  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Korean medical treatment in case of germ cell tumor patient treated by chemotherapy. Methods: The patient was treated with Korean medical treatment (herbal medicine, acupuncture) for 11 months. By taking computed tomography and laboratory testing, we could compare before and after. Results: The patient treated with combination of Korean medical treatment and Chemotherapy recovered after taking Korean medicine for 11 months. Panax ginseng, C.A. Meyer, Astragalus membranaceus, Rhus Verniciflua Stokes were main ingredient of the korean medical treatment. Conclusions: This report shows the Korean medical treatment is effective on Germ cell tumor patient. Korean medical treatment alleviates the side-effect of Chemotherapy such as nausea, vomiting, hot flush and anorexia. Also Blood test results prove long-term use of Korean medicine is safe for lung and kidney function.

  • Effects of cutting media on shooting and seedling characteristics were investigated to determine productivity of seedling by root cuttings of lacquer tree. Shoots developed at 3 weeks after cut planting on PV (peat moss : Vermiculite : 1 : 1), PVS (peat moss : Vermiculite : Sand : 1 : 1 : 2) and PVSC (peat moss : Vermiculite : Sand : Clay loam : 1 : 1 : 2 : 2) media, and shooting rate was the highest in PVSC medium at 10 weeks after cut planting among the treatments. Shooting numbers per scion on PH and PVC media were 2.2 but those on HSC medium was 1.3, which was not significantly different among media. PVSC medium was suitable to use the root cuttings of lacquer tree as it meets the qualifications requirements. Seedlings on PVSC medium were excellent to transplant in field as tree height, branch number, leaf number, stem diameter and leaf area were good.

  • To measure antioxidative activities, the various extracts from RVS (Rhus Verniciflua Stokes) were tried out with either DPPH or thiocyanate method. Also we used the GO (Glucose Oxidase) 20 mU/mL hydroxyl radical system in mouse whole brain cell culture. Chloroform, n-hexane or ethanol were used as extract solutions which had different polarity respectively. In DPPH and thiocyanate method, the antioxidative activities of the crude ethanol extracts were stronger than other extracts. The crude ethanol extracts were fractionated 5 peaks by glass column. Among of them, antioxidative activity of peak II $(P_{II})$ was shown stronger than other fractions, a little for peak III $(P_{III})$ and peak IV $(P_{IV})$, and none for peak I $(P_I)$ and Peak V $(P_V)$. In the antioxidative effects of crude ethanol extracts (30 mg/mL), cell viabilities were evaluated $1\;{\mu}L\;(297\;{\mu}g/mL)$, $2\;{\mu}L\;(588\;{\mu}g/mL)$ of crude ethanol extracts 59%, 68% respectively. $10\;{\mu}L\;(2,727\;{\mu}g/mL)$ addition of crude ethanol extracts had 95% cell viabilities, 0.01% significant, comparing control. In addition, the compounds related to antioxidative effect of crude ethanol extract might be glycoproteins by means of SDS-PAGE. Comparison to antioxidative effects between several antioxidants (ascorbic acid, ${\alpha}-tocopherol$, catalase) $273\;{\mu}L/mL$ addition of crude ethanol extracts corresponds to $1\;{\mu}g/mL$ catalase in antioxidative effects.

  • Ekongsan (EKS) was expected to have inhibitory effects on angiogenesis, considering the fact that its constituents such as Ginseng Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix and Citri Pericarpium were reported to inhibit angiogenesis. Moreover, recently several metabolites transformed by the human intestinal microflora were reported to enhance effectiveness compared to their crude drugs. Based on these data, this study was designed to confirm whether the EKS metabolites (EKS-M) can significantly exert the anti-angiogenic and anti-metastatic activites. Hence, with EKS and EKS-M, viability assay, proliferation assay, in vitro tube formation assay, gelatin zymogram assay, in vitro invasion assay were carried out. EKS showed less toxicity in ECV304 and HT1080 cells than EKS-M. EKS-M inhibited the proliferation of HT1080 cells by 30% at 200 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ and 42% at 400 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ respectively. Also, EKS-M degraded the tube network at 200 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$. EKS and EKS-M inhibited the expression of MMP-9 at 200 and 400 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$in HT1080 cells. EKS reduced the invasive activity of HT1080 cells through matrigel coated transfilter at the concentration of 200 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$ more effectively than EKS-M. These data suggest that EKS and EKS-M has anti-angiogenic and anti-metastatic activities.
