The lipid compositions of buckwheats produced in Korea were analyzed. The samples used in this experiment were as follows; Kyungbuk rice buckwheat. Kangwon hull buckwheat and Kangwon rice buckwheat. The total lipids were extracted and fractionated to neutral lipids, glycolipids and phospholipids respectively by silicic acid column chromatography (SACC). As a result, neutral lipids content of these three samples were in the range of 82.77-95.65%; glycolipids in 1.97-10.83%; and phospholipids in 2.21-6.40%. The composition of neutral lipids of these three samples showed that triglyceride were in the range of 88.7-92.0%; monoglyceride in 2.3-4.0%; free fatty acid in 3.0-3.7%; diglyceride in 0.7-0.8%.; free sterol in 0-0.7%; and steryl esters in 0-2.2%. The major fatty acids of total lipid, neutral lipid, glycolipids and phospholipids of these three samples were oleic, linoleic and palmitic acids.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of growth medium in pots composed of upland soil(S), rice straw manure(M), carbonated rice hull(CRH), and their mixture on growth of tobacco cv. NC 82. The growth of shoot and root was vigorous in order of medium S+M+CRH>M>CRH>S. In M+S medium, root growth in the part of manure was superior to upland soil. But root growth of upland soil part in M+S plot was more vigorous than that in upland soil only. It is possibly due to be influenced by manure in M+S plot. Total length and weight of root, number of roots, and especially for development of adventitious root were closely related to shoot growth. Roots grown in upland soil part was brownish gray in color, while the roots in manure part was milky white. The milky white colored roots had longer life than others. It was concluded that root zone environments derived from several media in pots closely related to shoot growth and disease tolerance of tobacco plant.
This study was carried out to elucidate the effect of mulching materials on the growth of Chinese chive (Allium tuberusum Rottler) and weed control. Chinese chive was grown under five mulching materials, pine leaf, oak leaf, rice straw, rice hull and sawdust, at the Experimental Farm of Chungbuk National University from June 20, 2009 to September 30, 2009. Amaranthus mangostunus, Digitaria sanguinalis, Portuclaca. oleracea, Echinochioa crus-galli var. frumetacea and Setaria viridis were dominant weeds. Both pine and oak leaves were significantly effective mulching materials in terms of weed control indices in both nursery and field. Soil moisture contents were 1.2~3.7% higher in mulching, especially in oak leaf mulching. Mulching with pine leaf significantly increased plant height, sheath length, leaf length, bulb-, root- and leaf-weights and yield of Chinese chive, but there were no significant differences among the other mulching materials although better than those in non-mulching.
This study was carried out to investigate appropriate processing conditions for expanded rice hulls to be used as a medium material in nutrient cultures. The water holding capacity of expanded rice hulls produced by using a domestic grinder with 8 mm gap and 3 mm cutter height was 271.0, and the bulk density and CEC were 0.19g·m-3 and 37.0 cmol·kg-1, respectively. These values are higher than those of perilte. However, geometric mean diameter (GMD) of expanded rice hulls was 1.01mm which was smaller than that of perlite, indicating unfavorable porosity. After supplying nutrient solution, the faster water percolation in expanded rice than perlite required more frequent water supply. There was no significant difference in tomato fruit yield between expanded rice hull and perlite. The pH increase and the lack of nitrogen in early stage of culture are to be solved in the future.

This experiment had been conducted to determine optimal culture conditions for the growth and cut flowers of Calla (Zantedeschia 'Black Magic' 'Golden Affair') in highlands. Tubers of calla 'Black Magic' was treated with 0, 100, and $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ concentration of $GA_3$. ABA content in tubers and roots were twice higher ($20-25pmol{\cdot}mL^{-1}$) in control than in $GA_3$ treated tubers and roots. ABA contents in tubers was not consistent but ABA contents in roots increased with increasing $GA_3$ concentration. However ABA is in inverse proportion to GA. It was mean that GA of high contents was ABA of low contents. Calla 'Golden Affair' was treated with different mulching materials (Control, black PE, Reflective film, Rice hull) and $GA_3$ concentrations (0, 50, 100 and $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$). It was largest in the length of flower at mulching of reflective film, Rice hull and it was greatest in the number of cut flowers at the treated with $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$GA_3$, Therefore the proper condition was at $200mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$GA_3$ with reflective film mulching.
