  • For efficient water management in the Ara River during the flood season, applicability of flood simulation model in the ungaged Gulpo watershed has been tested. In the Gulpo River watershed, fundamental hydrologic data such as water level and flowrates are very limited and selection of the reliable hydrologic parameters are very important for model application. This study tested reliability of parameters estimated using the empirical equation based on the HEC-HMS runoff simulation. Also coupled with HEC-RAS hydraulic routing model, simulated flowrates from HEC-HMS has been compared with the observed water levels collected at the upstream and downstream of the Gyulhyun Weir station during the flood event in 2010. Based on this information, stage-discharge curve has been developed and its reliability has been tested for flood event in 2011.

  • Recently, as the development of water front and natural type river is gradually increasing, it is mostly the case in that the flow analysis is implemented by only the flood level of the starting point without the tidal effect when the flood water level of the starting point is highly estimated than the high tidal water level in the design of river adjacent to an estuary. This research has analyzed the variation of tidal current for Oncheon river in Busan using Delft-3D program, considering that the tidal effect can cause the change of the flood water level of the starting point although the flood water level is higher than the flood tide level. As a result, considering the tidal effect at downstream boundary condition, water level indicates a periodicity of tide in particular region and the fluctuation range of water level is extended to upstream.

  • In this study, safety analysis of river in flash flood due to local extraordinary rainfall was conducted for the Hong-Je river, which was selected as a representative sample basin because it is one of the most urbanized rivers in Seoul. The rainfall data of precipitation 310.1 mm and probable maximum precipitation (PMP) 740.0 mm in July $14{\sim}15$, 2001 was used to perform safety analysis. Resulting of safety analysis of the flood control in Hong-Je river, case of the 50 year of design frequency, safety section, management section, and danger section were represented to be 85%, 15%, and 0% respectively. For the 200 year of design frequency, safety section decreased by 6% and management section and danger section increment by 4% and 2%, respectively, The variation of management section was not observed with respect to 200 year of frequency. Little variation of safety value for management section for 300 and 500 of frequency increased by 8% and 12% relative to 50 year of frequency, respectively. management section and danger section for 1000 year of frequency increased by 19% and 13% relative to 50 year of frequency.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of vegetation on the flood plain in the Taewha river on the changes of flood level using a hydraulic physical model experiment. To simulate 9.0 km river, 1/300 horizontally and 1/72 vertically distorted model was used. The vegetation areas were divided by three sub -areas and the flood level changes were examined according to the locations of vegetation as well as the transverse Profile. As a result, the flood level changes were not significantly affected by the densely distributed vegetation. It was concluded that additional adjustable vegetation in urban river could make useful hydrophilic space.

  • In Korea, every year during the summer season, typhoons and torrential rains cause floods and damage to property. In particular, the Imjin River basin is characterized by steep slopes, narrow upstream areas, and low flat downstream areas, which are vulnerable to floods. In addition, damages occurred due to unauthorized discharge in the Hwanggang Dam, a large dam upstream of the Imjin River in North Korea. In order to prevent such flood damage, Korea is constructing the Gunnam Flood Control Site in 2010 to prevent flood damage. However, even after the construction of the flood control zone, the flood control capacity is only 20% of the maximum water level of the Hwanggang dam. This study used LAHARZ_py program to calculate flood damage area in the northern part of Gyeonggi province. As a result, when the discharge of Hwanggang dam exceeding the flood control ability of Gunnam flood control zone occurs, damage to Yeoncheon-gun and Paju-si of Gyeonggi-do was expected. This study will be useful as a material to prepare for flood damage.

  • The determination of the design flood based on probabilistic concepts is one of the important matters of the general field of hydrology. Until now, Most of any existing formulas to predict the flood flow were estimated by very different values with each other when we applied these formulas to the small basin, in extreme case, which were estimated over top be 400% of a difference because these have been developed by foreigners or derived from the big basin. The objective of this thesis is to examine closely the characteristics of frequency flood flow for reliable prediction of the flood flow through the probabilistic method in hydrology and to develop the ($Q_T=27.74T^{0.178}A^{0.594}$) applicable to the river of Kangwon province.

  • The prediction of a design-flood hydrograph at a particular site on a river may be based on the derivation of discharge or stage hydrograph at an upstream section, togeater with a method to route this hydrograph along the rest of river. On the other hand, flood routing methods provide a useful tool for the analysis of flooding in all but the smaller catchment, and these methods are largely stored into hydrological method and hydraulic method. Although the Muskingum Method as a hydrological method ignores dynamic effects on the flood wave, Muskingum-Cunge Method based on hydraulic method is possible to improve the method so that it gives a good approximation to the solution of the linear convective-diffusion equation. This is made on the basis of the finite diffeience equation for the Muskingum Method. In the study, the outflows predicted by Muskingum-Cunge Method are campared with the observed outflows of the Pyung Chang River.

  • Various facilities in the river working in a complex interdependence network result in both desired and adverse effects. Among these, the weir crossing the river continuously acts in various ways, such as securing river maintenance flow and water level during dry-period, and rising flood level during rainy period. Until now, weir planning was only limited to flood mitigation management. Recently, the demand for securing river environment functions is increasing. Therefore, the necessity for an environmental flow has emerged. Nevertheless, there is no analysis and evaluation of the ecological functional aspects applying the environmental flow when planning facilities. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and systematize an assessment method that considers not only flood control but also river environment. Environmental flow was applied to the weir named Dondaet-bo and hydraulic analysis was conducted for each retention, demolition, and re-installation case. Also, this research was conducted to minimize the impact on the surrounding river facilities and flood assessments from previous perspectives were performed. The study result demonstrated a plan to reinstall the weir as a natural riffle. Through this study, it is expected that the flood control and environmental functions of rivers can be secured in combination.

  • The Szentgotthard Flood Protection Project is located in the southeasters part of Austria, very close to the Hungarian border and to the Hungarian town of Szentgotthard situated near the Junction of the rivers Lafnitz and Raab. During heavy rainstorms, this area has always been liable to severe floodings, affecting the town itself and upstream reaches, where major industrial and commercial development is planned. In order to solve these problems, several solutions have been developed by means of a series of model tests performed at the hydraulic laboratory of the Technical University of Graz, Austria. The model was constructed to scales 1:75 (lengths) and 1:25 (heights). This trebled scale allowed greater accuracy in the measurement of discharge depths. The results from the model tests have led to the following proposals: - Construction of a flood relief trough with an inflow section 3.5 km upstream of the junction of the rivers Lafnitz and Raab. - Use of a former river bed for the flood relief trough. - Design of a lowered embankment crest section to pass one-third of the maximum flood flow of the river Lafnitz. - Connection of the flood relief trough to the Lahnbach stream, a tributary of the river Raab.
