  • Red rice (local name "Sore") as a weed has been a serious threat to rice production in direct-seeded rice culture in Ganghwagun, Gyeonggi province. In the Ganghwagun 508 ha out of 1,420 ha in the Samsanmyeon area is infested with red rice. The average lowland rice yield is about 4,300 kg/ha in the Ganghwagun, but the average upland rice yield is about 2,000 kg/ha in infested area. This study was carried out in order to clarify the ecological characteristics of red rice and factors affecting the competitive ability of five red rice varieties, collected from Samsanmyeon in 1981, with rice cultivar. Five varieties-Monggeunsare, Salsare, Ginkaragsare, Galsaegsalsare, Galsaegkaragsare-showed the same morphological characteristics of cultivated Japonica type, Chuncheongbyeo, but red rice tillers more profusely, is taller and lodges more easily than Chucheongbyeo. It shatters easily about 10-15 days after heading date, and at this time the hull is discolored in yellow or dark brown. There are many types of red rice with short or long owns on the spikelet, occasionally with or without own on the spikelet in the same hill, and the grains are short or long. In red reice leaf blast occurs more severely than in cultivated Indica/Japonica type, Teabaegbyeo, particulary serious in Monggeunsare. When red rice invaded in direct-seeded rice, number of panicles of rice became reduced more than other yield components.

  • Three new compounds orizaanthracenol (1-methoxyanthracen-2-ol, 1), 1-hydroxy-7-((2S,3R,4R,5S)-2'',3'',4''-trihydroxy-5''-(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydro-2H-pyran-1-yloxy)anthracen- 2-yl 3',7'-dimethyloctanoate (2) and 1-hydroxy-7-((2S,3R,4R,5S)-2'',3'',4''-trihydroxy-5''-(hydroxymethyl)tetrahydro-2H-pyran-1-yloxy)anthracen- 2-yl 3',7',11',15',19'-pentamethyltricosanoate (3) have been isolated and determined from the rice hulls of Oryza sativa. The structures of the compounds were elucidated using 1D and 2D NMR spectral methods, viz: 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, COSY and HSQC, and HMBC aided by IR, EIMS and FAB-MS. These isolated compounds were tested in bioassay on germination of radish to detect their inhibitory activities, in which compound 1 exhibited the most inhibition at the concentration of 40 ppm was 50.96% of total dry weight. Furthermore, germination and growth of radish were reduced by 27 to 48%, and dry weight of shoot and root were arranged from 50 to 52%, whilst compounds 2 and 3 exhibited weak inhibition than 1.

