This study has been conducted for the long-term riverbed change prediction on Geum River and Miho Stream surrounding the planned Multifunctional Administrative City and the neighboring regions by the construction of a small dam. Based on the analysis of vertical riverbed changes of the cross-sectional data for the years 1988, 2002 and 2007, minimum bed elevation significantly decreased in both Geum River and Miho Stream in 2007 as compared to 1988. Compared to 2002, however, a slight elevation change was observed. To make a long-term prediction on riverbed changes by the construction of a small dam, a one dimensional HEC-RAS 4.0 model has been used. By the fixed bed model test, the water levels were calibrated. By using the cross-sectional data of 1988 and 2002, verification was conducted under a movable bed model. According to the prediction of riverbed changes for each scenario with varying height of small dam, minor impact is expected around Miho Stream while major impact is expected around Geum River by 2017, as the small dam height increases. If the small dam is 7m-high, for example, it's been simulated that 1.59m deposition would be expected around the upper stream of Miho Stream Confluence while 1.98m scour would be expected around the downstream of the small dam.

In order to analyze the experimental results obtained from the model riverbed filtration performed by Ahn et al. a mathematical model was developed to simulate the flow through the lateral. The discharge rates at each section of the lateral measured by Ahn et al. were compared with the model predictions, and they matched favorably. The Manning's roughness coefficients of all the laterals employed in the study of Ahn et al. were determined using the model. Results show that the roughness coefficient becomes larger with the increase in the entrance velocity to the collector well, and that the coefficient ranges from 0.012 to 0.015 under the normal operational conditions of the riverbed filtration. Results also show that the coefficient becomes smaller as the lateral diameter increases.

This study was conducted to estimate the number of disc cutter consumption and to predict amount of disc cutters when a shield TBM(Tunnel Boring Machine) of the Han Riverbed Tunnel was applied. In fact, it is almost impossible to change the machine after starting the excavation using the shield TBM method. Therefore, it is important to design an appropriate equipment in the shield method - an efficiency choice of the operation equipment plays a key role in the shield tunnel processing. For the above reason, the disc cutter consumption prediction is quite important so that the detailed analysis is required. A number of disc cutter consumption was predicted by the three methods, viz. KOMATSU, MITSUBISHI and NTNU. In addition, the predicted results were compared with field data. The prediction of disc cutter consumption showed that 237 for KOMATSU, 501 for MITSUBISHI, and 634 for NTNU, respectively. However, a total number of 1,263 disc cutter consumption were investigated during the tunnel construction. It was found that there was a huge difference between the predicted and real values of the disc cutter consumption. The more detailed investigation showed that the disc cutter was worn out bluntly in the northbound tunnel, meanwhile it was worn out sharply in the southbound tunnel. In particular, the disc cutter consumption in the southbound tunnel was increased rapidly because of rear abrasion for remaining mucks in the chamber.
The assessment of erosional and depositional patterns near bridge piers is essential to understand the fluvial scour process. Geophysical surveys are particularly effective in determining the riverbed variations in a river and may also be of value for obtaining the previous scour history below the riverbed profile. In this study, GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar), as a non-destructive geophysical technique, was used to assess the existence and depth of existing and infilled scour thickness, streambed materials, and pre- and post- scour surfaces at the bridge piers in Han River, June 2002 and October 2002. The GPR acquisition system used for obtaining profiles of the shallow subsurface deposits was a portable GSSI SIR 2000 system with 100 and 400 MHz antennas. The GPR data obtained along the 24 bridge piers in the flow direction of the river and in the surroundings of 5 bridge piers were compared and presented in this study. It is concluded that GPR surveys can be effective in determining both the water depth and sub-bottom geological structure near the bridge piers and abutments provided that the appropriate instrumentation and operational procedures are applied.
This study investigated longitudinal changes in riverbed materials properties and temporal alteration of river channel geomorphology in the Geum River basin, where two multipurpose dams(Yongdam Dam and Daecheong Dam) were built in upstream area. We carried out grain size distribution analyses and measured soil organic matter contents of riverbed materials taken at the upper and lower sites of the two large dams. We also estimated the channel width, bar area and vegetation encroachment using the oldest map and aerial photographs taken before and after the construction of the dams. The results can contribute to increasing understandings of dam induced habitat alteration in river ecosystem.
This study was performed to investigate the riverbed structure and the pollution type in Nakdong River, Western Nakdong River. and Suyoung Stream. Sediment and water samples were collected at is in Nakdong River. in Western Nakdong River, and 8 states In Suyoung Stream from February 20, 1997 to June 15, 1997. The depth distributions of sampling sites in the three streams were measured and heavy metals(Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu) and pesticides in sediments and COD, BOD, and total nitrogen(T-N) in water samples were analysed. The deepest and the shallowest sites were strate 11(11.58m) and 9(3.35m) in Nakdong River, site 7(6.25m) and 4(2.06m) in Western Nakdong River, and site 8(2.89m) and 1(0. 61m) in Suyoung Stream , respectively. The mean concentration of Cd(45.79ppm) was higher In the sediment of Western Nakdong River than In other two streams and those of Pb(76.25ppm), Cr(48.13ppm), and Cu(77.50ppm) were higher in file sediment of Suyoung Stream than in other two streams. Pesticides(1 kind of organophosphorus and 3 kinds of organochlorine pesticide) were detected only in the sediment of Western Nakdong River. The mean concentrations of COD(20.26ppm), BOD(25.36ppm), and T-N(18.05ppm) were higher in the water sample of Suyoung Stream than In other two streams.

