  • This paper proposes a robust fault-tolerant control framework for robot manipulators to maintain the required performance and achieve task completion in the presence of both partial joint failures and complete joint failures and uncertainties. In the case of a complete joint failure or free-swinging joint failure causing the complete loss of torque on a joint, a fully-actuated robot manipulator can be viewed as an underactuated robot manipulator. To detect and identify a complete actuator failure, an on-line fault detection operation is also presented. The proposed fault-tolerant control system contains a robust adaptive controller overcoming partial joint failures based on robust adaptive control methodology, an on-line fault detector detecting and identifying complete joint failures, and a robust adaptive controller overcoming partial and complete joint failures, and so eventually it can face and overcome joint failures and uncertainties. Numerical simulations are conducted to validate the proposed robust fault-tolerant control scheme.

  • This paper proposes a SVM(Support Vector Machine) training algorithm to control a service robot with voice command. The service robot with a stereo vision system and dual manipulators of four degrees of freedom implements a User-Dependent Voice Control System. The training of SVM algorithm that is one of the statistical learning theories leads to a QP(quadratic programming) problem. In this paper, we present an efficient SVM speech recognition scheme especially based on less learning data comparing with conventional approaches. SVM discriminator decides rejection or acceptance of user's extracted voice features by the MFCC(Mel Frequency Cepstrum Coefficient). Among several SVM kernels, the exponential RBF function gives the best classification and the accurate user recognition. The numerical simulation and the experiment verified the usefulness of the proposed algorithm.

  • Determining the motion using optimal technique about traveling time and trajectory planning has been studied often in recent years, but the study of determining the optimal robot dimensions is rare, the authors attempt to find out the least driving torques and energy as the optimization of link length ratio referred to 2R SCARA and 3R robot manipulators. For the given linear path with triangular velocity profile, the inverse kinematic and dynamic problems are examined in order to lead into solution of problem, which is suggested for optimal design of link lengths. Accordingly, optimal link length ratio is obtained with respect to each case.

  • This paper presents the method of calibrating and compensating for the kinematic errors in robot manipulators. A calibration model is developed to represent any geometric errors in the manipulator's structure. A calibration jig is used to find the values of these kinematic errors in the end-effector's position and a calibration algormined for a SSR-6 robot manipulator developed by Samsung Heavy Industry, Daeduk R & D Center. Through this experiment the maximun kinematic error is reduced from 10mm to 0.4mm

  • A robust position control with the bound function of neural network structure is proposed for uncertain robot manipulators. The uncertain factors come from imperfect knowledge of system parameters, payload change, friction, external disturbance, and etc. Therefore, uncertainties are often nonlinear and time-varying. The neural network structure presents the bound function and does not need the concave property of the bound function. The robust approach is to solve this problem as uncertainties are included in a model and the controller can achieve the desired properties in spite of the imperfect modeling. Simulation is performed to validate this law for four-axis SCARA type robot manipulator.

  • A binary parallel robot manipulator uses actuators that have only two stable states being built by stacking variable geometry trusses on top of each other in a long serial chain. Discrete characteristics of the binary manipulator make it impossible to analyze an inverse kinematic problem in conventional ways. We therefore introduce new definitions of workspace and inverse kinematic solution, and the apply a genetic algorithm to the newly defied inverse kinematic problem. Numerical examples show that our genetic algorithm is very efficient to solve the inverse kinematic problem of binary robot manipulators.

  • This paper studied the collision detection of robot manipulators for safe collaboration in human-robot interaction. Based on sensor-based collision detection, external torque is detached from subtracting robot dynamics. To detect collision using joint torque sensor data, a comparative study was conducted using data-based machine learning algorithm. Data was collected from the actual 3 degree-of-freedom (DOF) robot manipulator, and the data was labeled by threshold and handwork. Using support vector machine (SVM), decision tree and k-nearest neighbors KNN method, we derive the optimal parameters of each algorithm and compare the collision classification performance. The simulation results are analyzed for each method, and we confirmed that by an optimal collision status detection model with high prediction accuracy.

  • DSME has developed Sub-assembly Welding Robot System(SWRS) in order to increase the productivity of arc welding and to improve hazard and unclean environments in shipbuilding. DSME's SWRS includes a number of equipments such as four overhanging 6-axis articulated robot manipulators(10kg pay-load), gantry system, vision system detecting the workpiece automatically, and OLP system using the CAD data and a central control system integrating an anti-collision module. The SWRS was installed in CAS(Component Assembly Shop) of DSME's OKPO shipyard in August 2006, and now SWRS is running well in site.

  • This paper describes a control scheme for a robot manipulator system which uses visual information to position and orientate the end-effector. In this scheme, the position and orientation of the target workpiece with respect to the base frame of the robot are assumed to be unknown, but the desired relative position and orientation of the end-effector to the target workpiece are given in advance. The control scheme directly integrates visual data into the servoing process without subdividing the process into determination of the position and orientation of the workpiece and inverse kinematics calculation. A neural network system is used for determining the change in joint angles required in order to achieve the desired position and orientation. The proposed system can be control the robot so that it approach the desired position and orientation from arbitrary initial ones. Simulation for the robot manipulator with six degrees of freedom will be done. The validity and the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme will be verified by computer simulations.
