A Multi-Group Analysis of Risk Management Practices of Public and Private Commercial Banks

  • The study examines the relationship between credit risk and operational risk (understanding of risk management, risk identification, risk assessment and control, and risk monitoring) on risk management practices followed by private and public sector commercial banks. The cross-sectional data method was used to check the impact of risk management practices. Data was collected from the bank employees and a total of 284 respondents were finally selected for further analysis. Measurement Invariance of Composite Models analysis is used to test the quality of the measurement model for sub-samples, and multi-group analysis is used for path analysis in sub-sample through PLS-SEM. The findings of the study as the total sample show that both types of banks are managing adequate and significant risk management practices. On the other hand, sub-groups' results show private sector banks are more momentous than public sector banks. Risk identification is significantly different at the sub-group level, which shows public sector banks are more concentrating on this type of risk. Understanding of risk management has no significant effect on both types of banks and risk assessment & control for public sector banks, and there is a difference in the risk management practices among private and public sector commercial banks.

Capability, Service Orientation, and Performance in the Investment Management Industry

  • Prior research has emphasized the significant effect of service orientation on organizational performance. However, little research on service orientation has been conducted in the financial field, including the investment management service industry in which high quality service for clients is required. In this paper, we propose a research model that centers on the concept of service orientation as a type of dynamic capability affecting firm performance. The research variables include job competency, risk management capability, operational capability, service orientation, and service performance. We assume that service orientation partially mediates the effects of risk management capability and operational capability on service performance. To test the model, we collected data from 391 fund managers in 86 teams (37 investment management companies) and analyzed it with partial least squares (PLS) method. Each of the 391 fund managers was asked to answer team level measures, which is effective for team level analysis. We find that job competency positively affects both risk management capability and operational capability, which in turn affect service orientation. Risk management capability and operational capability are assumed to directly affect service performance. However, risk management capability does not influence perceived service performance, whereas operational capability does affect it. This result indicates that risk management capability does not directly affect service performance. However, via service orientation, considering that risk management inconveniences customers and is geared to enhance service orientation, service performance is positively affected. Operational capability does not influence service orientation, whereas it affects perceived service performance. This result reveals that operational capability directly affects firm performance. As expected, service orientation significantly affects the service performance perception of fund managers. This study contributes to the literature by introducing service orientation to the financial industry and measures and tests team-level service performance. Our findings also provide insights to practitioners because to enhance team performance, managers must focus on service orientation in addition to operational capability.

The Relationship on Risk Type, Risk Management and Business Performance - Evidence from Korean FDIs in China

  • Purpose - As the well-known Structure-Conduct-Performance paradigm implies, risk structure of a corporation may affect its risk management activity and the activity may in turn determine its performance. Depending on its goal, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) can shape its risk structure, risk management and its performance. Under this assumption, we investigate the relationship between the goals of FDI and risk management for the first time in academics. Design/methodology - This empirical research uses a survey of 279 current Korean enterprises' FDIs in China with the recently developed business risk quadrant model. Companies are classified into either a market- or an efficiency-seeking group, to identify how each group perceives and manages risks, and values the performance of risk management. Also, we apply integrated risk management method that multinational corporations have introduced in China, then verify the mediating effect between risk factors and performance. Findings - Our research shows the FDIs can expose themselves to differing risk structure although risk management activities simply represent the level of empowerment given to local management by headquarter due to limit of sample size despite diversity of risk and risk management tools. To sum, market seekers are found to have more strategic risk (revenue related risk) than efficiency seekers with financial risk (cost related risk). The market seekers can manage their risk by empowering their local organisation while the efficiency does the opposite ways. The risk management appears to be successful in general. Originality/value - Previous studies on small and medium enterprises' FDIs to China have concentrated on the analysis of entry determinants, withdrawal factors and individual risk management. Meanwhile, this research establishes enterprise-wide risk factors faced by the companies that advance into China, according to the method of the classification by ERM and verifies if they could synthetically improve performance through risk corresponding measures.

