  • Ring-stiffened cylinders are widely used as the pressure hull of submarines and underwater vehicles. For large ring-stiffened cylinders cylindrical shells are fbricated by cold rolling of flat plates and then welding of curved shells. After forming cylinders ring-stiffeners are welded on th the cylinders. Due to these cold roiling and welding initial shape imperfections and residual stresses exists in fabricated ring-stiffened cylinders. It is well known that the initial shape and material imperfections affect the ultimate strength of ring-stiffened cylinders significantly. In this paper previous researches on the effects of initial shape imperfections and residual stresses are briefly reviewed Recently a numerical analysis computer program was developed to predict the ultimate strength of ring-stiffened cylinders subjected to hydrostatic pressure, which is based on the Dynamic Relaxation technique. This program was employed to numerically investigate those effects. The numerical predictions were substantiated with relevant experimental results.

피스톤 링 마찰 특성의 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Frictional Characteristics of the Piston Ring)

  • A friction tester to measure friction force generated at the interface between the piston ring and the cylinder liner was developed. Modified piston ring is bar-shaped and 100mm long. Surface of the modified piston ring is machined by the profile grinding machine to be formed as a shape of an arc of a circle. Measured data are treated as mean effective friction force and power loss. From this test it can be confirmed that friction force is deeply affected by surface shape of the piston ring and viscosity of supplied oil. Friction force is deeply affected by surface shape of the piston ring and viscosity of supplied oil. Friction force is decreased and power loss is increased with increasing velocity. And it is known that region of mixed lubrication is broader than estimated with theoretical analysis. it is expected that this tester can be used as the optimization tool of the surface shape of the piston ring at the first stage of development of the piston rings.

  • The optimal design for the shape of metal ring obturator under the high pressure using parameter study on the stress analysis considering effects of design variable is presented and is compared to experimental results. The design variables are such as thickness, taper, radius of shape of the obturation ring. For optimization of the obturation ring, the weight is maximized subject to maximum stress of the obturator within allowable stress. The design constraints are geometric elements of design variables. The trends of parametric study are in good agreement with the experimental results.

구속 링을 이용한 관 결합 공정의 응력해석 (Stress Analysis of Pipe Connection Process Using Clamping Ring)

  • The pipe connection process using a clamping ring is used for joining small pipes in the refrigerator and air-conditioner industries instead of the brazing process, which induces inevitable thermal deformation in the pipes. However, few studies have been carried out on the process to select optimal parameters in joining pipes, and studies on the relation between the process parameters of the connection and connecting force of the joint have not been conducted. In this study, the connection process of pipes with the clamping ring was modeled using the finite element method (FEM) and analyzed to obtain the contact stress distribution between the pipes with which the connecting force of the joint was estimated. Considering the characteristics of pipe connection, the process was modeled and simulated in a two-dimensional axisymmetric solution domain. With the numerical model, the effect of ring shape on the connection was studied by adding a projection to the end of a ring or changing the length of a ring. The results of the analyses revealed that the contact stress distribution could be predicted with the suggested model. The effect of the ring shape was also presented. The effect of any combination of process parameters could be easily estimated through the related analyses.

선박용 중형 디젤 엔진 피스톤 링의 면압 산출 (Surface Pressure of the Piston Rings in the Diesel Engine of a Ship)

  • The proper surface pressure on the pistons rings in the diesel engine of a ship is very important, because the pressure controls the oil that is needed to maintain friction at acceptable levels between the pistons and the cylinders. In this paper, basic and theoretical concepts to compute the ring pressure were formulated and applied to obtain the proper surface pressures on selected sample piston rings. During the calculation of the pressure on the piston rings, the computation of the accurate free shape of the piston ring was required. Earlier, Arnold and Prescott introduced theories to compute the free shapes of piston rings, and their approach used rectangular and polar coordinates. In this paper, the free shapes of piston rings using two different theories were computed and compared. The results were quite close, representing the free shape of the piston ring. Ring pressure was computed using the Arnold's free shape that was obtained. A simple GUI was made to compute the surface pressure on the piston rings.

