  • Population of small mammals (Apodemus agrarius and Crocidura lasiura) was monitored to identify the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in Gumho river basin around Daegu city. The small mammals were captured during 28 of May~12 of June, 2002. The techniques of live-trapping and snap-trapping were applied to capture the animals. A total of 39 animals were captured among which 53.3% (16130) of population were reached to breeding. Heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd) were analyzed. According to the analysis of heavy metal elements, Zn was more accumulated in kidney (6.83 mg $kg^{-1}$) than in liver (3.66). However, the accumulation of Cu was higher in liver than in kidney. Even though this site was relatively away from major industrial zones, heavy metals were wide spread along the stream of Gumbo River. This is the first quantitative study of small mammal bioaccumulation of heavy metals in Korea so that further research should be followed in other industrial areas that heavy metals were widely dispersed.

  • This study was conducted to clarify the preference and habitat condition of small mammals at the Hyeongsan river in Ulsan, Gyeongju, and Pohang from January 2003 to July 2003. In the study sites, total 111 individuals of Apodemus agrarius, Rattus norvegicus, and Micromys minutus were captured in study sites. The most abundant species were Apodemus agrarius, 79.2 percent, among the captured small mammals. Density of habitation was significantly higher in agricultural land than in either private house or woods. However, they were more abundant in paddy Weld area than in agricultural land. A number of captured small mammals were higher in herbaceous rather than three other vegetation types. Existent of river embankment and its type were important factors affecting the spatial distribution of the individuals. Preference of small mammals were significantly lower in revetment block area rather than in none or nature-stone mat area. There was significantly correlationship between the depth of water and the number of captured small mammals. A number of captured small mammals were clearly increased in reference to decreasing depth of water in study site, in conclusion, the following factors such as the vegetation structure, depth of water, types of land use and types of river dike could be affected the spatial distribution of small mammals in the study sites.

  • The rapid increase in number and diversity of Extended Spectrum ${\beta}$-Lactamases (ESBLs) producing Enterobacteriaceae in natural aquatic environment is a major health concern worldwide. This study investigates abundance and distribution of ESBL producing multidrug resistant Enterobacteriaceae and molecular characterization of ESBL genes among isolates from highly polluted stretch of river Yamuna, India. Water samples were collected from ten different sites distributed across Delhi stretch of river Yamuna, during 2014-15. A total of 506 non duplicate Enterobacteriaceae isolates were obtained. Phenotypic detection of ESBL production and antibiotic sensitivity for 15 different antibiotics were performed according to CLSI guidelines (Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute, 2015). A subset of ESBL positive Enterobacteriaceae isolates were identified by 16S rRNA gene and screened for ESBL genes, such as $bla_{CTX-M}$, $bla_{TEM}$ and $bla_{OXA}$. Out of 506 non-duplicate bacterial isolates obtained, 175 (34.58%) were positive for ESBL production. Susceptibility pattern for fifteen antibiotics used in this study revealed higher resistance to cefazolin, rifampicin and ampicillin. A high proportion (76.57%) of ESBL positive isolates showed multidrug resistance phenotype, with MAR index of 0.39 at Buddha Vihar and Old Delhi Railway bridge sampling site. Identification and PCR based characterization of ESBL genes revealed the prevalence of $bla_{CTX-M}$ and $bla_{TEM}$ genes to be 88.33% and 61.66%, respectively. Co-occurrence of $bla_{CTX-M}$ and $bla_{TEM}$ genes was detected in 58.33% of the resistant bacteria. The $bla_{OXA}$ gene was not detected in any isolates. This study highlights deteriorating condition of urban aquatic environment due to rising level of ESBL producing Enterobacteriaceae with multidrug resistance phenotype.

  • East Parts of Bangladesh have been benifited by low cost energy generated by domestic natural gas but West parts where energy generated by imported fuel. Bangladesh Government authority has very much concerned to transmit the low cost electricity to the West from the East for past several years. To solve such concerns, cross-country 230kv double circuits Power transmission line was proposed, however there was a big obstacle for the realization of this line to cross the Jamuna river which has 12 km long width with a deep muddy river bed. A consultant engineering firm named Merz-Mclellan anyway finalized this plan and a world-wide bid was announced on June 31, 1979. Due to the expected difficulty to construct the towers on sea like area, only three construction groups have participated. including a Korean joint venture organization of Samsung-Korean Developement corporation-Kolon Electric Machinery company. After 3 months bid evaluation, contract was awarded to Korean Consosium and KEM Co was in charge of designing steel towers with anchor bolts and base plates beside to electrical engineering field. Then KEM Co have faced and over-comed many unenpected technical difficulties such as forced eccentricity joint on base plate, distorsion issue of 60mm thick plates welding, threading anchor bolts, tad heat treatment of some anchor bolts, disagreement from Consultant Engineer on multiplying factor of leg stresses for 45$^{\circ}$ wind and on reducing O.L.F for wind loads on cables for such 1220km long spans. After spending two years long period for designing and engineering towers, base plates, and anchor bolts, first shipment of tower was finally realized on Nov. 8, 1981 and on the other hand KDD has proceeded concrete caisson work on schedule at Jamuna river site and expected to complete tower erection and stringing of cables within this year of 1982 which was original completion target.

