  • This paper has shown that the impulse and the unit step responses of 2nd-order systems can be computed by an analytic method. Three different 2nd-order systems are investigated: the prototype system, the system with one LHP(left half plane) real zero and the system with one RHP(right half plane) real zero. It has also shown that the effects of the LHP or the RHP zero are very serious when the zero is getting closer to the origin on the complex plane. Based on these analytic results, this paper has presented two sufficient and necessary conditions for 2nd-order linear SISO(single-input/single-output) stable systems to have the nonovershooting and the monotone nondecreasing step response, respectively. The latter condition can be extended to the sufficient conditions for the monotone nondecreasing step response of high-order systems.

  • Since the heat exchange system, such as the boiler of power plant, gas turbine, and radiator require an application of intelligent control system for a high rate heat efficiency and the efficiency of these systems is depended on the control methods it is important for operator to understand control system of these systems and intelligent control technologies. In order to properly apply control equipment and intelligent technology to these process control systems, it is necessary to understand fuzzy, neural network, genetics, and immune as well as the basic aspects and operation principle of the process that relate control, interrelationships of the process characteristics, and the dynamics that are involved. Generally, since PID controllers are used in these systems it is difficult far engineer to understand both the complex dynamics and the intelligent control method. In this paper, we design an effective experimental system for the intelligent control education and analyze its characteristics through experimental system and each intelligent method to study how they can learn intelligent control system by experiments.

  • E-learning is a new teaching model nowadays, and Virtual Reality (VR) technology is reported that the use of virtual reality as an education tool can increase student interests, understanding, and creative learning because of encouraging students to learn by exploring and interacting with the information on the virtual environment. Besides that, LEGOs have long been the favorite of many children. LEGOs provide a mechanism to understand and do for many concepts from spatial relationships to robotics platforms. In this paper, we present a virtual reality application based on the assembly of LEGO-Like bricks to increase math and science learning by improving spatial thinking. It not only encourages students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics but also enhances learner's ability to analyze and solve problems. The application is built by Processing 2.0 as the easier programming language which is a top-down approach to build the 3D interactive program.

  • This paper presents a systematic method of estimating a velocity disturbance occurring in the fine seek control system of an optical disk drive. A fine seek loop gain adjustment algorithm is introduced to accurately estimate the velocity disturbance in spite of the uncertainties of the fine actuator. The velocity disturbance can be estimated from a measurable velocity, a fine seek controller output, and a compensated fine actuator model. A robust fine seek controller can be designed by considering a minimum fine seek open-loop gain, calculated by the estimated velocity disturbance. The proposed controller design method is applied to the fine seek control system of a DVD rewritable drive and is evaluated through the experimental results.

  • EtherCAT is an Ethernet-based fieldbus system standardized in IEC 61158 and SEMI, and widely used in the fields of factory automation, semiconductor equipment and robotics. In this paper, a real-time EtherCAT master is implemented on Linux operating systems and its performances are evaluated. To enhance the real-time capability of mainline Linux kernel, Xenomai is applied as a real-time framework and an open source EtherCAT master stack, Simple Open EtherCAT Master (SOEM), is installed on it. Unlike other studies, the real-time performance of the EtherCAT master is evaluated at the output of the network interface card, so that the evaluation results include all possible effects from the EtherCAT master system. The implemented EtherCAT master can send and receive packets up to 20KHz control frequency with low jitter, even in stressed condition.

  • MSRDS(Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio) provides the ability to simulate these technologies. SPL(Simple Programming Language) of MSRDS provides many functions for sensor programming to control autonomous robots. Sensor programming in SPL can be implemented in two types of schemes: procedure sensor notification and while-loop schemes. We considered the three programming schemes to control the robot movement after studying the advantages and disadvantages of the sensor notification procedure and the while-loop scheme. We also created simulation environments to evaluate the performance of the three considered schemes when applied to four different mazes. The simulation environment consisted of a maze and a robot with the most powerful sensor, i.e., the LRF(Laser Range Finder) sensor. We measured the required travel time and robot actions (number of turns and number of collisions) needed to escape the maze and compared the performance outcomes of the three considered schemes in the four different mazes.

  • EtherCAT is an Ethernet-based fieldbus system standardized in IEC 61158 and SEMI, and widely used in the fields of factory automation, semiconductor equipment and robotics. In this paper, an EtherCAT master is implemented on an embedded board with Arm based 64-bit quad-core processor and its jitter performance is evaluated at the output of the network interface to include all the effects of the entire system in the results. For the EtherCAT master system, an open source EtherCAT master stack, Simple Open EtherCAT Master (SOEM), is installed on PREEMPT_RT patched Linux operating system for real-time operation. The results show that the jitter performance is comparable to that of Xenomai-based master and the EtherCAT master with two master instances has similar jitter performance to the EtherCAT master with one master instance.