  • 최근 대내외적인 건설환경의 급격한 변화와 건설공사의 대형화${\cdot}$복잡화 추세는 내외부적으로 많은 리스크 요인을 증대시키고 있기 때문에, 이에 대한 합리적이고 효율적인 관리방안의 중요성이 크게 대두되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 리스크 관리방안의 하나로서, 사업추진과정에서의 공사비 증액이 매우 제한되어 있어 입찰단계에서 견적금액의 불확실성 요소(예비비)를 고려해야만 하는 턴키공사 등 대형 건설공사를 대상으로, 이에 내재된 리스크요인의 정량화를 통해 합리적이고 적절한 예비비를 산정할 수 있는 모델을 제시하고자 한다. 예비비 산정모델의 개발을 위하여 실제 수행된 프로젝트를 선정하여 각 공사의 예비비 집행현황, 공사비 현황 등의 자료를 토대로 공사비에 영향을 미치는 인자를 도출하였으며, 몬테칼로 시뮬레이션(Monte Carlo Simulation)과 영향도(Influence Diagram), 의사결정 수형도(Decision Tree)를 혼합한 CRM(Cost Risk Model)을 적용하여 이러한 리스크 인자의 영향을 구조화하였다. 또한 구축된 모델을 기 완료된 대형공사에 적용하여 그 타당성을 검증하고자 하였다.

Development of a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis Based Risk Assessment Tool for Information Security

  • Risk management is recognized as a significant element in Information Security Management while the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is widely used in risk analysis in manufacturing industry. This paper aims to present the development work of the Information Security FMEA Circle (InfoSec FMEA Circle) which is used to support the risk management framework by modifying traditional FMEA methodologies. In order to demonstrate the "appropriateness" of the InfoSec FMEA Circle for the purposes of assessing information security, a case study at Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) is employed. The "InfoSec FMEA Circle" is found to be an effective risk assessment methodology that has a significant contribution to providing a stepwise risk management implementation model for information security management.

  • Many companies consider environment management system as the main back-bone system. Also, risk management is considered as hot issue in world wide leading companies. In view of efficiency , it is necessary to combine or integrate the environment management system and the risk management system. In this paper, we aim to propose an approach to integrate the environment management system(ISO 14001) and the risk management system (JIS Q 2001).

Understanding Relationships Among Risk Factors in Container Port Operation UsingBayesian Network

  • This study aimed to determine relationships among risk factors influencing container port operation using Bayesian network. Risk factors identified from prior studies were classified into five groups: human error, machinery error, environmental risk, security risk, and natural disasters. P anel experts discussed identified risk factors to fulfil conditional probability tables of the interdependence model. The interdependence model was also validated by sensitivity analysis and provided an interrelation of factors influencing the direction of each other. Results of the interdependence model were partially in line with results from prior studies while practices in the global port industry confirmed interrelationships of risk factors. In addition, the relationship between top-ranked risk factors can provide a schematic drawing of the model. Accordingly, results of this study can expand the prior research in the Korean port industry, which may help port authorities improve risk management and reduce losses from the risk.

해외 건설 프로젝트의 환리스크 관리를 위한 의사결정 지원 모델 (A Decision Support Model for the Exchange Risk Management of Overseas Construction Projects)

  • 해외 건설 프로젝트의 수주 물량은 2001년 이후 지속적으로 증가하여 2010년에는 전체 건설 프로젝트 수주 물량의 44.5%를 차지하고 있다. 해외건설 프로젝트는 프로젝트의 성패에 영향을 미치는 환경적 요소가 국내의 경우보다 다양하며 이에 따라 리스크 관리는 더욱 복잡해지고 있다. 현재까지 해외 건설 프로젝트의 리스크 관리에 관한 연구는 특정 지역 혹은 프로젝트의 발생 가능한 리스크 요인을 도출하고 이에 대한 관리 방안을 제시하는 연구가 주를 이루어 왔으나, 최근 환율 변동성의 확대로 인한 환 리스크의 중요성 및 관리기법에 관한 연구는 전무한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 환율 변동 및 환리스크 관리 옵션(통화선도, 통화스왑, 이자율 스왑)에 따른 최근 6년간 국내 주요 건설사별 손익현황 분석 결과 및 통계 기법을 활용하여 건설사로 하여금 환리스크 선호도에 따라 해외건설 프로젝트의 환리스크를 효과적으로 관리해 나갈 수 있도록 하는 의사결정 지원 모델을 제시하고자 한다. 본 연구를 통해 제시된 환리스크 관리 의사결정 지원 모델 및 방법론은 건설사 등 해외 건설 프로젝트 수행주체가 환리스크를 사전에 예측하고 대응해 나감에 있어 주요 의사소통의 도구로써 적극 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

  • In a super-highrise residence project, a project manager needs to form the long-term risk management plan which covers the problems from the beginning of project to the time of demolition. The cause and responsibility for a risk are clarified and quantitatively evaluated through the life cycle of a project. Development of the system which supports a risk strategy effectively is needed as a project becomes complex. In this paper, through the life cycle of a specific super-highrise residence project, a risk phenomenon is specified from a viewpoint of each participant, and the mathematical model is formulated choosing the combination of the optimal strategy against a risk quantitatively within a fixed risk strategy budget.
