This study aims at the development of the model for a forecasting of water quality in river basins using artificial neural network technique. Water quality by Artificial Neural Network Model forecasted and compared with observed values at the Sangju q and Dalsung stations in Nakdong river basin. For it, a multi-layer neural network was constructed to forecast river water quality. The neural network learns continuous-valued input and output data. Input data was selected as BOD, CO discharge and precipitation. As a result, it showed that method III of three methods was suitable more han other methods by statistical test(ME, MSE, Bias and VER). Therefore, it showed that Artificial Neural Network Model was suitable for forecasting river water quality.
The objective of the study is to assess the water quality improvement resulted from the rearrangement of the irrigation water supply systems at Mankyeong River and Ansung Chun basin. There is a mixed type of watershed composed of urban and rural areas in the region. The water intake facilities for agricultural use such as reservoir, weir and pumping station are generally located at upstream river where the water quality maintains relatively clean. However, this study focuses on moving the water intake to downstream and rearranging the irrigation water supply system, then investigating how effective they are for water quality improvement in the river. When the water intake is moved downstream, the stream flow is increased as much as the amount of irrigation water that is to be taken upstream. The augmented flow which is frequently referred to as environmental flow can function as dilution water for improving the quality of polluted water that is originated from the wastewater in tributaries.
The aim of this study is to identify the significant pollutant sources from the tributaries that are affecting the water quality of the study site, the Geum River and provide a solution to enhance the water quality. Multivariate statistical analysis modles such as cluster analysis, Principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were applied to identify and prioritize the major pollutant sources of the two major tributaries, Gab-cheon and Miho-cheon, of the Geum River. PCA identifies three major pollutant sources for Gab-cheon and Miho-cheon, respectively. For Gab-cheon, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), urban, and agricultural pollutions are identified as major pollutant sources. For Miho-cheon, agricultural, urban, and forest land are identified as major pollutant sources. On the contrary, PMF identifies three pollutant sources in Gab-cheon, same as PCA result and two pollutant sources in Miho-cheon. Water quality control scenarios are formulated and improvement of water quality in the river locations are simulated and analyzed with the Environmental Fluid Dynamic Code (EFDC) model. Scenario results were evaluated using a water quality index developed by Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. PCA and PMF appears to be effective to identify water pollution sources for the Geum river and also its tributaries in detail and thus can be used for the development of water quality improvement alternative of the above water bodies.
The theory and practice of water quality scoring and indexing are introduced. The monthly water analysis data are available for six stations long the down-stream Han River whthin the areal boundary of the Special City of Seoul. The data cover the period between 1975 and 1979 inclusive and contain the analytical findings on 37 water constituents including DO, BOD, temperature, total solids and etc. Sic parameters are selected form the 37 items, that, to the judgement of the writer, best reflect the water quality of the Han River. They are; dissolved oxggen saturation, pH, fecal coliform, total solids, BOD and nitrate+ammonia. For each of the six parameters, a subscore function is developed and graphically presented to facilitate the transform of a measurment of the arameter to a subscore on a common score(e.G. 0-100) The score of a sample is calculated as a fuction of the six subscores, using four different approaches; (1) the unweighted arithmetic water quality score, (2) the weighted arithmetic water quality score, (3)the unweighted multiplicative score and (4) the reduced (total) score. Independent of these calculated scores, the experts' score which is calculated by averaging the ratings of water quality experts is obtained and compared with each of the four calculated scores by means of the least square method. The experts' score compares most favorably with the "reduced" score with the correlation coefficient of 0.956 : therefore this method of water quality scoring is adopted to calculate the Han River water quality scores and indices. Water quality index data for Guiri, ukdo, Pokwangdong, Noryangjin, Yongdungpo and Kayang Stations, 1975-1979 are as follow: The overall water quality index data of the Han River between Guiri and Kayang Stations are found; 47.3 in 1976, 48.0 in 1977, 48.5 in 1978 and 54.7 in 1979, indicating the general trend towards water quality improvent in this part of the river, in terms of the increased water quality index by average 1.85 points per year during this period. Finally the optimum sampling frequencies distributed among the six stations, using an equation which takes into account the coefficients of variation of the water quality scores and indices arec calculated.alculated.
This study was conducted to evaluate water quality in the Keum River estuary using principal component analysis. The results was summarized as follow; Water quality in the Keum River estuary could be explained up to 70.40% by three factors which were included in the inffluent loading by the Keum River and Kyungpo cheon(38.99%), seasonal variation and organic matter pollution(19.05%), sediment resuspension and internal metabolism(12.35%). For spatial variation of factor score, artificial pollutant loading is highest at st.1, below Keum River barrage, and decreases toward the outer sea. For annual variation of factor score, factor 1 was highly related to artificial pollutant leading, and it was gently increased in 1994. Also, organic matter pollution, sediment resuspension and internal metabolism were increased to every year. It is necessary to control the nutrient leading by Keum river and Kyongpo cheon for Water quality management of estuary.
