  • The results of examining cultivation of tlyster mushroom using NSM(Non Sterilized Media) for determining the condition of artificially culturing oyster mushroom(Pleurotus ostreatus) are as follows. Mycelial growth an[1 density of oyster mushroom. were the highest in the medium of waste cotton(spinning) : corn cob(80 : 20, V/V) followed by the order of rice bran, beet pulp. Expecially, mycelial growth and density of oyster mushroom is the lowest at the mixture rate of 80% waste cotton(spinning) : 10% beet pulp. Mycelial growth and density of oyster mushroom. were the highest in the medium of cotton seed hull and beet pulp mixture followed by the order of rice bran, corn cob. Expecially, mycelial growth and density of oyster mushroom is the lowest at the mixture rate of 80% cotton seed hull : above 20% rice bran. Mycelial growth and density of oyster mushroom were the highest in the medium rate of 70% waste cotton(spinning), 10% corn cob and 10% beet pulp(V/V). Mycelial growth and density of oyster mushroom were the highest in the medium rate of 70% cotton seed hull , 10% corn cob and 10% beet pulp(V/V). Optimal concentration of NSM for the mycelial growth and density of oyster mushroom were shown to be 500 times concentration. Optimal water contents for the mycelial growth and density of NSM was 70%.

  • To evaluate the effect of fiber sources on chewing activity, five sheep were consecutively fed diets containing 45% of a fiber source selected from 7 tested fiber sources of alfalfa hay cube(AHC), corn cob (CC), corn silage(CS), cotton seed hull(CSH), peanut hull(PHL), rice straw(RS) and sugarcane bagasse (SCB). Number of chew showed significantly higher value in CC(p<0.001) then other sources. RS and CC had highest(p<0.01) rumination times of 352 and 367 min/d, respectively. CC also showed the highest number of chew per kg NDF intake(p<0.01), but rumination time per kg NDF intake showed no difference except CSH(p<0.001). These results suggest that chewing activities were greatly affected by the fiber sources, and therefore it should be accounted in the formulation for ruminant feed.

  • This study was conducted to study the effect of fiber sources on ruminal pH and buffering capacity and whole digestive tract digestibility with five ruminally fistulated sheep. Evaluated fiber sources were alfalfa hay cube (AHC), corn cob (CC), com silage (CS), cotton seed hull (CSH), peanut hull (PHL), rice straw (RS), and sugarcane bagasse (SCB). Sheep were fed consecutively a diet containing each tested fiber source $(45\%)$ with a corn-based concentrate diets $(55\%)$ during each experimental period. Ruminal pH showed no difference among fiber sources except the significantly lower pH at 8h (p<0.05) with RS (pH; 5.78) than those in other sources. Buffering capacity showed significant differences at 0h (p<0.05) and 2h (p<0.05) after feeding in CS compared to those from SCB and CC, while there was higher in PHL (p<0.01) at 12h post feeding except AHC than CC, CS, SCB, and RS. Dry matter digestibility was significantly higher in CS (p<0.001) than in other sources. Neutral detergent fiber digestibility was higher in CC, CS, CSH, and RS than other fiber sources (p<0.001). These results suggest that ruminal pH and buffering capacity and whole digestive track digestibility were significantly affected by fiber sources in ruminant diet, and, therefore, should be took those effects into account for TMR formulation.

  • Anthocyanins are water-soluble plant pigments that give rise to the red, purple, or blue colors observed in many crops. Especially purple pigment of colored rice represent biological activities has been an increased interest, due to the functional meal as a staple food. These health benefits have been attributed to antioxidant property of anthocyanin. However, there have been little genetic source for development of new and various colored rice variety. A recently developed new variety, 'Jungmo1020', showed an unique characteristic of blue color of rice grain hull. We identified the pigment petunidin-3-O-glucoside (Pt-3-G) as a major compound with a value of $176.3{\pm}2.3mg/100g$ (68.3%) from 80% MeOH with 1% HCl extracts by UPLC/MS/MS. The content of Pt-3-G in the extracts using a solvent of 100% MeOH with 1% HCl was the highest with the values of $183.8{\pm}2.5mg/100g$. In addition, these extracts showed excellent antioxidatative activities by DPPH and ABTs assay.

Study on the Application of Carbonized Rice Hull as an Environmentally Controlled Cultivation Media or Vegetable Crops;Effect of Acids for Neutralization of Carbonized Rice Hull on the Growth of Several Vegetable Crops

  • The growth responses of Chinese Cabbage, lettuce, and spinach were evaluated to investigate the feasibility of carbonized rice-hulls as a sanitary cultivation media instead of soil. The carbonized rice-hulls were pretreated with several inorganic acid such as nitric, sulfuric, hydrochloric, and phosphoric acid for neutralization. The neutralization of the carbonated material using nitric, sulfuric, and phosphoric acid did not alter the growth responses of these vegetables compared to those of control plants grown on the normal cultivation soil. Especially, the nitric acid pretreatment resulted in the better growth of these plants than the mixture of soil and compost. This is probably due to the additional supply of the nitrate-nitrogens. However the growth responses of lettuce and spinach on the carbonated materials neutralized with hydrochloric acid were different and appeared to be having symptom which is analogous to the chloride toxicity during the late stage of growing. Although no difference was observed in chemical composition, the contents of protein-nitrogen were higher in the plants grown on the carbonated material compared to those of plant grown on the mixture of soil and compost. Based on our preliminary results, the carbonized and neutralized rice-hulls are very useful bed material for the sanitary cultivation under the controlled environmental condition.

  • Effect of rice hull mulching and peat application on seedling yield of Panax ginseng was investigated in modified Yang-jig seedbed. Mulching and peat increased soil moisture content but effect was not additive. Seedling yield was positively correlated with magnesium organic matter, potassium especially with soil moisture and calcium. Straw mulching is expected to be superior for practice.
