  • We have developed a practical Brillouin active fiber ring sensor of length less than 20m, by employing an optical amplifier to compensate for most of the connection losses in the ring. The loss reduction brings the standard Brillouin threshold from 21 down to 0-0.1 through the enhancement of the finesse of the ring. However, in the course of our experiments, some level of temporal instability and chaotic behavior in the backscattered Stokes intensity and also in its spectral line shift were consistently observed.   • Tubular joints of jacket structures are usually reinforced using thicker can section, internally ring stiffeners, diaphragm, or externally gusset plates to increase load carry capacity. In this paper, the effect of reinforcement type and geometric parameters of stiffener on the ultimate strength of tubular X-joints subjected to brace compression have been studied numerically Three reinforcement methods were considered; (1)can reinforcement (2)internally ring stiffener (3)internally longitudinal diaphragm. The ANSYS software was used nonlinear strength analysis. It was found that there is significant strength enhancement for reinforced joints.

  • The variation of Jahn-Teller(J-T) distortion imposed on various metallo- tetraphenylporphyrins(MTPPS;M=ZnⅡ,PdⅡ,PtⅡ,and RhⅢ) has been investigated by time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopy. B1g and B2g modes of the triplet(π,π*) states for the heavy-metal porphyrins exhibit the enhancement of their intensities compared with those of 3ZnⅢTPP, while the enhancement of phenyl internal mode is reduced. These results suggest that the J-T distortion becomes manifest as the metal size increases, and consequently the porphyrin-to-phenyl ring charge transfer in the excited triplet state is inhibited.

  • This paper describes the implementation of DCS communication network that provides high bandwidth and reliability. The network for DCS in this paper adopts the Reflective Memory (RM) architecture and Fast Ethernet physical media that have 100 Mbps bandwidth. Also, This network uses Ring Enhancement Device (RED) which is invented to reduce the time delay of each node. The DCS network that is introduced in this paper is named as ERCNet (Ethernet based Real-time Control Network). This paper describes the architecture and working algorithms of ERCNet and performs numerical analysis. In addition, the performance of ERCNet is evaluated by experiment using the developed ERCNet network.

  • A more efficient method for obtaining the fatigue life enhancement of a structure member with fastener holes is described. It is based on the combined process of cold-expansion and ring-indentation. Residual stresses were induced onto premachined holes using ring-indentation process near the fastener hole combined with cold-expansion. And residual stresses at the vicinity of a hole were evaluated using a fracture mechanics approach. The compressive residual stresses were larger using the combined process than is in the case of simple cold-expansion. Fatigue testing of aluminum specimens showed that the fatigue crack growth retardation emanating from a circular hole was greater for the combined process than for a simple cold-expansion alone.

LES of Turbulent Mixing of Non Reacting Flow in a Gas Generator

  • LES analysis was conducted with in-house CFD code to investigate the turbulence evolution and interaction due to turbulence ring and splash plate in the gas generator. Though chemical reaction was not accounted for, the results can be useful in determining the turbulence characteristics generated by ring and plate. The calculation results show that the installation of turbulence ring can introduce additional turbulences and improve turbulent mixing in the downstream flow. However, the addition of splash plate in the downstream of TR brings totally different shape of perturbation energy and enstrophy distribution for turbulent mixing. This enhancement can be done by the formation of the intensively strong vorticity production and mixing behind the plate. Pressure drop was found to be a reasonable level of about 1% or less of initial pressure in all calculation cases. Also, calculation results revealed that the variation of TR shape and intrusion length did not change the characteristics of turbulent mixing in the chamber. Even though the effect of installation location of splash plate on the turbulent mixing is not investigated yet, calculation results conclude the addition of splash plate leads to the increase in turbulent mixing with an acceptable pressure drop.

  • A method for miniaturization of microstrip patch antenna without degrading its radiation characteristics is investigated in this paper. It involves perforating the patch to form a microstrip square-ring antenna, and it's BW enhancement is investigated numerically and experimentally. A ring geometry introduces additional parameters to the antenna, and those are used to control impedances, resonance frequencies, and bandwidths. For a single square ring antenna, an increase of the size of perforation increases its input impedance, decreases the resonance frequency, and bandwidths. But it affects little on directivity of the antenna. To match the antenna to a transmission line and also enhance its bandwidth, the ring is stacked by a square patch or another square ring. Also numerically simulated results by the IE3D, and experimental data are compared for proof.

Frequency Doubling in LiIO3 Crystals by the Ring Enhancement Cavity (고리형 증폭 공진기에 의한 LiIO3결정에서 제2조화파 발생)

  • The second harmonic, wavelength is 397nm, of the continuous wave diode laser, whose maximum power is 35mW, was generated in $LiIO_3$ crystals in a ring enhancement cavity. 5mm- and 10mm-long crystals cut $43.21^{\circ}$ for optic axis were used in this experiment. Both surfaces of those were anti-reflection coated for 794nm. In case the crystal was inserted into the cavity, the condition of separation between two concave mirrors for the optimum mode matching was found. The conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation was increased by the resonant enhancement of pumping power in the ring enhancement cavity, and the frequency of diode laser was locked to that of the counter-propagation mode generated from the surface of crystal. When the pumping power was 28 mW, the infrared buildup factor was about 45 without the crystal, and 14 with the crystal due to the transmission loss of crystal. The maximum second harmonic powers of $1.5{\mu}W$ and $6.6{\mu}W$ were obtained, and corresponding conversion efficiencies were $(6.584{\pm}0.56){\times}10^{-3}$%, $2.6{\pm}0.21){\times}10%{-2}$% in 5mm- and 10mm-long $LiIO_3$, respectively.

8K Programmable Multimedia Platform based on SRP (SRP 를 기반으로 하는 8K 프로그래머블 멀티미디어 플랫폼)

  • In this paper, we propose a world's first programmable video processing platform for video quality enhancement of 8K ($7680{\times}4320$) UHD (Ultra High Definition) TV at 60 frames per second. To support huge computation and memory bandwidth of video quality enhancement for 8K resolution, the proposed platform has unique features like symmetric multi-cluster architecture for data partitioning, ring data-path between clusters to support data pipelining, on-the-fly processing architecture to reduce DDR bandwidth, flexible hardware to accelerating common kernel in video enhancement algorithms. In addition to those features, general programmability of SRP (Samsung reconfigurable processor) as main core of the proposed platform makes it possible to upgrade continuously video enhancement algorithm even after the platform is fixed. This ability is very important because algorithms for 8K DTV is under development. The proposed sub-system has been embedded into SoC (System on Chip) and new 8K UHD TV using the programmable SoC is expected at CES2015 for the first time in the world.

Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma in Organ Recipient

  • We report a case of primary central nervous system(CNS) lymphoma in an organ recipient. A 33-years-old man who underwent a renal transplantation 3years previously presented with headache and vomiting. In Brain computed tomography scans and magnetic resonance images showed multiple periventricular cystic rim enhancing masses. Pathologic diagnosis by stereotactic biopsy revealed malignant non-Hodgkins B-cell lymphoma. After pathologic confirmation, methotrexate chemotherapy and whole brain radiation therapy were done. Having experienced such a case, the authors strongly recommend to add primary CNS lymphoma as one of the differential diagnoses to brain abscess, metastatic brain tumor and glioblastoma multiforme in cases of multiple ring enhancing periventricular lesions of immunocompromised patient or organ recipient.