As part of the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project, multifunctional weirs have been constructed in the rivers and operated for river-level management. As the weirs play a role in draining water from tributaries, the aim of this study was to determine the influence of the weirs on the water level of the Nam River, which is one of the Nakdong River's tributaries. Self-organizing maps (SOMs) and a locally weighted scatterplot smoothing (LOWESS) technique were applied to analyze the patterns and trends of water level and quality of the Nakdong River, considering the operation of the Changnyeong-Haman weir, which is located where the Nam River flows into the Nakdong River. The software program HEC-RAS was used to find the boundary points where the water is well drained. Per the study results at the monitoring points ranging between the junction of the two rivers and 17.5 km upstream toward the Nam River, the multifunctional weir influenced the water level at the Geoyrong and Daesan observation stations on the Nam River and the water quality based on automatic monitoring at the Chilseo station on the Nakdong River was affected strongly by the Nakdong River and partly by the Nam River.
The Yeongsan River, one of the four major rivers in Korea, shows the highest degree of water pollution compared to the other major rivers. The construction and opening of two weirs, Seungchon and Juksan, induced fluctuations in the hydrologic conditions and water quality of the river. To investigate the water quality changes caused by the opening of the weir in 2017, this study analyzed the water quality data using the non-parametric Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the three-dimensional spatiotemporal plots. The non-parametric statistical test results showed that the concentration of all parameters has increased after 2017 at a significance level of 0.05. For the parameters that showed the highest degree of change, chlorophyll-a and suspended solids, the median values have increased by more than 30% after weir opening. Visual analysis additionally showed the spatial changes in the Yeongsan River. Generally, the sites above the Seungchon weir showed higher pollution levels than those above the Juksan weir. In time series, visual analysis results also showed the trend of rising concentration for all water quality parameters, indicating that the opening of two weirs had a significant effect on the change in water quality of the Yeongsan River.
The current industrial development and the Increase of population along Nakdong River have produced a rapid Increase of wastewater discharge. This has resulted in problem of water quality control and management. Although many efforts have been carried out, water quality has not significantly improved. The goal of this study is to design a NGIS-based water quality management system for the scientific water quality control and management in the Nakdong River. For general water quality analysis, QULA2E model was applied to the Nakdong River. A sensitivity analysis was made to determine significant parameters and an optimization was made to estimate optimal values. The calibration and verification were performed by using observed water quality data for Nakdong River. A water qualify management system for Nakdong River was made by connecting the QUAL2E model to ArcView. It allows a Windows-based Graphic User Interface(GUI) to implement all operation with regard to water quality analysis. The modeling system in this study will be an efficient NGIS for planning of water quality management.
The objective of this study was to use remotely sensed data, combined with in situ data, for the assessment of trophic state for Daecheong reservoir. Three Landsat TM(Thematic Mapper) imagery data were processed to portray trophic state conditions. The remotely sensed data and the measured data were obtained on 20 June 1995. Regression models have been developed between the chlorophyll-a concentration and reflectance which was converted to Landsat TM digital data. The regression model was determined based on the correlation coefficient which was higher than 0.7 and was applied to the entire study area to generate a distribution map of chlorophyll-a and trophic state. The equation, providing estimates of chlorophyll-a concentration, represented the year-to-year spatial variation of trophic zones in the reservoir. Satellite remote sensing data derived from Landsat TM had been successfully used for trophic slate mapping in Daecheong reservoir.
The deteriorating role of Nakdong River due to the Four Major Rivers Project has caused a series of problems, including water pollution, drying streams, aggravation of the hydroecology. Geumho River and Gyeongseong-cheon had a higher concentration index and is believed to impact the water quality of the main stream. The influence index of Geumho River and Nam River between 2015 and 2016, which have a large amount of discharge, was the highest among the tributaries in terms of the load material balance. Showing the highest average concentration and average load in the index assessment, Geumho River is believed to require an intensive management for improving the water quality of the main stream. Furthermore, when the cumulative percentage of the average concentration and average load was compared based on the water quality improvement of the tributaries mixed to Nakdong River, which was set to 60%, Geumho River, Nam River, Topyeong-cheon, and Cha-cheon, which showed the highest ratio in that order, were determined to require a water quality management program as a priority.
