  • Green Slope(F.F.R : Fabric Form Reinforcement Method) is one of an environmental slope protection method at steep cutting sites. This method is that soil and rock at the steep slope is fixed using the environmental Fabric Form, Nail, Rock Bolt and Rock Anchor, And then, the surfaces covered with grasses or weeds. This method will be satisfied both safe slope protection and natural environment appearance. Green Slope is a useful method of the construction sites of steep cutting slopes.

  • To evaluate rock bolt integrity, destructive test such as pull-out test has been commonly carried out. This method is known as time consuming, expensive, and inaccurate procedure. To improve destructive method, non-destructive techniques using transmitted guided ultrasonic waves were suggested. Note for the transmission method, the source for the generation of ultrasonic waves should be installed during the rock bolt construction. The purpose of this study is to investigate the reflection method using reflected guided ultrasonic waves to evaluate the integrity of the rock bolt grouted, and to compare the results evaluated by the reflection and transmission methods. The guided waves are generated by PZT element and received by AE sensor. The measured signals are analyzed by the wavelet transform. The results show that the energy velocities of guided ultrasonic waves increase with the defect ratio in both transmission and reflection method. The reflection method produces the lower velocity in all defect ratio. This research demonstrates that the reflection method may be suitable and easer method for the field tests.

  • From the result of precise field investigation and stability examination for the cut slope, following results were acquired. 1. The cause of the cut slope collapse seems that it came from complex actions such as the weathering rock itself, existing fault zone and crack from excessive blasting. 2. As a result of analysis, it is appeared that the cut slope can be in danger of plane destruction. 3. The reinforcement force is decided by the result of limit equilibrium analysis. 4. For reinforcement the method after relaxing the slope was judged as the most proper method to the cut slope as comparing/analyzing Rock Anchor, Rock Bolt and method after relaxing the slope.

  • For the huge section of tunnel, it is highly required to observe the role of each rock support and their effect of rock reinforcement in order to investigate more reasonable rock support structure. Especially for unstable tunnel situation with no shotcrete strength right after an excavation, sufficient investigation is needed for rock support structure. In this paper, we clarify the relations of compressive strength and material age, cohesion strength and material age, and cohesion stiffness and material age of grout with time-dependence through tests and numerical analysis simulation with trial rock mass considering hardening of bolt grouting material. By means of this process, effect of rock reinforcement for rockbolt is investigated right after an excavation and modelling and physical constants of young aged rockbolts are obtained. Additionally, the effect of rock reinforcement with hydraulic tensile friction bolt is examined right after an excavation, which grout effect is no need to be waited.

  • In this study, an experiment on pullout capacity was conducted of rock bolts using grouting materials such as cement mortar and resin, which are widely used, and a newly proposed steel pipe friction type rock bolt using elastic restoring force, and the results were compared and analyzed. The experimental results showed that the pullout capacity on the rock bolts with cement mortar under a dry condition (no ground water) was relatively larger than the rock bolts with resin and the steel pipe. Nevertheless, the friction type steel pipe rock bolt to use elastic restoring force is expected to be useful in the field particularly where groundwater exists and it affects the loss and curing of grouting materials such as cement mortar or resin. In addition, it was found to have the advantage of being easy and quick to install.

  • Rock bolts have been installed into rockmass as a main support system. In order to evaluate the rock bolt integrity using non-destructive technique, the transmission method of the guided ultrasonic wave has been successfully performed. For the transmission method, however, the source for the generation o# guided ultrasonic waves should be installed at the end of the steel bar during construction of the rock bolt in the field. The purpose of this study is to suggest a reflection method that the source and the receiver are installed on the head of the steel bar. The reflection method is compared with the transmission method using non-embedded rock bolts and rock bolts embedded in concrete block. In this experiment, the piezo disc element is used as the source and the AE sensor is used as the receiver. The wavelet transform is applied to determine the energy velocity. The experimental studies show that the reflection method produces almost identical value of the transmission method, and the energy velocity increases with the defect ratio. This study suggests that the reflection method of the guided ultrasonic wave may be a suitable method fur the rock bolt integrity evaluation in the field.

  • Based on the collapse characteristics of a shallow rectangular cavity, a three-dimensional failure mechanism which can be used to study the collapsing region of the rock mass above a shallow cavity roof is constructed. Considering the effects of surcharge pressure and surface bolt on the collapsing block, the external rate of works produced by surcharge pressure and surface bolt are included in the energy dissipation calculation. Using variational approach, an analytic expression of surface equation for the collapsing block, which can be used to study the collapsing region of the rock mass above a shallow cavity roof, is derived in the framework of upper bound theorem. Based on the analytic expression of surface equation, the shape of the collapsing block for shallow cavity is drawn. Moreover, the changing law of the collapsing region for different parameters indicates that the collapsing region of rock mass decreases with the increase of the density of surface bolt. This conclusion can provide reference for practicing geotechnical engineers to achieve an optimal design of supporting structure for a shallow cavity.

  • Recently, large-scale underground cavern such as underground hydraulic-power plant tend to be constructed very largely, so long-length rock bolt are generally used to support the huge plastic zone. However, problems fur bend-ing shape of the long-length steel bar and the bonding effects of anchoring systems are caused during the construction of the long-length rock bolt. In this study, field pull-out test for long-length rock bolt are carried out to estimate the most efficient anchoring system among the saw-toothed shape, grooved shape and smoothed shape with each 6 shells for 5.0m, 7.5m, 10.0m, 15.0m length. The axial load and axial displacement are measured with each load stage and than test results are analyzed to evaluate the behavior characteristics for each anchoring systems of long-length rock bolt. Also, the improvements of anchoring systems are proposed and discussed in this paper.

  • As one of the main support systems, rock bolts play a crucial role in the reinforcement of tunnels. Numerical and experimental studies using a transmission method of ultrasonic guided waves are performed to evaluate the integrity of rock bolts encapsulated by grouting paste. Numerical simulations using "DISPERSE" are carried out for the selection of the optimal experimental setup, i.e. non-destructive testing (NDT) system of the rock bolt. Based on results of the numerical simulation, the calculated frequency range for NDT testing is between 20kHz and 70kHz with the first longitudinal L(1) mode. Laboratory transmission tests are performed by attaching the piezo electric sensor at the tip of the rock bolt before embedding. Both of analytical and experimental results show that the amplitude of signals as well as the wave velocity increases with increase in the defect ratio of grouting paste. The defect in grouting paste means that the space around the rock bolt is not fully filled with the grouting paste. Experimental results also show that the increase of the wave velocity is more sensitive to the defect ratio increase than that of the amplitude. This study demonstrates that the transmission technique of ultrasonic guided waves may be a valuable tool in the evaluation of the rock bolt integrity.
