippines

  • In the face of globalization and other recent developments, flagship universities in developing countries must deal with significant challenges to come up with new strategies to serve their respective countries better. They have to confront the issue of international university ranking and its implication on social relevance. They have to remain at the forefront of research as research universities and must lead in promoting internationalization of higher education. More importantly, flagship universities must engage actively in industry-academe-government collaboration as a necessary approach towards strengthening their nations’ innovation systems. This paper is at best conceptual and takes a cursory look at the role of flagship universities in developing countries, citing the case of the University of the Philippines and its strategy towards fulfilling its role as the country’s only national university.

성역할 태도와 맞벌이 태도의 차이에 관한 연구: 기혼·유자녀 가구를 중심으로 한 유형화 (A Study on the Difference between Gender Role Attitude and Dual Income Attitude: Focusing on Classification of Married Couple with Children)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to empirically verify the difference between traditional gender role attitude and realistic dual earner attitude. Most preceding studies analyzed gender role attitude by summated rating scale while few studies have been conducted on the difference between traditional gender role attitude and dual earner attitude. Method: By using the 9th Korea Welfare Panel Data (year 2014), this study extracted households of married couples and with children in working age (18 through 64 years of age) who are the main subjects in work-family relationship. First, this study classified traditional group and modern group in their gender role attitude and passive group and active group in their dual earner attitude and by crossing these attitudes, drew out 4 gender role/dual earner attitudes. For analysis, this study investigated frequency of attitude types through descriptive statistics. By conducting ANOVA, study verified if there are significant differences in the satisfaction with family relationship depending on the types of gender role/dual earner attitudes. Lastly, study examined the effect of socio-economic status and demographic characteristics on the types of gender role/dual earner attitudes by conducting multi-nominal logistic regression analysis. Results: As the result of analysis, first, half of respondents belonged to 'equal-role-oriented type' who has modern gender role attitude and active dual earner attitude. However, there were not a few 'dual-earner-avoiding type' who has modern gender role attitude but passive dual earner attitude and 'incongruous attitude type' who has traditional gender role attitude but active dual earner attitude. Next, 'incongruous attitude type' had significantly low level of satisfaction with overall family life, relationship with spouse and relationship with children than other attitude types. Lastly, those whose incomes belong to poor strata, those who are high school graduates and lower, males and those who are over the age of 60 had significantly higher probability of belonging to 'incongruous attitude type.' Conclusion: The results of analysis demonstrate that the difference between gender role attitude and dual earner attitude is an important matter and since 'incongruous attitude type' exhibits low level of satisfaction with family relationship, scrupulous policy approaches are required for those who have high possibility of belonging to 'incongruous attitude type.'

역할모델이 한·중 대학생들의 기업가정신 및 사회적 역량에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 - 사회적 역량의 매개효과를 중심으로 (The Effect of Role Models on Entrepreneurship and Social Competence of Korean and Chinese University Students - Focused on Mediating Effect of Social Competence)

  • 기업가정신은 지역 및 국가경제 활성화 측면에서 전 세계적으로 많은 관심을 받아오고 있다. 본 연구는 아시아지역 대학생들의 기업가정신에 영향을 미치는 핵심 요인들을 살펴보기 위해 진행되었다. 이를 위해 한국과 중국대학생들을 대상으로 역할모델이 대학생들의 사회적 역량 증진 및 기업가정신 함양에 미치는 영향을 실증분석 하였다. 또한 창업과정에 있어 사회적 역량의 중요성에 비추어 사회적 역량의 매개효과를 함께 검증하였다. 본 연구에는 한국과 중국 각각 3곳 대학교의 대학생들이 참가, 한국 224부, 중국 216부의 표본을 최종 확보하여 4개의 가설 검증에 이용하였다. 가설검증은 위계적 다중회귀분석방법(PASW Statistic 18)을 이용하였다. 검증결과 역할모델은 한국과 중국대학생 모두 기업가정신과 사회적 역량에 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 사회적 역량도 양국 대학생들의 기업가정신에 유의한 정(+)의 영향을 미침을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 사회적 역량은 역할모델과 기업가정신 사이에 부분매개효과를 갖는 것을 알 수 있었다. 마지막으로 본 연구결과의 이론적 기여 및 교육당국과 정책입안자들을 위한 실무적 시사점과 제안사항을 제시해 두었다.

어린이집 보조교사의 역할기대 및 업무수행에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Role Expectation and Job Performance of Childcare Teaching Assistants)

  • The present research aimed to assess role expectations and job performance of childcare teaching assistants at daycare centers. In order to describe participants' experiences, qualitative data were analyzed using Van Manen's phenomenological approach. The findings showed that childcare teaching assistants suffered a gap between their role expectations and reality. They felt diverse emotions and doubt about their professionalism through interactions with teachers in charge, directors, parents, and children. The participants claimed that the Nuri curriculum teaching assistants system should be improved to achieve better quality childcare programs. The implications to support the Nuri curriculum teaching assistants system were discussed in depth.

