  • As the traffic congestion and parking problems in urban areas are increased the tall and narrow commuter vehicles have interested as a means to increase the utilization of existing freewa- ys and parking facilities. However, in hard cornering those vehicles could reduce stability against overturning compared to conventional vehicles. This tendency can be mitigated by tilting the body toward the inside of the turn. In this paper those tilting vehicles are considered in which at speed at least, the tilt angle is controlled by steering the front wheels. In other word, if the driver turns the steering wheel the tilt controller automatically steers the road wheel to tilt the body inside of the turn. Also, the dynamic tilting vehicle model with tire slip angles is constructed by adding the roll degree of freedom. Finally, through computer simulation the behaviors of the tilting vehicles are investigated.

INTEGRATED VEHICLE CHASSIS CONTROL WITH A MAIN/SERVO-LOOP STRUCTURE

  • In order to reduce the negative effects of dynamic coupling among vehicle subsystems and improve the handling performance of vehicle under severe driving conditions, a vehicle chassis control integration approach based on a main-loop and servo-loop structure is proposed. In the main-loop, in order to achieve satisfactory longitudinal, lateral and yaw response, a sliding mode controller is used to calculate the desired longitudinal, lateral forces and yaw moment of the vehicle; and in the servo-loop, a nonlinear optimizing method is adopted to compute the optimal control inputs, i.e. wheel control torques and active steering angles, and thus distributes the forces and moment to four tire/road contact patches. Simulation results indicate that significant improvement in vehicle handling and stability can be expected from the proposed chassis control integration.

  • This paper describes a vehicle driving-load estimation method for application to vehicle Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC). Vehicle driving-load consists of aerodynamic force, rolling resistance, and gravitational force due to road slope and is unknown disturbance in a vehicle dynamic model. The vehicle driving-load has been estimated from engine and wheel speed measurements using a vehicle dynamic model a least square method. The estimated driving-load has been used in the adaptation of throttle/brake control law. The performance of the control law has been investigated via both simulation and vehicle tests. The simulation and test results show that the proposed control law can provide satisfactory vehicle-to-vehicle distance control performance for various driving situations.

  • Anti-lock Braking System(ABS) is a device which prevents the wheels form locked up under emergency braking of a vehicle. So it helps the vehicle to maintain the steerability and shortens the braking distance by maintaining optimal frictional force during braking since the tire road slip is controlled in acceptable range. Recently, ABS is accepted as a standard equipment in vehicles, especially in commercial vehicles(bus and trucks). Commercial vehicles don´t use hydraulic lines but use pneumatic lines for braking system mostly.   • Automobile aeroacoustics Is a developing area of technology where experimental and theoretical tools are being continuously refined to understand, analyze and modify the noise-generating mechanisms in the vehicle flow. Main sources of ground vehicle exterior noise are the tires (tire/road interaction) and the unsteady flow field around the vehicle. In this study, the sound source localization of a rolling tire was applied to the measurement of radiated sound by using an acoustic mirror system. A possible flow pattern that develops is suggested based on detailed wind tunnel investigations with a rotating wheel in contact with a moving belt.

  • Hydropneumatic suspension unit is an important part of tracked vehicles to absorb external impact load exerted from the non-paved road and the cannon discharge. Its absorption performance is strongly influenced by both damping and spring forces of the unit. In this paper, we numerically analyze the damping characteristics of the in-arm-type hydropneumatic suspension unit (ISU) by considering four distinct dynamic modes of the ISU damper: jounce-loading, jounce-unloading, rebound-loading and rebound-unloading. The flow rate coefficients determining the oil flow rate through the damper orifice are decided with the help of independent experiments. The wheel reaction force, the flow rate at cracking and the damping energy are parametrically investigated with respect to the orifice diameter and the wheel motion frequency.

  • The bogie of monorail vehicles applies rubber wheel system not steel wheel system. In addition, The structure of the bogie is very complicated because vehicle operates on the elevated road and vehicle drives with wrapping the guide way. When the monorail vehicle applies air brake system, lower device of vehicle may be complex and some devices may be limited. On the other hand, hydraulic brake equipment is compact and not weighing. Braking force is also outstanding compared with air brake so the hydraulic brake equipment is suitable for monorail vehicle. Also urban transit system such as monorail, applies mixed system both friction brake and electric brake in order to save electric energy. But application case of hydraulic brake in the country is very rare because hydraulic brake have difficulty in satisfaction of control requirement and maintenance. Therefore, this study suggests ways to design hydraulic brake system with blending brake for monorail vehicle and applies the ways to future monorail.

  • This paper describes traveling systems consisting of one major-wheel and three minor-wheels attached to each tip of three spokes. A link of inter-axle plays an important role of the system. It connects secondary axle to the major wheel axle. Its length is determined to ascend stably various stairs. The systems was designed to mount a cart for carrying agricultural products. The systems was applied to ascend stairs, travel on sand and cross a obstacle, despite of simple design.

차량용 타이어의 마멸손상에 관한 고장사례 연구 (Failure Studies on the Wear Scars of an Automotive Tire)

  • This paper presents the case studies on the friction related wears of an automotive tire, which is strongly connected to the safety and comfort of a driver during a running of a car. Wear scars of a tire tread are affected by various causes such as an air pressure, a wheel alignment, a driving speed, road conditions, starting and braking habits of a driver. The data were collected from used tires for a replacement at the car service center. Most of the wear problems came from the improper repair and adjustment of revolving components, which cause an unbalanced wear of a tread part of a tire. Thus, the regular checking of a tire radically reduces the wear scars of a tire and may increase a driving safety and a fuel economy of a car and a wear life of a tire.

  • In this paper, a mathematical vehicle model, the braking force control parameters, the wheel control logic, and vehicle control strategy are presented, in order to analyze the dynamic characteristics of a vehicle equipped with ABS(Antilock Brake System). The full vehicle dynamics model is constructed with sprung mass, brake system, and wheels to verify control algorithms. The valve control algorithms are designed with the wheel accelerations and slip ratio take into consideration. Theses algorithms are applied to the front and rear wheels independently. Simulation is performed under the wet road condition at initial braking speed of 60 [km/h].
