Among the various sensors for measuring traffic, PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) piezoelectric sensors are used to classify vehicles because they can detect the axle of the vehicle. Piezoelectric sensors are embedded in road pavements and are always exposed to traffic loads and environmental loads. Therefore, the life expectancy is very short, less than 6 years. Traffic control is essential for reinstallation and data collection is interrupted during the failure period. The lifespan will increase if the sensor installation depth is increased. In this study, the sensor signal output was analyzed with a variable depth of sensor installation to verify the possibility of deeper installation. Furthermore, various parameters, such as the weight and speed, were analyzed. The wheel load is applied using APT. As a result, the MSI BL sensor output signal is higher than 100mV when installed at 3cm, which is reliable. If the location of the sensor is deeper in the pavement, the expected lifetime of the sensor is also increased. On the other hand, the MSI cable was found to be less than 100mV at the shallowest depth of 1cm, making it impossible for field applications.

This paper reports the results of field evaluation to determine the levels of heavy metals in major industrial complexes in Korea over a seven year period (2007~2013). The measurement of heavy metal was conducted using quartz fiber filter sampling and ICP-AES analysis. In order to validate the analytical performance of these methods, studies were also carried out to investigate data quality control(QC) parameters, such as the method detection limit (MDL), repeatability, and recovery efficiencies. The average concentrations of total suspended particulates (TSP) for the nine industrial complexes in Korea were $104{\sim}169{\mu}g/m^3$, which was higher than other industrial complexes and urban areas. The Sihwa and Banwol industrial complexes were shown to be the biggest contributing sources to high TSP emission ($159{\mu}g/m^3$ and $169{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively). The concentrations of heavy metals in TSP were higher in the order of Fe>Cu>Zn, Pb, Mn>Cr, Ni, As and Cd. It was observed that Fe was the highest in the Gwangyang and Pohang steel industrial complexes. The concentrations of Zn and Pb were high in Onsan, Sihwa and Banwol industrial complexes, and this was attributed to the emission from the nonferrous industry. Additionally, Cr and Ni concentrations were high in the Sihwa and Banwol industrial complexes due to plating industry. On the other hand, Ulsan and Onsan industrial complexes showed high Cr and Ni concentrations as a response to the emission of metal industry related to automobile. The correlation analysis revealed the high correlation between Cr and Ni in plating industry from Sihwa and Banwol industrial complexes. Adding to this, components related to coal combustion and road dust showed high correlation in Pohang and Gwangyang industrial complexes. Then Onsan and Ulsan industrial complexes showed high correlation among components related to the nonferrous metals.
In this paper, an adaptive license plate recognition system which detects and recognizes license plate at real-time by using projected plane convolution and Decision Tree Classifier is proposed. And it was tested in circumstances which presence of complex background. Generally, in expressway tollgate or gateway of parking lots, it is very difficult to detect and segment license plate because of size, entry angle and noisy problem of vehicles due to CCD camera and road environment. In the proposed algorithm, we suggested to extract license plate candidate region after going through image acquisition process with inputted real-time image, and then to compensate license size as well as gradient of vehicle with change of vehicle entry position. The proposed algorithm can exactly detect license plate using accumulated edge, projected convolution and chain code labeling method. And it also segments letter of license plate using adaptive binary method. And then, it recognizes license plate letter by applying hybrid pattern vector method. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can recognize the front and rear direction license plate at real-time in the presence of complex background environments. Accordingly license plate detection rate displayed $98.8\%$ and $96.5\%$ successive rate respectively. And also, from the segmented letters, it shows $97.3\%$ and $96\%$ successive recognition rate respectively.

Increasingly advanced Information Technology (IT) has changed the operator so as to create more diversified and advanced traffic information demand. To deal with the changing demand in private sector, a concept of on-demand traffic information has been rapidly introduced. However VMS, a product of the first generation of ITS, which was designed to provide the unspecified individuals during driving the car with the basic level of traffic information by the public failed to actively change itself in such a changing pattern. This study was intended to describe the VMS system (tentatively, FM-VMS) which was further developed to accommodate the needs favoring the sophisticated PDA with the public role of providing the unspecified individuals with the equal information. FM-VMS introduced in this study is the device designed to transmit the voice and message to the drivers through the radio information device mounted on a car. A core technology is, unlike FM-DARC and RDS, the Water Making technology which directly inserts the digital signal into FM frequency in use. It's been currently used for broadcasting and security purpose. A detection rate as a result of testing FM-VMS system using Water Making technology was 90% or more in voice and message within 20m from test VMS. When a public-developed VMS information could be transmitted using FM frequency to the relatively vulnerable users (vulnerable to traffic information) in voice on a real-time basis to provide the regional traffic information, and furthermore, VMS message could be received through radio liquid using FM frequency only, it would obviously bring about the innovation in ITS as well as pave the way for creating the new added value down the road.

This paper investigates the evolution of EM admittance of piezoelectric transducers mounted on a notched beam from wave propagation perspective. A finite element analysis is adopted to obtain numerical solutions for Lamb waves reverberating on the notched beam. The mode-converted Lamb wave signals due to a notch are extracted by using the polarization characteristics of piezoelectric transducers collocated on the beam. Then, a series of temporal spectrums are computed to demonstrate the evolution of EM admittance through fast Fourier transform of the mode-converted Lamb wave signals which are consecutively truncated in the time domain. When truncation time is relatively small, the corresponding temporal spectrum is governed by the characteristics of the input driving frequency. As truncation time becomes large, however, the modal characteristics of the notched beam play a crucial role in the temporal spectrum within the input driving frequency band. This implies that mode-converted Lamb waves reverberating on the beam contributes to the resonance of the beam. The root mean square values are computed for the temporal spectrums in the vicinity of each resonance frequency. The root mean square values increase monotonically with respect to truncation time for any resonance frequencies. Finally the implications of the numerical observation are discussed in the context of damage detection of a beam.

