The present study investigates the effects of rib arrangements and aspect ratios of a rectangular duct simulating the cooling passage of a gas turbine blade. Two different V-shaped rib configurations are tested with the aspect ratios (W/H) of 3 to 6.82. One is the continuous V-shaped rib configuration with $60^{\circ}$ attack angle, and the other is the discrete V-shaped rib configuration with $45^{\circ}$ attack angle. The square ribs with the pitch to height ratio of 10.0 are installed on the test section in a parallel arrangement for both rib configurations. Reynolds numbers based on the hydraulic diameter are changed from 10,000 to 30,000. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to measure local heat/mass transfer coefficients. For the continuous V-shaped rib configuration, two pairs of counter-rotating vortices are generated in a duct, and high transfer region is formed at the center of the ribbed walls of the duct. However, for the discrete V-shaped rib configuration with $45^{\circ}$ attack angle, complex secondary flow patterns are generated in the duct due to its geometric feature, and more uniform heat/mass transfer distributions are obtained for all tested cases

Heat transfer augmentation in a rib-roughened duct is affected by the rib configurations, such as rib height, angle of attack, shape, rib to rib pitch, and aspect ratio of a duct. These have been the main subjects in studying the average heat transfer and the friction loss of the fully developed flow. Investigating distributions of local heat transfer coefficients and flow patterns in a duct with the rib turbulators is necessary to find the characteristics of heat transfer augmentation and to decide the optimal configurations of ribs. In the present study the numerical analyses and the mass transfer experiments are performed to understand the flow through a rib roughened duct and the heat transfer characteristics with various angles of attack of ribs. A pair of counter-rotating secondary flow in a duct has a main effect on the lateral distributions of local mass transfer coefficients. Downwash of the rotating secondary flow, reattachment of main flow between ribs and the vortices near ribs and wall enhanced the mass transfer locally up to 8 times of that in case of the duct without ribs.

The local heat transfer and total pressure drops of developed turbulent flows in the ribbed rectangular convergent/divergent channels with ${\Lambda}/V-shaped$ ribs have been investigated experimentally. The channels have the exit hydraulic diameter ($D_{ho}$) to inlet hydraulic diameter ($D_{hi}$) ratios of 0.67 for convergence and 1.49 for divergence, respectively. The ${\Lambda}/V-shaped$ ribs with three different flow attack angles of $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $60^{\circ}$ are manufactured with a fixed rib height (e) of 10 mm and the ratio of rib spacing (S) to height (e) of 10 on the walls. Thermal performances of the ribbed rectangular convergent/divergent channels are compared with the smooth straight tube under identical pumping power. The results show that the flow attack angle of $45^{\circ}$ with ${\Lambda}-shaped$ rib has the greatest thermal performance at all the Reynolds numbers studied in the convergent channel; whereas, the flow attack angle of $60^{\circ}$ with V-shaped rib has the greatest thermal performance over Reynolds number of 30,000 in the divergent channel.

In this paper, the optimum shape and arrangement of ribs in the channel of a plate heat exchanger are studied. The following dimensionless geometric parameters of ribs are selected as design variables: rib height ($H_R$), angle of attack ($\beta$), rib pitch ($P_R$), rib distance (L) and aspect ratio of rib (AR). The optimization is performed by minimizing the objective function consisting of the Nusselt number and the friction factor. The optimal values of design variables are as follows: $H_R$=0.263, $\beta$=0.290, $P_R$=3.142, L: 3.954, AR=0.342. The pressure drop and the heat transfer of the optimum model, compared to those of the reference model, are increased by 15.1% and 41.6%, respectively.
This paper presents the thermal hydraulic performance of a three dimensional rib-roughened solar air heater (SAH) duct with the one principal wall subjected to uniform heat flux. The SAH duct has aspect ratio of 12.0 and the Reynolds number ranges from 2000 to 12000. The roughness has relative rib height of 0.045, ratio of dimple depth to print diameter of 0.5 and rib pitch ratio of 8.0. The flow attack angle is varied from $35^{\circ}$ to $70^{\circ}$. Various turbulent flow models are used for the heat transfer and fluid flow analysis and their results are compared with the experimental results for smooth surfaces. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results based on the renormalization k-epsilon model are in better outcomes compared with the experimental data. This model is used to calculate heat transfer and fluid flow in SAH duct with the compound roughness of V-shaped ribs and dimples. The overall thermal performance based on equal pumping power is found to be the highest (2.18) for flow attack angle of $55^{\circ}$. The thermo-hydraulic performance for V-pattern shaped ribs combined with dimple ribs is higher than that for dimple rib shape and V-pattern rib shape air duct.