  • Gypsum treated to fine sandy loam increased the fornation of >2 mm aggregates in $1,550kg\;CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O\;10a^{-1}$ (Kbfg1) and $3,100kg\;CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O\;10a^{-1}$ (Kbfg2) to compare with control, Kc, at 60DAT, and bigger aggregates in general at 90DAT. The higher treatment of gypsum level, the <0.1 mm aggregates were less decreased as in Kbfg1, Kbfg2, and $6,200kg\;CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O\;10a^{-1}$ (Kbfg3) and aggregates of 0.25->2 mm were increased with increasing level of gypsum with more effective in Kbfg2 and Kbfg3 at 120DAT. Gypsum treated to silt loam increased aggregates of 2.0-1.0 and 1.0-0.5 mm in $3,100kg\;CaSO_4{\cdot}2H_2O\;10a^{-1}$ (Mbfg2) to compare with control (Mc), at 60DAT. Degrees of aggregation from 0.5-0.25 mm to >2 mm aggregates at 90DAT were distinctly higher. The higher treatment of gypsum level accelerated more aggregation of silt loam soil, and aggregates of 0.5-0.25 mm was most increased in Mbfg2 at 120DAT. Popped rice hulls treated to fine sandy loam increased aggregates of 2.0-1.0 mm in plots of $1,000kg\;10a^{-1}$ (Kbfhl) only to compare with control (Kc), at 60DAT, and aggregates of >2 mm and 2.0-1.0 mm Kbfh1 at 90DAT. At 120DAT, aggregation by popped rice hulls was most effective in Kbfbl pot. Popped rice hulls treated to silt loam increased in aggregates of >2 mm and 2.0-1.0 mm in $2000kg\;10a^{-1}$, Mbfb2 to compare with control, Mc, at 60DAT. Degrees of aggregation by popped rice hulls at 90DAT were higher in $1,000kg\;10a^{-1}$, Mbfh1, and Mbfh2, and at 120DAT was in $3,000kg\;10a^{-1}$, Mbfb3. Zeolite treatment with popped rice hulls, $1,500kg\;10a^{-1}$, increased in >2.0 mm aggregates in $1,000kg\;10a^{-1}$, Kbfbz1, $2,000kg\;10a^{-1}$, Kbfbz2, $3,000kg\;10a^{-1}$, Kbfhz3, and Mbfbz1, $1,000kg\;10a^{-1}$, Mbfbz2, $2,000kg\;10a^{-1}$, and $3,000kg\;10a^{-1}$, Mbthz3, to compare with control (Kc and Mc), at 60DAT. irrespective of soil texture. At 90DAT, >2.0-0.5 mm aggregates increased in Kbfhz1 of fine sandy loam. aggregates of >0.25 mm in $200kg\;10a^{-1}$ (Mbfbz1), $400kg\;10a^{-1}$ (Mbfhz2), $800kg\;10a^{-1}$ (Mbfhz3) of silt loam increased with the level of zeolite treatment. At 120DAT, the effect of zeolite treated to both soils showed the decrease of <0.1 mm aggregates. As the result, soil amendments for soil aggregation was more effective in the order of popped rice hulls+Zeolite > gypsum > popped rice hulls in fine sandy loam, and in the order of gypsum > popped rice huUs+zeolite > popped rice hulls in silt loam, respectively.

  • In order to improve feed values of Korean agricultural by-products, various treatments including physical, chemical, physicochemical and fermentation were suggested in th is review article. Physical treatments such as chopping, grinding and pelleting reduce partiole size of agricultural by-products, and increase passage rate from the rumen, thus may increase voluntary feed intake and weight gain. Digestibility and voluntary feed intake of straw, rice hull and sawdust, also, may be increased by chemical treatment using sodium hydroxide or ammonia. Especially, because nitrogen content of by-products increase and toxic problem is not posed by ammonia treatment, it's practical usage is recommended in Korea. Silage or fermentation treatment using principles of microbial fermentation may improve palatability of low quality by-products. As mentioned above, it is concluded that various treatments suggested are desirable and improve feed value but may raise several problems. Unfortunately, because cost for installation and products is great and processing work is complicate, farmers are not using well these processing methods until now. Therefore, in order to increase the practical usage at farm level, it is thought that many research works be achieved for efficient process which have simple operation and low installation cost.

  • In this study, we attempted to find substitute materials, swelling rice hull, cocopeat, corncob and coconut sawdust, for sawdust in bottle cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus. Chemical characters of mixture substrates with four substitute materials for pine sawdust were not different significantly. By comparison in mycelial growth and yield of fruitbody, mixture substrate of cocopeat were showed the same level in P. ostreatus. Therefore, it is suggested that cocopeat was substituted for sawdust for cultivation of P. ostreatus.

  • This study was performed to investigate the pollution-free Korean traditional papermaking characteristics from paper mulberry by sulfomethylation pulping. Bast fibers were pulped by sulfomethylated cooking liquor, and by alkali and alkali-peroxide processes for the comparison. Sulfomethylated pulping resulted in the superior pulp with high yield and better quality compared to those of alkali and alkali-peroxide pulps. Since the pulp was so bright, there was almost no need additional bleaching. Pollutant loads of sulfomethylated pulping effluent were very low in terms of pH, turbidity and color compared to those of alkali. Pollution-free effluents was accomplished by simple filtering treatment with pine bark, charred rice hull and sawdust compost. Pine bark was the most effective in reduction rate of pollutants.