As a way to the optimum design of the collector well lateral in riverbed filtration, experiments were performed using sand tanks which were connected to form a model lateral system. Measured were the residual hydraulic heads along the laterals, the discharge rates at each sand tank and the production rates at the collector well while the model laterals were operated with various scenarios of changing parameters including water level of the collector well, the lateral diameter and length, and the hydraulic conductivity of the sand. Results showed that riverbed filtration could be more efficient when the resistance in the lateral was weak compared with the resistance in the sand, which was indicated by the more flattened distribution of the residual hydraulic heads along the lateral. Results also showed that the discharge rate increased exponentially with the approach to the collector well, and that the exponent increased as the lateral diameter decreased and/or the hydraulic conductivity of the sand increased. It was also seen that the well production increased with the increase in the lateral length and diameter although the marginal productivity decreased. It could be concluded that the axial flow velocity in the lateral was an important factor governing the efficiency of a lateral in riverbed filtration and that the maximum entrance velocity to the collector well, over which the efficiency decreased drastically, was about 1 m/sec under the conditions of this study.

The hydraulic characteristics and the patterns of riverbed change had been analysed by HEC-RAS simulation in a reach of Cheong-mi river with and without weir. The corresponding physical disturbance had been evaluated with the method suggested by K-water (2008). The occurrences of low physical disturbance score coincide with the corresponding high bed changes by weir installation. The effects of physical disturbance coincide with the patterns of riverbed change along river reach which shows riverbed change is the important factor to physical disturbance. In case of installation of additional weirs at up and down stream sections of no disturbance effect by the existing weir, no physical disturbances occur in certain sections with confirming the appearance of the similar disturbance scores between the simulation results of with and without additional weir installations. In case of installation of additional weirs at up and down stream sections of disturbance effect margins by the existing weir, physical disturbances occur at every section. In case of installation of additional weirs at up and down stream sections within disturbance effect by the existing weir, low physical disturbance scores are given at every section because of superposition of disturbance along river reach. The physical disturbance would be minimized such that the additional weir is installed with sufficient distances of no disturbance and bed change effects along river reach.
The hydraulic-geometrica1 relations between the riverbed slope and water discharge and other hydraulic variables in some selected alluvial rivels in Korea have been investigated. The rivers from which the data relevant to this study were collected are mainly the first tributaries, considered to be mostly in the equilibrium state, of the 10 major rivers in Korea. The investigating methods adopted in this study are similar to the one suggested by Leopold and Maddock and the one suggested by Garde. All of 18 rivers their drainage areas of which range between 100-2,000 $\textrm{km}^2$ were considered and the changes in riverbed slope, drainage area, bed material size along the downstream river distance were measured. It is found in this study that the change in the riverbed slope, S, along the downstream can be expressed in terms of the coefficient, $\beta$, expressing the change in the drainage area along the downstream and the drainage area, A, by an empirical relation as 0.0063 0.0063 S = $S_{ 0}$$A_{0}$$^{-------- +0.51}$A-$^{-------- -0.51}$. $\beta$$\beta$ According to this relation, the riverbed slope of the river reaches investigated in this study appear to be proportional to the -0.6th power of the drainage area. This result is consistent with the previous ones obtained by Hack.k.

This study has developed a technology for river basin including the management of the data related with riverbed and the analysis of the riverbed maintenance based on the high-resolution imagery data and LiDAR (Light Detection and Raging) in order to enhance the utilization of river management by using RIMGIS(River Information Management GIS) and to acquire the advanced operation for river management. Using the detailed river topographical map specially designed in the form of LiDAR or high-resolution images, riverbed data and river bank channel information that are dynamically changed were informationized and established in the RIMGIS DB. At this stage, a monitoring techniques that is established in the river management system associated with RIMGIS and minimized the impact of riverbed maintenance (fluctuations) has been studied. In addition, functions and data structure of RIMGIS containing the information of geography and management of the river have been supplemented to make an improvement of the real-time management of the river. Furthermore, a technology that is capable of supplementing RIMGIS has been developed, making it feasible to maintain the river in use of structural method including an structural scheme of cross-section of the river by providing the information of riverbed and cross-section of the river. This is considered to solve an issue of insufficient data on accuracy and based on a lack of information of the river based on the two-dimensional lines, making it feasible to (steadily) improve the function of RIMGIS and to operate management tasks. Therefore, it is highly expected to enhance aforementioned technology of the river information management as a great foundation that maximizes the utilization of the river management to support RIMGIS for the development of national river management data.