예비 부모세대의 결혼관과 자녀관 그리고 성역할관에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Values of Marriage, Child and Sex Role between Male and Female College Students)

  • The purpose of this study was to predict the stability of the future marriage by understanding the values of marriage, child and sex role among pre-parents. For this purpose, the values of marriage, child and sex roles were compared between male (N = 340) and female (N = 363) university students, Tajeon. The data were analyzed by statistical methods, such as mean, standard deviation, t-Test, F-Test, Multiple-Regression and Duncan Multiple Range Test. The results of this study were as follows ; 1) There were significant differences between male and female students in the values of marriage, child and sex role. 2) The most important demographical variable influencing to the values of marriage, child and sex role was sex. 3) With reagard to the collections between the values of marriage and the positive values of child were negative. But the correlations between the values of marriage and the preference for a son were positive. The correlations between the preference for a son and the values of sex role were also positive. With reagard to the correlations between the values of marriage and the values of sex roles were positive.

다문화가족 방문교육지도사의 자기효능감과 직무만족도의 관계에서 역할모호성의 매개효과 (The Mediating Effect of Role Ambiguity on the Relationship between Self-efficacy and Job Satisfaction of Visiting Supervisors for Multicultural Families)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of role ambiguity on the relationship between self-efficacy and job satisfaction of visiting supervisors for multicultural families. The subjects were 243 visiting supervisors for multicultural families. The data were analyzed with SPSS Win 15.0 using Cronbach's ${\alpha}$, hierarchical multiple regression and path analysis. The findings showed that both self-efficacy and role ambiguity exerted a significant effect on the job satisfaction of visiting supervisors for multicultural families. Further, it is important to note that the effect of self-efficacy on job satisfaction was mediated by role ambiguity. The study discussed implications in terms of job satisfaction of visiting supervisors for multicultural families.

The Influences of Work-family Conflict and Sex-role Identity on Married Female Teacher's Job Involvement

  • This study investigated if and how work-family conflict and sex-role identity influence married female teachers' job involvement. The results of this study follow. First, married female teachers in the high work-family conflict group showed lower job involvement than that of those in the low work-family conflict group. The mean difference of job involvement between the high and low work-family conflict groups was not statistically significant. Second, the married female teachers with an Androgynous sex-role identity showed higher job involvement than those with a Feminine sex-role identity. Finally, the job involvement of Androgynous married female teachers was damaged less under high work-family conflict situations than that of Feminine married female teachers. These results imply that to increase married female teachers' job involvement, the improvement of physical/environmental conditions and psychological changes for women are necessary.

The Authenticity of Business to Business Salespersons on Consultative Selling Competence: The Role of Customer Orientation

  • Purpose - The study investigates the role of authenticity of B2B salespersons has on their consultative selling competence. The study also examines the mediating effect of customer orientation between the authenticity of B2B salespersons and their consultative selling competence, as well as the moderating role of trust in the buyer-seller exchange. Design/methodology/approach - This research utilized a covariance-based structural equation model technique. The study assessed the research model's moderation effects through a stepwise approach, which allowed for an examination of the moderating effect of trust in the buyer-seller relationship. Findings - As a result of structural equation analysis, this study found that the authenticity of B2B salespersons influences their consultative selling competence by mediating their customer orientation significantly. In addition, trust in the buyer-seller exchange plays a significant role as a moderating variable between customer orientation and competitive selling competence, but it is not significant as a moderating variable between the authenticity and customer orientation of B2B salespersons. Research implications or Originality - This research proposed the role of authenticity of the B2B salesperson as a key factor in the trust-based relationship and a key variable of consultative selling competence. The study has taken the research on the authenticity of the B2B salesperson one step further from the study of authenticity of the brand and the company's leadership.

산업간호교육과정이 간호학생의 산업간호사에 대한 역할인식에 미치는 영향 (Impact of the Independent Occupational Health Nursing Course to the Role Orientation of Baccalaureate Nursing Students)

  • Social trends influence the need for inclusion of basic concepts of occupational health into generic nursing education. Several techniques have been used to incorporate occupational health into baccalaureate programme. These include clinical preceptorships in employee health services, lectures on occupational health issues into community health nursing courses and the integration of occupational health concepts throughout the nursing curriculum and organize an independent course of occupational health nursing for two semester hours. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of this course to the role orientation of nursing students. In March 1998, pre-test was conducted with all 39 students. Post- test for the subjects and the survey for the other comparison group were conducted after the course in May. Structured questionnaires were distributed which were composed of 42 items related to the role of occupational health nurse and each item was measured on a scale of 1 to 5. Results are as follows: 1) The paired t-test supported the hypothesis that role orientation of students was improved through the occupational health nursing course (t=-3.93, p=.000), 2) As the result of t-test between the subject and the comparison group, the mean score of the role orientation in the case of subject was significantly higher than that of the comparison group(t=13.3449, p=.0005). The enlargement of occupational health nursing course must be a facilitating factor to the improvement of the role orientation of baccalaureate students. It is needed to measure occupational health nursing competence of them in the future.