  • In this study, changes in the composition of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were investigated using water samples collected at a downstream site of the Namhan River near the Lake Paldang ($N37^{\circ}24^{\prime}05.33^{{\prime}{\prime}}E127^{\circ}32^{\prime}25.01^{{\prime}{\prime}}$) during a heavy rain event from July 23 to July 28, 2008. The DOC concentrations varied from 1.68 to 3.18 mg/L with the maxium value at a peak of the river water level. Each DOC sample was fractionated into three compositions including hydrophilic (Hi), hydrophobic acid (HoA) and hydrophobic neutral (HoN) fractions. The results showed that HoA was most abundant fractions, constituting 47.2~56.5% of DOC. Refractory dissolved organic carbon (R-DOC) contents were also determined by measuring the DOC concentration after 28-day dark incubation of the samples. R-DOC content was in the range from 83 to 99% of DOC and it was significantly correlated with HoA contents (r = 0.91, p<0.005), while it did not exhibit such a good correlation with the fractions of Hi and HoN (p>0.02). Our results suggest that the HoA, which is associated with humic substances, may be a major composition of refractory organic matters in rivers during storm events.

  • We estimated monthly and annual secondary productivity of pelagic zooplankton in Lake Paldang and Lake Cheongpyong. Secondary productivity was calculated by combining estimated zooplankton biomass and biomass-specific productivity for each site and depth from March to November 2008. In addition to somatic production, we measured production of eggs and exuviae for three dominant species: Daphnia galeata, Bosmina longirostris, Cyclops sp. In terms of biomass, B. longirostris was dominant in Lake Paldang in April and May, B. longirostris showed explosive biomass growth, especially in May. In June and July, B. longirostris and D. galeata were both dominant. Lake Cheongpyeong showed much lower zooplankton biomass than Lake Paldang. In August, there was little or no biomass in both lakes probably due to heavy rain. The Gyeongan River contributed most of the secondary productivity and B. longirostris contributed the most secondary productivity in Lake Paldang. D. galeata also contributed in the Gyeongan River, the South Han River and at the Paldang Dam in spring and fall. Overall, Lake Cheongpyeong showed lower secondary productivity than Lake Paldang. B. longirostris made the largest contribution to secondary productivity in the Cheongpyeong Dam area while D. galeata contributed the most near Nami Island. Somatic production constituted ~80% of the total secondary productivity (the sum of somatic, egg and exuvia production) for D. galeata and B. longirostris. Although production-to-biomass (P/B) ratios were usually <<1 B. longirostris sometimes showed very high P/B ratios, probably due to fish predation. D. galeata showed much lower P/B ratios than B. longirostris after the summer at most sites.

  • In our Koreans river basins there are many of monthly rainfall data, but unfortrnately streamflow data needed are rare. Analysing monthly rainfall data of Somjin river basin, the stochastic theory model for calculation of monthly streamflow series of that region is determined. The model is composed of Box & Jenkins stansfer function plus ARIMA residual models. This linear stochastic differenced time series equation models can adapt themselves to the structure and variety of rainfall, streamflow data on the assumption of the stationary covarience. The fiexibility of Box-Jenkins method consists mainly in the iterative technique of building an AIRMA model from observations and by the use of autocorrelation functions. The best models for Somjin river basin belong to the general calss: $Y_t=($\omega$o-$\omega$_1B) C_iX_t+$\varepsilon$t$ $Y_t$ monthly streamflow, $X_t$ : monthly rainfall, $C_i$ :monthly run-off, $$\omega$o-$\omega$_1$ : transfer parameter, $$\varepsilon$_t$ : residual The streamflow series resulted from the proposed model is satisfactory comparing with the exsting streamflow data of Somjin gauging station site.