  • Aerospace engine application needs to stand high temperature and pressure. Because of its mechanical properties such as high strength at high temperature, Alloy 718 is used aerospace engine application about 80%. But alloy 718's mechanical properties cause some problem to manufacturing profile ring like damage of material and mold. In this study, alloy 718's mechanical properties investigated for knowing its formability and using FE-Simulation for designing profile ring roll process and mold shape. Profile ring rolling processing is designed with "Initial material$\rightarrow$Blank$\rightarrow$Linear Ring$\rightarrow$Profilering". Blank's heating temperature is setting $1100^{\circ}C$ for manufacturing a trial profile ring on the basis of FE-Simulation. As a result of manufacturing alloy 718 profile ring, it is possible to make near target profile shape ring with all of the processing condition which gives in this study.

  • This paper proposes a new approach for the shape design of the rotating outer-ring type epicycloid plate gear by using instant velocity center. First, this method defines the instant velocity centers for rotating outer-ring type epicycloid plate gear and calculates the contact angles and the contact points by using the geometric relationships and the kinematic properties of the reducer. Second, it generates the full shape of the cycloidal plate gear. Finally, the paper develops CAD-program for construction of the design automation using the proposed method. This CAD-program is developed to have the functions of the friendly user interface and the simulation of the real operation for the cycloid reducer.

The trends of parametric study are in good agreement with the experimental results. The more thickness the higher stress. The more taper the higher stress. And maximum stress of circumferential surface is larger than maximum stress of forward surface. The design variable!; are such as thickness, taper, radius of shape of the obturator. In order to optimize the shape of obturation ring, the weight is maximized subject to maximum stress of the obturator within allowable stress. The design constraints are geometric elements of design variables.

수공구 손잡이 형태에 따른 청.노년층의 악력과 손가락 힘 및 편안함 분석 (Grip Force, Finger Force, and Comfort analyses of Young and Old People by Hand Tool Handle Shapes)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate aging (young and old), gender (male and female), and handle shape effects on grip force, finger force, and subjective comfort. Four handle shapes of A, D, I, and V were implemented by a multi-finger force measurement (MFFM) system which was developed to measure every finger force with different grip spans. Forty young (20 males and 20 females) and forty old (20 males and 20 females) subjects participated in twelve gripping tasks and rated their comfort for all handles using a 5-point scale. Grip forces were calculating by summation of all four forces of the index, middle, ring and little fingers. Results showed that young males (283.2N) had larger gripping force than old males (235.6N), while young females (151.4N) had lower force than old females (153.6N). Young subjects exerted the largest gripping force with D-shape due to large contribution of the index and middle fingers and the smallest with A-shape; however, old subjects exerted the largest with I-shape and the smallest with V-shape due to small contribution of the ring and little fingers. As expected, the middle finger had the largest finger force and the little finger had the smallest. The fraction of contribution of index and ring fingers to grip force differed among age groups. Interestingly, young subjects provided larger index finger force than ring finger force, whereas old subjects showed that larger ring finger forces than index finger force in the griping tasks. In the relationship between performance and subjective comfort, I-shape exerting the largest grip force had less comfort than D-shape producing the second largest grip force. The findings of this study can provide guidelines on designing hand tool handle to obtain better performance as well as users' comfort.

링 조명에 의한 BGA 볼의 3차원 형상 인식 (Shape Recognition of a BGA Ball using Ring Illumination)

  • Shape recognition of solder ball bumps in a BGA (Ball Grid Array) is an important issue in flip chip bonding technology. In particular, the semiconductor industry has required faster and more accurate inspection of micron-size solder bumps in flip chip bonding as the density of balls has increased dramatically. The difficulty of this issue comes from specular reflection on the metal ball. Shape recognition of a metal ball is a very realproblem for computer vision systems. Specular reflection of the metal ball appears, disappears, or changes its image abruptly due to tiny movementson behalf of the viewer. This paper presents a practical shape recognition method for three dimensional (3-D) inspection of a BGA using a 5-step ring illumination device. When the ring light illuminates the balls, distinctive specularity images of the balls, which are referred to as "iso-slope contours" in this paper, are shown. By using a mathematical reflectance model, we can drive the 3-D shape information of the ball in aquantitative manner. The experimental results show the usefulness of the method for industrial application in terms of time and accuracy.
