Building a reliable mobile robot - one that can navigate without failures for long periods of time - requires that the uncertainty which results from control and sensing is bounded. This paper proposes a new mobile robot localization method using artificial landmarks. For a mobile robot localization, the proposed method uses a camera calibration(only extrinsic parameters). We use the FANUC arc mate to estimate the posture error, and the result shows that the position error is less than 1 cm and the orientation error less than 1 degrees.
In this paper we describe the shape measuring technique and system with a non-contractive sensor, composed of slit-ray projector and solid-state camera. For improving the accuracy and preventing measuring dead point, this sensor part is attached to the end of robot, and each sensing is executed after one step moving. By patching these sensing data, whole measuring data is constructed. The calibration between sensor and world coordinate is implemented through the specific calibration block by transformation matrix method. The result of experiment was satisfactory.

This paper proposes a way of expanding the use area of localization technique by using a beacon. In other words, we have developed the auto-calibration algorithm that recognizes the location of this beacon by attaching the beacon on an arbitrary position and by using the information of existing beacon under this situation. By doing so, the moving robot can overcome the limitation that the localization of moving robot is only possible within the area that has installed the existing beacon since the beacon cannot be installed on the accurate location when passing through a danger zone or an unknown zone. Accordingly, the moving robot can slowly move to the unknown zone according to this auto-calibration algorithm and can recognize its own location at a later time in a safe zone. The localization technique is essentially needed in using a moving robot and it is necessary to guarantee certain degree of reliability. Generally, moving robots are designed in a way to work well under the situation that the surroundings is well arranged and the localization techniques of using camera, laser and beacon are well developed. However due to the characteristics of sensor, there may be the cases that the place is dark, interfering radio waves, and/or difficult to install a beacon. The effectiveness of the method proposed in this paper has been proved through an experiment in this paper.

An efficient calibration algorithm for mobile robot localization using infrared range finder is proposed. A calibration is important to guarantee the performance of other algorithms which use sensor data because it is pre-process. We experimentally found that the infrared range finder PBS-03JN has error characteristics depending on both distance and scan angle. After obtaining 2-D grid error characteristic data on distance and scan angle, we proposed a simple and efficient calibration algorithm with a 2-D piecewise linear function set. The performance of our proposed calibration algorithm is verified by experiments and simulation.

We derive a systematic and iterative calibration algorithm, and position and pose estimation algorithm for the mobile robots in formation system based on the vision system. In addition, we develop a coordinate matching algorithm which calculates matched sequence of order in both extracted image coordinates and object coordinates for non interactive calibration and pose estimation. Based on the results of calibration, we also develop a camera simulator to confirm the results of calibration and compare the results of simulations with those of experiments in position and pose estimation.

Most industrial robots cannot be off-line programmed to carry out a task accurately, unless their kinematic model is suitably corrected through a calibration procedure. However, normal calibration is an expensive and time-consumming precedure due to the highly accurate measurement equipment required and due to the significant amount of data that must be collected. This paper presents a simple and economic procedure to improve the efficiency of robot calibration especially for arc welding application. To simplify the measurement process, an automotic data measurement algorithm as well as a simple measurement device are developed. Also, a calibration algorithm which can automatically identify the independent model parameters to be estimated is presented. To demonstrated the simplicity and the effectiveness of the procedure, experimental studies and computer simulations are performed and their results are discussed.

In this paper, we introduce an autonomous calibration method for a 2D laser displacement sensor (e.g. laser vision sensor and laser range finder) by matching a single point on a flat structure. Many arc welding robots install a 2D laser displacement sensor to expand their application by recognizing their environment (e.g. base metal and seam). In such systems, sensing data should be transformed to the robot's coordinates, and the geometric relation (i.e. rotation and translation) between the robot's coordinates and sensor coordinates should be known for the transformation. Calibration means the inference process of geometric relation between the sensor and robot. Generally, the matching of more than 3 points is required to infer the geometric relation. However, we introduce a novel method to calibrate using only 1 point matching and use a specific flat structure (i.e. circular hole) which enables us to find the geometric relation with a single point matching. We make the rotation component of the calibration results as a constant to use only a single point by moving a robot to a specific pose. The flat structure can be installed easily in a manufacturing site, because the structure does not have a volume (i.e. almost 2D structure). The calibration process is fully autonomous and does not need any manual operation. A robot which installed the sensor moves to the specific pose by sensing features of the circular hole such as length of chord and center position of the chord. We show the precision of the proposed method by performing repetitive experiments in various situations. Furthermore, we applied the result of the proposed method to sensor based seam tracking with a robot, and report the difference of the robot's TCP (Tool Center Point) trajectory. This experiment shows that the proposed method ensures precision.

This paper presents a new approach to the calibration of a SCARA robot orientation with a camera modeling that accounts for major sources of camera distortion, namely, radial, decentering, and thin prism distortion. radial distortion causes an inward or outward displacement of a given Image point from its ideal location. Actual optical systems are subject to various degrees of decentering, that is, the optical centers of lens elements are not strictly collinear. Thin prism distortion arises from imperfection in lens design and manufacturing as well as camera assembly It is our purpose to develop the vision system for the pattern recognition and the automatic test of parts and to apply the line of manufacturing.

In this study, we have developed an algorithm by attaching a camera at the end-effector of industrial six-axis robot in order to determine position and orientation of the camera system from cartesian coordinates. Cartesian coordinate as a starting point to evaluate for suggested algorithm, it was easy to confront increase of orientation vector for a linear line point that connects two points from coordinate space applied by recursive least square method which includes previous data result and new data result according to increase of image point. Therefore, when the camera attached to the end-effector has been applied to production location, with a calibration mask that has more than eight points arranged, this simulation approved that it is possible to determine position and orientation of cartesian coordinates of camera system even without a special measuring equipment.
