  • There is no authentic solution in a face detection problem though it is an important part of pattern recognition and has many diverse application fields. The reason is that there are many unpredictable deformations due to facial expressions, view point, rotation, scale, gender, age, etc. To overcome these problems, we propose an algorithm based on feature-based method, which is well known to be robust to these deformations. We detect a face by calculating a similarity between the formation of real face feature and candidate feature formation which consists of eyebrow, eye, nose, and mouth. In this paper, we use a steerable filter instead of general derivative edge detector in order to get more accurate feature components. We applied deformable template to verify the detected face, which overcome the weak point of feature-based method. Considering the low detection rate because of face detection method using whole input images, we design an adaptive skin-color filter which can be applicable to a diverse skin color, minimizing target area and processing time.

  • Among various region detector and shape feature extraction method, MSER(Maximally Stable Extremal Region) and SIFT and its variant methods are popularly used in computer vision application. However, since SIFT is sensitive to the illumination change and MSER is sensitive to the scale change, it is not easy to apply the image similarity retrieval. In this paper, we present a Scale and Rotation Invariant Region Feature(SRIRF) descriptor using scale pyramid, MSER and affine normalization. The proposed SRIRF method is robust to scale, rotation, illumination change of image since it uses the affine normalization and the scale pyramid. We have tested the SRIRF method on various images. Experimental results demonstrate that the retrieval performance of the SRIRF method is about 20%, 38%, 11%, 24% better than those of traditional SIFT, PCA-SIFT, CE-SIFT and SURF, respectively.

  • Utilizing weather independent SAR images along with machine learning based object detector is effective in robust vessel monitoring. While conventional SAR images often applied amplitude data from Single Look Complex, exploitation of polarimetric parameters acquired from multiple polarimetric SAR images was yet to be implemented to vessel detection utilizing machine learning. Hence, this study used four polarimetric parameters (H, p1, DoP, DPRVI) retrieved from eigen-decomposition and two backscattering coefficients (γ0, VV, γ0, VH) from radiometric calibration; six bands in total were respectively exploited from 52 Sentinel-1 SAR images, accompanied by vessel training data extracted from AIS information which corresponds to acquisition time span of the SAR image. Evaluating different cases of combination, the use of polarimetric indexes along with amplitude values derived enhanced vessel detection performances than that of utilizing amplitude values exclusively.

  • Ion cyclotron range of frequency (ICRF) heating system is an important auxiliary heating method in the experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST). In EAST, several megawatts of power are transmitted with coaxial transmission lines and coupled to the plasma. For the long pulse and high power operation of the ICRF waves heating system, it is very important to effectively control the power and initial phase of the ICRF signals. In this paper, a power and phase feedback control system is described based on field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices, which can realize complicated algorithms with the advantages of fast running and high reliability. The transmitted power and antenna phase are measured by a power and phase detector and digitized. The power and phase feedback control algorithms is designed to achieve the target power and antenna phase. The power feedback control system was tested on a dummy load and during plasma experiments. Test results confirm that the feedback control system can precisely control ICRF power and antenna phase and is robust during plasma variations.

  • Point clouds acquired by a LIDAR(Light Detection And Ranging, also LADAR) system often contain erroneous points called outliers seeming not to be on physical surfaces, which should be carefully detected and eliminated before further processing for applications. Particularly in case of LIDAR systems employing with a Gieger-mode array detector (GmFPA) of high sensitivity, the outlier ratio is significantly high, which makes existing algorithms often fail to detect the outliers from such a data set. In this paper, we propose a method to discriminate outliers from a point cloud with high outlier ratio acquired by a GmFPA LIDAR system. The underlying assumption of this method is that a meaningful targe surface occupy at least two adjacent pixels and the ranges from these pixels are similar. We applied the proposed method to simulated LIDAR data of different point density and outlier ratio and analyzed the performance according to different thresholds and data properties. Consequently, we found that the outlier detection probabilities are about 99% in most cases. We also confirmed that the proposed method is robust to data properties and less sensitive to the thresholds. The method will be effectively utilized for on-line realtime processing and post-processing of GmFPA LIDAR data.

  • Recently, many 3D contents have been produced through the multiview camera system. In this system, since a difference of the viewpoint between color and depth cameras is inevitable, the camera parameter plays the important role to adjust the viewpoint as a preprocessing step. The conventional camera calibration method is inconvenient to users since we need to choose pattern features manually after capturing a planar chessboard with various poses. Therefore, we propose a semi-auto camera calibration method using a circular sampling and an homography estimation. Firstly, The proposed method extracts the candidates of the pattern features from the images by FAST corner detector. Next, we reduce the amount of the candidates by the circular sampling and obtain the complete point cloud by the homography estimation. Lastly, we compute the accurate position having the sub-pixel accuracy of the pattern features by the approximation of the hyper parabola surface. We investigated which factor affects the result of the pattern feature detection at each step. Compared to the conventional method, we found the proposed method released the inconvenience of the manual operation but maintained the accuracy of the camera parameters.

  • In this paper, we propose the structure of a high-performance face-detection engine that responds well to facial rotating changes using rotation transformation which minimize the required memory usage compared to the previous face-detection engine. The validity of the proposed structure has been verified through the implementation of FPGA. For high performance face detection, the MCT (Modified Census Transform) method, which is robust against lighting change, was used. The Adaboost learning algorithm was used for creating optimized learning data. And the rotation transformation method was added to maintain effectiveness against face rotating changes. The proposed hardware structure was composed of Color Space Converter, Noise Filter, Memory Controller Interface, Image Rotator, Image Scaler, MCT(Modified Census Transform), Candidate Detector / Confidence Mapper, Position Resizer, Data Grouper, Overlay Processor / Color Overlay Processor. The face detection engine was tested using a Virtex5 LX330 FPGA board, a QVGA grade CMOS camera, and an LCD Display. It was verified that the engine demonstrated excellent performance in diverse real life environments and in a face detection standard database. As a result, a high performance real time face detection engine that can conduct real time processing at speeds of at least 60 frames per second, which is effective against lighting changes and face rotating changes and can detect 32 faces in diverse sizes simultaneously, was developed.

  • The digital phase-locked loop(DPLL) is one of the circuits composed of a digital detector, digital loop filter, voltage-controlled oscillator, and divider as a fundamental circuit, widely used in many fields such as electrical and circuit fields. A state estimator using various mathematical algorithms is used to improve the performance of a digital phase-locked loop. Traditional state estimators have utilized Kalman filters of infinite impulse response state estimators, and digital phase-locked loops based on infinite impulse response state estimators can cause rapid performance degradation in unexpected situations such as inaccuracies in initial values, model errors, and various disturbances. In this paper, we propose a two-layer Frobenius norm-based finite impulse state estimator to design a new digital phase-locked loop. The proposed state estimator uses the estimated state of the first layer to estimate the state of the first layer with the accumulated measurement value. To verify the robust performance of the new finite impulse response state estimator-based digital phase locked-loop, simulations were performed by comparing it with the infinite impulse response state estimator in situations where noise covariance information was inaccurate.