This study was carried out to compare the filtration effect of anaerobic digestion waste water by compost filtration bed. Three types of filtration systems were set for filtration test following to composition of bedding materials. Two filtration systems were filled with sawdust, rice-hull and wood-chip. And the other was filled with sawdust and rice-hull. Anaerobic digestion waste water was applied evenly on the surface of the filtration bed with spraying nozzle. The concentration of nitrogen, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), suspended solids (SS) of anaerobic digestion waste water was decreased by filtration treatment. The total nitrogen content was decreased from 1,313 mg/L to 1,090~1,293 mg/L and BOD concentration was decreased from 529.7 mg/L to 125~162.3 mg/L, respectively. The SS content was decreased from 69~79% by filtration process. In addition, the electrical conductivity (EC) was decreased from 10.22 ds/m to 7.91~8.31 ds/m.
Differences in the filling amount of substrates in container can influence severely on the soil physical properties and crop growth. This research was conducted to secure the fundamental informations related to the changes in soil physical properties as influenced by the filling amount of coir dust-based substrates in container. For the experiment, three substrates were formulated by blending coir dust (CD) with expanded rice hull (CD+ERH, 8:2, v/v), carbonized rice hull (CD+CRH, 6:4, v/v) or ground and aged pine bark (CD+GAPB, 8:2, v/v). Based on the optimum bulk density, the amount of substrates filled in 347.5mL aluminum cylinder were adjusted to 90, 100, 110, 120, and 130%. Then the changes in total porosity (TP), container capacity (CC), and air-filled porosity (AFP) by various filling amounts were measured. The TP decreased linearly in CD+ERH and CD+GAPB and quadratically in CD+CRH as the filling amounts of the media increased from 90% to 130%. The CC in CD+ERH and CD+GAPB media increased as the filling amount increased from 90% to 120%, then decreased in 130%, showing quadratic change. The CC in CD+CRH was the highest in 90% filling amount and decreased gradually as the filling amount of root medea increased. The AFPs in CD+ERH and CD+GAPB media were 38 and 37%, respectively in 90% filling amount and they decreased drastically until 110% filling, then gradually in 120 and 130% filling amount showing the quadratic changes. The AFP of CD+CRH at 90% filling amount was 22% and it decreased as the filling amount increased until 130%, showing linear change. These results indicate that the increase in filling amount of substrates influenced more severely the AFP than CC, and careful consideration on container filling is required to provide a better root condition thus maximize crop growth.
The purpose of this research was to develop ideal substrates for the production of good quality tomatoes in bag culture system and also to improve media with low or no environmental pollution by blending and mixing artificial substrate including peatmoss, perlite, vermiculite, granular rockwool, polyphenol resin foam, bark, and smoked rice hull. The highly efficient media proved by experiments were vermiculite, smoked rice hull, polyphenol resin foam, granular rockwool, and perlite, which showed good results in the early growth as well as the marketable yield of tomato in the bag culture. Tomato plants grown in the media mixed with peatmoss, vermiculite and granular rockwool at the ratio of 3 : 1 : 1(by volume) showed the highest marketable yield, and the next at the ratio of 2 : 1 : 1. The perlite-granular rockwool mixtures at the ratio of 2 : 3 and 1 : 4, and the peatmoss vermiculite mixtures at the ratio of 2 : 3 and 3 : 2, seemed to be promising media for bag culture.

Ultrafine dust causes asthma and respiratory and cardiovascular diseases when inhaled. Ammonia (NH3) plays a big role in ultrafine dust formation in the atmosphere by reacting with nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx) emitted from various sources. The agricultural sector is the single largest contributor of NH3, with the vast majority of emissions ensuing from fertilizers and livestock sector. Interest in using biochar to attenuate these NH3 emissions has grown. This experiment was conducted to study the effects of using rice hull biochar pyrolyzed at three different temperatures of 250℃ (BP 4.6, biochar pH 4.6), 350℃ (BP 6.8), and 450℃ (BP 10.3) on the emission of ammonia from soil fertilized with urea. The emissions of NH3 initially increased as the experiment progressed but decreased after peaking at the 84th hour. The amount of emitted NH3 was lower in soil with biochar amendments than in that without biochar. Emissions amongst biochar-amended soils were lowest for the BP 6.8 treatment, followed in an ascending order by BP 10.3 and BP 4.6. Since BP 6.8 biochar with neutral pH resulted in the lowest amount of NH3 emitted, it can be concluded that biochar's pH has an effect on the emissions of NH3. The results of this study, therefore, indicate that biochar can abate NH3 emissions and that a neutral pH biochar is more effective at reducing gaseous emissions than either alkaline or acidic biochar.