  • Isogenic lines for glabrous leaf (gl), hull color(gh) and glutinous endosperm (wx) were used to clarify the effects of the gl, gh and wx gene on the grain yield and yield components in rice plant. Eight genotypes: glgl ghgh wxwx, glgl ghgh WxWx, glgl GH-wxwx, glgl GH-WxWx, GL-ghgh wxwx, GL-ghgh WxWx, GL-GH-wxwx and GL-GH-WxWx were evalutated in the backcrossed $F_2$ generation. Significant effects were measured for gl genotypes on heading date, gh genotypes on grain fertility, and wxwx genotypes on number of panicles per hill and 1, 000 grain weight. The grain yield of straw hull and non glutinous lines were higher than gold hull and glutinous lines. The interaction of three genes, gl, gh and wx was significant for heading date, but not significant in other characters. The average value of isogenic lines which were combined with two recessive genes and one dominant gene were lower and the C.V. value was higher than the isogenic lines which were combined with two dominant genes and one recessive gene in all characters except plant height and number of grains per plant. The average value of isogenic line combined with three recessive genes was lower and the C.V. was higher than the isogenic line combined three dominant genes in all characters measured.

  • This study was intended to provide the basic design creteria for the refrigerated storage, and to estimate the required optimum capacity of refrigerator for the different sizes and kinds of the existing fruit storage. The structural characteristics of the existing fruit storages in Pyungtaek-khun of Kyungki-do were surveyed. The average out-door air temperature during the expected storage life after harvesting, was obtained by analyzing the weather information. The heat transfer rates through the different models of storage walls were estimated. The refrigerating load required for different models of fruit storage was analyzed in the basis of out-door air temperature. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows: 1. The fruit storages surveyed were constructed on-ground, under-ground and sub-ground type buildings. The majority of them being the on-ground buildings are mostly made of earth bricks with double walls. Rice hull was mostly used as the insulating materials for their walls and ceilings. About 42% of the buildings were with the horizontal ceiling, 22% with sloped ceiling, and about 36% without ceiling. About 60% of the storage buildings had floor without using insulated material. They were made of compacted earth. 2. There is no difference in heat transfer among six different types of double walls. The double wall, however, gives much less heat transfer than the single wall. Therefore, the double wall is recommended as the walls of the fruit storage on the point of heat transfer. Especially, in case of the single wall using concrete, the heat transfer is about five time of the double walls. It is evident that concrete is not proper wall material for the fruit storage without using special insulating material. 3. The heat transfer through the storage walls is in inverse proportion to the thickness of rice hull which is mostly used as the insulating material in the surveyed area. It is recommended that the thickness of rice hull used as the insulating material far storage wall is about 20cm in consideration of the decreasing rate of heat transfer and the available storage area. 4. The design refrigerating load for the on-ground storages having 20 pyung area is estimated in 4.07 to 4.16 ton refrigeration for double walls, and 5.23 to 6.97 ton refrigeration for single walls. During the long storage life, however, the average daily refrigerating load is ranged from 0.93 to 0.95 ton refrigeration for double walls, and from 1.15 to 1.47 ton refrigeration for single walls, respectively. 5. In case of single walls, 50.8 to 61.4 percent to total refrigerating load during the long storage life is caused by the heat transferred into the room space through walls, ceiling and floor. On the other hand, 39.1 to 40.7 percent is for the double walls. 6. The design and average daily refrigerating load increases in linear proportion to the size of storage area. As the size increases, the increasing rate of the refrigerating load is raised in proportion to the heat transfer rate of the wall. 7. The refrigerating load during the long storage life has close relationship to the out-door air temperature. The maximum refrigeration load is shown in later May, which is amounted to about 50 percent to the design refrigerating load. 8. It is noted that when the wall material having high heat transfer rate, such as the single wall made of concrete, is used, heating facilities are required for the period of later December to early February.
