  • We investigated influence of continuous application of gypsum(G:$CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O$), popped rice hulls(H) and zeolite(Z) on soil aggregation of reclaimed silt loam soils. The application rates amended to silt loam from reclaimed soils at Saemangeum of Mangyeong were varied as follows; 1550(G1), 3100(G2), 6200 (G3) gypsum kg/10a, 1000(H1), 2000(H2), 3000(H3) popped rice hulls kg/10a, and 200(HZ1), 400(HZ2), 800(HZ3) zeolite kg/10a added to 1500 popped rice hulls kg/10a, respectively. In addition, the bermuda grass was growing, and the soil aggregates were analyzed for 60, 90 and 120 days after treatments(DAT). At 60 DAT, the effect of treatment was in order of G>H${\geq}HZ$, and the 1550kg/10a(G1) was the highest as 52.48%. At 90 DAT, the effect of treatment was also in order of G>H>HZ. Those was 3.78-3.12, 2.03-3.03 and 1.79-2.57 times in compared with the control, respectively. At 120 DAT, the effect of treatment was similar continued in order of G>H>HZ. Those was 3.00-2.20, 1.06-1.64 and 0.92-1.23 times in compared with the control, respectively. In conclusion, we found that the continuous application for two year of gypsum, popped rice hulls and zeolite was excellent above the 1 year, and the effect of the treatment for soil amendments of reclaimed silt loam soil was excellent in order of G>H>HZ.

  • The growth responses of Chinese Cabbage, lettuce, and spinach were evaluated to investigate the feasibility of carbonized rice-hulls as a sanitary cultivation media instead of soil. The carbonized rice-hulls were pretreated with several inorganic acid such as nitric, sulfuric, hydrochloric, and phosphoric acid for neutralization. The neutralization of the carbonated material using nitric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acid did not alter the growth responses of these vegetables compared to those of control plants grown on the normal cultivation soil. Especially, the nitric acid pretreatment resulted in the better growth of these plants than the mixture of soil and compost. This is probably due to the additional supply of the nitrate-nitrogens. However the growth responses of lettuce and spinach on the carbonated materials neutralized with hydrochloric acid were different and appeared to be having symptom which is analogous to the chloride toxicity during the late stage of growing. Although no difference was observed in chemical composition, the contents of protein-nitrogen were higher in the plants grown on the carbonated material compared to those of plant grown on the mixture of soil and compost. Based on our preliminary results, the carbonized and neutralized rice-hulls are very useful bed material for the sanitary cultivation under the controlled environmental condition.

  • Composting by negative aeration is a reasonable proposition to control odor generated during composting process. Cattle manure and rice hulls mixtures were composted in a bin composting system by negative aeration. Continuous(CA) and intermittent(IA) aeration methods were applied to analyze the composting characteristics. The composting temperature and the ammonia emission during composting were investigated according to the aeration methods. The main problem for the negative aeration was the generation of condensate in the suction line of blower. The quantity of condensate was significant for continuous aeration. The aeration method should be modified to escape from the cooling effect of continuous aeration at the initial stage of composting. It took a longer time to finish a composting for intermittent aeration on account of lower aeration. It was concluded that the composting by negative aeration could be accomplished by either continuous or intermittent aeration method if the flow rate would be controlled more efficiently and the water vapor in suction line of blower could be removed effectively. Ammonia emission increased up to maximum value of 675ppm for continuous aeration while 300ppm for intermittent aeration. However, the cumulative value of ammonia emission was larger for intermittent aeration than for continuous aeration.

  • Broiler litter can be used as a feedstuff for ruminants. Fifty seven litter samples collected from 47 farms in Kyungkee Province of Korea were analyzed to assess the effects of type and amount of bedding (rice hulls vs. sawdust), season (winter vs. summer) and drinkers (bell- vs. trough-type) on composition of broiler litter. Rearing conditions of broilers were also surveyed from the farms to estimate annual production rate of litter. Nutrient composition of broiler litter varied widely and moisture and ash concentrations were higher than observed by other researchers. Ash concentration was higher (p<0.05) for samples taken in winter than in summer and higher (p<0.05) in the rice hulls- than in the sawdust-based litter both in winter and summer. Only minor differences in litter composition were noted between drinkers. Ash was negatively correlated with crude protein and neutral detergent fiber (p<0.01), and acid detergent fiber (p<0.05). The estimated litter production rate was 2.7 kg per bird per flock on a wet basis (60% DM) and the annual production rate was 12.7 kg per bird per yr (60% DM). Therefore, the 42 million broilers per month grown in Korea in 1999 produced a total of 533,400 metric tons of litter.

  • Recently, a greater interest has been placed on the methods of acration control for management of maloders during composting. This study was performed to evaluate the influence of the intermittent aeration method on the composting temperature and chemical components. Combinatoins of cattle manure and rice hulls were placed on a batch composter(3,150-L size) practically designed. The chemical properties of the produced compost were suitable for plant growth, when composting temperature was maintained in the range from 45 to $66^{\circ}C$ for 42 days. It should be noted that cooling effect of intake air was not significant because air temperature was as high as $30^{\circ}C$. Heat and aeration loss from the composter did not affect biomass decomposition by microbes during composting. Mixtures of materials with C/N ratios higher than 30 required longer composting period.

