  • The proper surface pressure on the pistons rings in the diesel engine of a ship is very important, because the pressure controls the oil that is needed to maintain friction at acceptable levels between the pistons and the cylinders. In this paper, basic and theoretical concepts to compute the ring pressure were formulated and applied to obtain the proper surface pressures on selected sample piston rings. During the calculation of the pressure on the piston rings, the computation of the accurate free shape of the piston ring was required. Earlier, Arnold and Prescott introduced theories to compute the free shapes of piston rings, and their approach used rectangular and polar coordinates. In this paper, the free shapes of piston rings using two different theories were computed and compared. The results were quite close, representing the free shape of the piston ring. Ring pressure was computed using the Arnold's free shape that was obtained. A simple GUI was made to compute the surface pressure on the piston rings.

  • The gas pressure acting on the rings in internal combustion engine influences the friction and wear characteristics. Inter-ring pressure variation during engine operation results from cylinder gas flow through a piston-ring pack. The flow passages consist of ring end gaps and clearances between the ring and the piston groove. The gas flow in the clearance between the ring and the groove is directly affected by the axial motion of the ring in the groove. In this paper the asperity contact force is newly considered in the prediction of the clearence between the ring and the groove surface. This term must be taken into account physically in case that the clearance get narrow rather than asperity height between the ring and the groove surface. Finally, comparisons of calculated inter-ring gas pressures based on the analytical method are made with the measured ones. The agereement was found to be good below midium engine speed, 3000rpm. In order to obtain accurate analytical results to the extend of high rpm range, it is recommended to include oil ring motion as well as top and second ring in analytical model.

  • The optimal design for the shape of MIL-S-46119 ring obturator under the high pressure using parameter stud:』 on the stress analysis considering effects of design variable is presented, and it is compared to experimental results. The trends of parametric study are in good agreement with the experimental results. The more thickness the higher stress. The more taper the higher stress. And maximum stress of circumferential surface is larger than maximum stress of forward surface. The design variable!; are such as thickness, taper, radius of shape of the obturator. In order to optimize the shape of obturation ring, the weight is maximized subject to maximum stress of the obturator within allowable stress. The design constraints are geometric elements of design variables.

  • In this paper, the contact stress and strain distributions in elastomer O-ring seals have been analyzed using a non-linear finite element method. The stress behavior of PTFE materials is assumed as Odgen model because the sealing clearance between the flange and the surface of the O-ring is not small and the sealing pressure of working fluids covers from the atmospheric pressure to high pressure of 15MPa. The contact normal force and stress in wavy O-rings in which is developed for this analysis are uniformly distributed along the flange and the wall of the rectangular groove. And the normal sealing forces are also kept high compared to other contact sealing models such as the conventional O-ring and X-ring, Thus, the FEM computed results indicate that the sealing characteristic of wavy O-rings is food compared with other contact seals.

  • Internal ring beams are primary components of new ring-stiffened cooling towers. In this study, numerical simulation of the internal flow field of a cooling tower with three ring beams under wind-thermal coupling effect is performed. The studied cooling tower is a 220-m super-large hyperbolic indirect natural draft cooling tower that is under construction in China and will be the World's highest cooling tower, the influence of peripheral radiators in operating cooling tower is also considered. Based on the simulation, the three-dimensional effect and distribution pattern of the wind loads on inner surface of the cooling tower is summarized, the average wind pressure distributions on the inner surface before and after the addition of the ring beams are analyzed, and the influence pattern of ring beams on the internal pressure coefficient value is derived. The action mechanisms behind the air flows inside the tower are compared. In addition, the effects of internal ring beams on temperature field characteristics, turbulence kinetic energy distribution, and wind resistance are analyzed. Finally, the internal pressure coefficients are suggested for ring-stiffened cooling towers under wind-thermal coupling effect. The study shows that the influence of internal stiffening ring beams on the internal pressure and flow of cooling towers should not be ignored, and the wind-thermal coupling effect should also be considered in the numerical simulation of cooling tower flow fields. The primary conclusions presented in this paper offer references for determining the internal suction of such ring-stiffened cooling towers.

  • Gaskets are usually used for the sealing of flange joints. The joint is usually composed of two flanges, a ring gasket and clamping bolts. The metal ring gasket is suitable for pipe flanges, pumps and valve joints in high temperature and high pressure environments. A very high surface stress is developed between a ring type joint gasket and the flange groove when the ring type joint is bolted up in a flange. The dimensions of flanges and ring joint gaskets for the pipe sizes that are in common use are specified in the ANSI codes. However, sometimes it is necessary to make a new design for the flange joint which is not specified in the codes, as the equipment is getting larger and larger in size. This paper presents the contact behavior of Class 600 ring joint gaskets with oval and octagonal cross sections. Five different sizes of gaskets are employed in the analysis, and one of them is newly designed on the basis of analysis results obtained from existing models. Three load steps are used to find the stress, stain and contact pressure etc., and to compare the contact characteristics among the models due to the bolt clamping force and the working surface pressure. ANSYS Workbench version15 is used to conduct the finite element analysis.

  • The surface roughness between a piston ring pack and a cylinder liner directly affects the fuel economy, the oil consumption, and the emission of the engine so that it is very important to clarify the surface roughness effects on the lubrication characteristics. The friction characteristics of the piston ring during engine operations are known to as mixed lubrication experimentally. In this study to simulate the effects of the surface roughness of the piston ring pack on the lubrication characteristics, the mixed lubrication analysis of piston rings was performed using the simplified average Reynolds equation. From the results the surface roughness was found be considerably affects minimum oil film thickness as well as FMEP(Friction Mean Effective Pressure). Especially, the oil ring was the most sensitive on the surface roughness.

  • The floating ring seal has the ability of minimizing clearance without rubbing phenomenon. However, the seal ring can be unstable due to extremely high lock-up eccentricity ratio arisen from the poor design of height and surface finish of the ring. The exact prediction of the lock-up position of the floating ring is necessary to design the floating ring properly. The governing equations are developed and solved numerically. The test facility for the measurement of the boundary-lubrication-friction coefficient of the ring‘s surface has been established. Based on the results of analysis, the geometric conditions of the floating ring seal are suggested for operating at a low lock-up eccentricity ratio.

  • Total thickness variation (TTV), BOW, and surface roughness are essential characteristics for high quality sapphire substrates. Many researchers have attempted to increase removal rate by controlling the key process parameters like pressure and velocity owing to the high cost of consumables in sapphire chemical mechanical polishing (CMP). In case of the pressure approach, increased pressure owing to higher deviation of pressure over the wafer leads to significant degradation of the TTV. In this study, the authors focused on reducing TTV under the high-pressure conditions. When the production equipment polishes multiple wafers attached on a carrier, higher loads seem to be concentrated around the leading edge of the head; this occurs because of frictional force generated by the combination of table rotation and the height of the gimbal of the polishing head. We believe the skewed pressure distribution during polishing to be the main reason of within-wafer non-uniformity (WIWNU). The insertion of a hub ring between the polishing head and substrate carrier helped reduce the pressure deviation. Adjusting the location of the hub ring enables tuning of the pressure distribution. The results indicated that the position of the hub ring strongly affected the removal profile, which confirmed that the position of the hub ring changes the pressure distribution. Furthermore, we analyzed the deformation of the head via finite element method (FEM) to verify the pressure non-uniformity over the contact area Based on experiment and FEM results, we determined the optimal position of hub ring for achieving uniform polishing of the substrate.
