  • A comprehensive understanding is given for the hot-firing test results, which were obtained throughout the verification program of mono-propellant hydrazine rocket engines (thrusters) producing 0.95 lbf (4.2 N) of nominal steady-state thrust at an inlet pressure of 350 psia (2.41 Mpa). A scrutiny for the engine performance is made in terms of thrust and temperature behavior of steady state firing mode at the given propellant injection pressures: Pinj = 400, 250, 100, and 50 psi. The thrust and specific impulse are compared with a reference performance of 1-lbf standard rocket engines and their normalization procedure is introduced. A practical engineering approach to the data measurement and reduction is addressed, too.

  • This paper describes performance design of a solid rocket motor on which thrust cut-off system is installed, and evaluates performance of a rocket motor according to a size of TCO ports. TCO system installed on motors was made to carry out firing tests, and the trend of thrust due to various sizes of TCO port was analyzed to find the existence of the port size for maximum reversal thrust. Conservation equations were used to design performance of motors and to analyze test results. This technique for performance design will be usefully applied to the design of similar TCO systems.

  • A theoretical model for the calculation of chemical equilibrium composition of propellant combustion product is briefly presented for the performance analysis of monopropellant hydrazine rocket engine. Analysis result is compared to that of test and evaluation of 1-lbf class thruster and is scrutinized primarily from the view point of ammonia dissociation fraction. Chemical equilibrium composition and average molecular weight is additionally depicted according to the variation of propellant inlet pressures and the varying nozzle area ratio. The theoretical analysis is tried as a way of derivation of design parameters for mid- and large-thrust class of monopropellant rocket engines.

  • Small liquid rocket engine (SLRE) with calorimeter were developed and tested to evaluate cooling characteristics in the liquid rocket engine. Therefore, cooling performance analysis was performed to predict the heat transfer coefficient on gas side wall in 10 calorimeter channel. A heat transfer empirical formula was determined by results of firing test and computational simulation.

  • It is known that the adhesive interface testing of the rocket motor using the ultrasonic wave is superior to the other testing methods about the ability to economical detect the defects. But, the signal analysis of the ultrasonic wave takes a lot of time and efforts because the time interval of the transmitted pulse and the received pulse is too short to separate the reflected signals due to the multi-layers of the rocket motor. The ultrasonic testing of rocket motor have only applied to the automatic system about extremely limited areas like the debond in adhesive interface between the motor case and the insulator. In this study the new technique to detect the debond between the liner and the propellant using the property of the resonance and the lamb waves instead of the existing ultrasonic testing was described.

  • In this study, cooling characteristics of combustion gas were investigated by injecting liquid nitrogen into liquid rocket combustion chamber. A injection ring of liquid nitrogen was installed between a combustion chamber and a mixing chamber which was designed for mixing of combustion gas and nitrogen. At first, a ignition test of liquid rocket engine was conducted to verify a stable combustion process and 10 second combustion tests were successfully conducted. The results showed that combustion gas of LRE could be cooled by using liquid nitrogen.

  • The objective of IM rocket motor is to minimize the probability of inadvertent initiation and severity of subsequent collateral damage, hence it is important to define personnel and equipment survivability to a rocket motor accident. The violent response probability associated with shock, impact and thermal effects be minimized. And during production, transportation/storage and stack of rocket motor, sympathetic detonation, giving severe effects of the propagation of adverse reaction on its surroundings, be reduced. Hence Reaction type also based on reaction results of the overpressure, fragment throw and heat flux.

  • In this study, a thrust modulation through oxidizer mass flow rate control and internal ballistic analysis based on Whitmore and Chandlers' models was conducted on a blow-down hybrid rocket using nitrous oxide. The tank pressure prediction considering mass flow rate control of the self-pressuring oxidizer was conducted, and the results showed good agreements with experimental results. In order to verify the internal ballistic analysis, a ground combustion test using a 500 N class hybrid rocket was conducted, and it was confirmed that the experimental results and the analytical results were quite consistent in the chamber pressure and thrust, thereby, a modeling technique capable of predicting the thrust modulation performance is proposed.

  • Test equipment was designed and manufactured to evaluate thermal reaction characteristic of internal insulators of solid rocket motor. Test is allowed up to chamber pressure 2,500 psi, burn-time 100 s. A cross section of test sample part is quadrature, and various test samples can be comparable at the same time. Inner temperature of test sample can be measured by thermocouples during burning. Test was executed in condition of efficient average chamber pressure 1,000 psi, efficient burn-time 10 s and safety of equipment was confirmed. Basic data for understanding thermal characteristics of internal insulator, that is, pressure-time curve, temperature-time curve in the test sample, and thermal destruction thickness of test sample was gained successfully.