  • In comparison of physicochemical properties between expanded rice hulls (ERH) and a commercial nursery soil (Bunong), the pH and content of organic matters were higher in ERH than those of Bunong soil. However, the content of available phosphate, $\textrm{NH}_4\textrm{-N}$ and $\textrm{NO}_3\textrm{-N}$ were lower in ERH as compared with Bunong soil. The growth characteristics of seedlings were evaluated for 15-day old seedlings grown in five different nursery soils including ERH. The plant height was the tallest (22.8cm) in Bunong soil and shortest (12.8cm) in ERH. There was no difference in number of leaves among five types of nursery soils. The best results based on the seedling quality and root intensity was obtained from the seedlings grown in the nursery soil which ERH was used for bedding and Bunong soil for covering in the seed tray. The weight of a seed tray with Bunong soils was 27% heavier than that of 'ERH + Bunong soil'.

  • F. roseum "Graminearum" and F. moniliforme were isolated from hulls of seeds collected from fields. F. roseum "Graminearum" was isolated from brown rice of all the varieties tested. F. moniliforme was isolated from Nagdongbyeo, Seomjinbyeo, Sinsunchalbyeo, Milyang 23, Baegyangbyeo and Samnambyeo. F. moniliforme was isolated from the most of the seeds damaged by sparrow and it formed sporodochia of this fungus. Five species including F. moniliforme were isolated from plant hopper collected from paddy fields in September. To select seed a disinfectant, twelve fungicides were tested and P242 was one of the best effective fungicidetested. After seed treatment with the fungicide, F. moniliforme was not isolated from hulls but was frequently isolated from brown rices.

  • The rumen degradability of rice straw (untreated, urea-sprayed, urea-treated), grasses (Panicum maximum, Pennisetum clandestinum) and rice bran was compared. The mean in vivo organic matter digestibility of the untreated (US), urea-supplemented (SS) and urea-ammonia treated (TS) rice straw were 50.9, 53.9 and 57.4%, respectively. Rice bran contained extremely high levels of acid-insoluble ash (25.2% DM), and its OMD was 36.1%. Grasses had OMD values around 66%. Degradability measurements were performed with buffaloes using the nylon bag technique. The organic matter (OM) disappearance data were fitted to an model which was used to describe degradation pattern. The mean potentially degradable fraction for US, SS and TS was 61.5, 61.9 and 69.4%, respectively. Urea-ammonia treatment increased both the amount of OM degraded and the rate at which it was degraded in the rumen. Both grasses had similar values for degradable fraction (around 65%) and for rate constant for degradation (0.04). Rice bran contained high proportions of readily soluble material (23.9%), but the degradable OM fraction was only 13.2%. The low quality of rice bran is attributed to the contamination of rice hulls during processing.

  • Three new compounds orizaanthracenol (1-methoxyanthracen-2-ol, 1), 1-hydroxy-7-((2S,3R,4R,5S)-2'',3'',4''-trihydroxy-5''-(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydro-2H-pyran-1-yloxy)anthracen- 2-yl 3',7'-dimethyloctanoate (2) and 1-hydroxy-7-((2S,3R,4R,5S)-2'',3'',4''-trihydroxy-5''-(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydro-2H-pyran-1-yloxy)anthracen- 2-yl 3',7',11',15',19'-pentamethyltricosanoate (3) have been isolated and determined from the rice hulls of Oryza sativa. The structures of the compounds were elucidated using 1D and 2D NMR spectral methods, viz: 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, COSY and HSQC, and HMBC aided by IR, EIMS and FAB-MS. These isolated compounds were tested in bioassay on germination of radish to detect their inhibitory activities, in which compound 1 exhibited the most inhibition at the concentration of 40 ppm was 50.96% of total dry weight. Furthermore, germination and growth of radish were reduced by 27 to 48%, and dry weight of shoot and root were arranged from 50 to 52%, whilst compounds 2 and 3 exhibited weak inhibition than 1.

  • This onfarm study was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding deepstacked broiler excretasaw dustrice hulls(DBSR) pellets on feed intake, production and economy of growing Hanwoo steers and Holstein bulls. Formulated mix and rice straw were replaced at 16% and 48% levels for growing Hanwoo steers(6 wk of feeding period) and at 4% and 18% levels for Holstein bulls(12 wk) with DBSR pellets. Control and treated diets were formulated to be isoenergetic and DBSR pellets were fed ad libitum. Palatability of DBSR pellets turned out to be favorable. Compared with the control group, feeding DBSR pellets did not affect body weight gain, average daily gain and feed efficiency(P>0.05). Feed cost per gain was reduced by 18.5% for Hanwoo steers and 3.5% for Holstein bulls. Feeding DBSR pellets to Holstein bulls did not affect carcass weight and grades of meat yield and quality. These results indicate that deepstacked cage broiler excreta mixture may be effectively used as a feed ingredient for growing ruminants.