The present study investigates the effects of various rib arrangements on heat/mass transfer in the cooling passage of gas turbine blades. A complex flow structure occurs in the cooling passage with rib turbulators which promote heat transfer on the wall. It is important to increase not only the heat transfer rates but also the uniformity of heat transfer in the cooling passage. A numerical computation is performed using a commercial code to calculate the flow structures and experiments are conducted to measure heat/mass transfer coefficients using a naphthalene sublimation technique. A square channel (50 mm $\times$ 50 mm) with rectangular ribs (4 mm $\times$ 5 mm) is used fur the stationary duct test. The experiments focus on the effects of rib arrangements and gap positions in the discrete ribs on the heat/mass transfer on the duct wall. The rib angle of attack is 60°and the rib-to-rib pitch is 32 mm, that is 8 times of the rib height. With the inclined rib angle of attack (60°), the parallel rib arrangements make a pair of counter rotating secondary flows in the cross section, but the cross rib arrangements make a single large secondary flow including a small secondary vortex. These secondary flow patterns affect significantly the heat/mass transfer on the ribbed wall. The heat/mass transfer in the parallel arrangements is 1.5 ∼2 times higher than that in the cross arrangements. However, the shifted rib arrangements change little the heat/mass transfer from the inline rib arrangements. The gap position in the discrete rib affects significantly the heat/mass transfer because a strong flow acceleration occurs locally through the gap.

The present study is conducted to investigate the effect of rib arrangements on an impingement/effusion cooling system with initial crossflow. To simulate the impingement/effusion cooling system, two perforated plates are placed in parallel and staggered arrangements with a gap distance of 2 times of tile hole diameter. Initial crossflow passes between the injection and effusion plates, and the square ribs (3mm) are installed on the effusion plate. Both the injection and effusion hole diameters are 10mmand Reynolds number based on the hole diameter and hole-to-hole pitch are fixed to 10,000 and 6 times of the hole diameter, respectively. To investigate the effects of rib arrangements, various rib arrangements, such as 90$^{\circ}$transverse and 45$^{\circ}$angled rib arrangements, are used. Also, the effects of flow rate ratio of crossflow to impinging jets are investigated. With the initial crossflow, locally low transfer regions are formed because the wall jets are swept away, and level of heat transfer rate get decreased with increasing flow rate of crossflow. When the ribs are installed on the effusion plate, the local distributions of heat/mass transfer coefficients around the effusion holes are changed. The local heat/mass transfer around the stagnation regions and the effusion holes are affected by the rib positions, angle of attack and rib spacing. For low blowing ratio, the ribs have adverse effects on heat/mass transfer, but for higher blowing ratios, higher and more uniform heat transfer coefficient distributions are obtained than the case without ribs because the ribs prevent the wall jets from being swept away by the crossflow and increase local turbulence of the flow near the surface. Average heat transfer coefficients with rib turbulators are approximately 10% higher than that without ribs, and the higher values are obtained with small pitch of ribs. However, the attack angle of the rib has little influence on the average heat/mass transfer.
The present study investigates convective heat/mass transfer and flow characteristics inside the cooling passage of the gas-turbine blades. It is important to increase not only the heat transfer rates but also the uniformity of heat transfer in the cooling passage. The square duct has compound-angled ribs with $60^{\circ},\;70^{\circ}$ and $90^{\circ}$ attack angles, which are installed on the test plate surfaces. a naphthalene sublimation technique is employed to determine the detailed local heat transfer coefficients using the heat and mass transfer analogy. The ribs disturb the main flow resulting in the recirculation and secondary flows near the ribbed wall and the vertices near the side-wall. The local heat transfer and the secondary flow in the duct are changed largely according to the rib orientation. Therefore, geometry and arrangement of the ribs are important fur the advantageous cooling performance. The angled ribs increase the heat transfer discrepancy between the wall and center regions because of the interaction of the secondary flows. The average heat/mass transfer coefficient and pressure drop of the ribs with the $60^{\circ}$$-90^{\circ}$ compound-angle are higher than those with the $60^{\circ}$ attack angle. Also, the thermal efficiency of the compound-angled rib is higher than that with the $60^{\circ}$ attack angle. The uniformity of heat/mass transfer coefficient on the cross ribs may is higher than that on the parallel ribs array.

In this study, the experiments are performed to investigate the local heat transfer and pressure drops of developed turbulent flows in the diverging square channels along the axial distance. The square divergent channels are manufactured with a fixed rib height (e) = 10 mm. Four different parallel angled ribs ($a=30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$) are placed on the channel's one-sided wall only. TThe measurement are conducted within the range of Reynolds numbers from 22,000 to 79,000. The results show that a rib angle-of-attack of $45^{\circ}$ produces the best heat-transfer performance.
The present study is to investigates the convective heat transfer characteristics and pressure drop inside the rib-roughened cooling passage of gas turbine blades. The divergent rectangular channel is fabricated with V-shaped ribs on one wall only and the inlet hydraulic diameter to outlet hydraulic diameter ratio($D_{ho}/D_{hi}$) of 1.49 is used. The current investigation has covered a Reynolds number (Re) range of 22,000~75,000, relative roughness height ($e/D_h$) of 0.1~0.2, and rib angle of attack (a) of $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, and $60^{\circ}$ for a fixed relative pitch of 10. Results show that the Nusselt numbers are the greatest in the $60^{\circ}$-angled ribs; however, the total friction factors are the highest in the $30^{\circ}$-angled ribs.