The existing transportation systems is emerged as a major obstacle to solve the problems such as a traffic jam and the increasing cost for a distribution and a traffic safety. In hun, ITS targeting intellectual vehicles and transportation infrastructure like road and signals is getting more important and the standards of ITS wireless communication is also getting attention. New traffic control strategies are being developed to utilize real-time traffic information collected by detection method using ITS wireless technology. Especially, DSRC system is being expanded wit ETCS and the use of OBU is spreading. These infrastructures will have much influence on ITS industry and a profound study on the method of utilizing a present infrastructure is going on in various fields. The optimum traffic signal control system using quality real-time information through these infrastructure is under development and so is WISDOM. Accordingly, this paper proposes communication protocol utilizing DSRC to collect real-time traffic information in WISDOM.
The fact that the demands on traffic data collection are imposed by economic and safety considerations raisese the question of the potential for complementing existing traffic data collection programs with satellite data. Evaluating and monitoring traffic characteristics is becoming increasingly important as worsening congestion, declining economic situations, and increasing environmental sensitivies are forcing the government and municipalities to make better use of existing roadway capacities. The present system of using automatic counters at selected points on highways works well from a temporal point of view (i.e., during a specific period of time at one location). However, the present system does not cover the spatial aspects of the entire road system (i.e., for every location during specific periods of time); the counters are employed only at points and only on selected highways. This lack of spatial coverage is due, in part, to the cost of the automatic counters systems (fixed procurement and maintenance costs) and of the personal required to deploy them. The current procedure is believed to work fairly well in the aggregate mode, at the macro level. However, at micro level, the numbers are more suspect. In addition, the statistics only work when assuming a certain homogenity among characteristics of highways in the same class, an assumption that is impossible to test whn little or no data is gathered on many of the highways for a given class. In this paper, a remote sensing system as complement of the existing system is considered and implemented. Since satellite imagery with high resolution is not available, digitized panchromatic imagery acquired from an aircraft platform is utilized for initial test of the feasibility and performance capability of remote sensing data. Different levels of imagery resolutions are evaluated in an attempt to determine what vehicle types could be classified and counted against a background of pavement types, which might be expected in panchromatic satellite imagery. The results of a systematic study with three different levels of resolutions (1m, 2m and 4m) show that the panchromat ic reflectances of vehicles and pavements would be distributed so similarly that it would be difficult to classify systematically and analytically remotely sensing vehicles on pavement within panchromatic range. Anaysis of the aerial photographs show that the shadows of the vehicles could be a cue for vehicle detection.

The purpose of this study was to verify the reliability of the solar radiation model and discuss its applicability to the urban area of Seoul for summer heat stress mitigation. We extended the study area closer to the city scale and enhanced the spatial resolution sufficiently to determine pedestrian-level urban radiance. The domain was a $4km^2$ residential area with high-rise building sites. Radiance modelling (SOLWEIG) was performed with LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging)-based detailed geomorphological land cover shape. The radiance model was evaluated using surface energy balance (SEB) observations. The model showed the highest accuracy on a clear day in summer. When the mean radiation temperature (MRT) was simulated, the highest value was for a low-rise building area and road surface with a low shadow effect. On the other hand, for high-rise buildings and vegetated areas, the effect of shadows was large and showed a relatively low value of mean radiation temperature. The method proposed in this study exhibits high reliability for the management of heat stress in urban areas at pedestrian height. It is applicable for many urban micro-climate management functions related to natural and artificial urban settings; for example, when a new urban infrastructure is planned.
This paper deals with ground clutter model for FOD (foreign object debris) surveillance FMCW (frequency modulated continuous waveform) radar. In the FOD surveillance radar, it has received not only the signals reflected by FOD, but also the clutters of the surface of the runway and the grassland simultaneously. However, to detect the FOD, the clutter rejection algorithm is necessary because the RCS (radar cross section) of FOD is nearly same to RCS of the grassland. In addition, it is difficult to apply the MTI (moving target indicator) algorithm as the clutter rejection algorithm because both the FOD and the clutter coexist stationarily. Hence, to remove the stationary clutter, it is crucial to accurately generate clutter map considering the surface of road. In this paper, in order to generate the clutter map, the respective beat signal at every range bin is generated in the case of only the surface without FOD, and then the beat signal accumulated 100 times. And also, Weibull distribution is applied to the RCS value to take the scattering distribution of clutter into consideration. The simulation results show that FOD can be well detected by applying the generated clutter map to the FOD FMCW radar.
This paper analyzed the SCMS and pilot policy, which is pursued by the U.S. government in connected vehicles. SCMS ensures authentication, integrity, privacy and interoperability. The SCMS Support Committee of U.S. government has established the National Unit SCMS and is responsible for system-wide control. Of course, it introduces security policy, procedures and training programs making. In this paper, the need for SCMS to be applied to C-ITS was discussed. The structure of the SCMS was analyzed and the U.S. government's filot policy for connected vehicles was discussed. The discussion of the need for SCMS highlighted the importance of the role and responsibilities of SCMS between vehicles and vehicles. The security certificate management system looked at the structure and analyzed the type of certificate used in the vehicle or road side unit (RSU). The functions and characteristics of the certificates were reviewed. In addition, the functions of basic safety messages were analyzed with consideration of the detection and warning functions of abnormal behavior in SCMS. Finally, the status of the pilot project for connected vehicles currently being pursued by the U.S. government was analyzed. In addition to the environment used for the test, the relevant messages were also discussed. We also looked at some of the issues that arise in the course of the pilot project.
