In this study, we want to detect bacteriocin production in purple nonsulfur bacteria. As a results, it was showed that bacteriocin produced between some strains of Rhodobacter capsulatus, Rhodobacter sphaeroides and Rhodocyclus gelatinosus. In particular, it was appeared that cell membrane-bound bacteriocin was also produced by Rhodobacter capsulatus ATCC 17016.
A purple non-sulfur photosynthetic bacteria which evolved molecular hydrogen efficiently from glucose in the presence of low concentration of NH4+ under light illuminated anaerobic condition was isolated from mud samples in Korea. This bacteria was identified on Rhodobacter sphaeroides KS 56 based on the morphological, cultural and physiological characteristics.

The purpose of this study was to determine the inhibitory effect of heavy metals [Cd(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II)] on the growth of Rhodobacter species (Rhodobacter blasticus, Rhodobacter sphaeroides, and Rhodobacter capsulatus) and their potential use for Cd(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) bioremoval from liquid media. The presence of toxic heavy metals prolonged the lag phase in growth and reduced biomass growth for all three Rhodobacter species at concentrations of Cd, Ni, and Zn above 10 mg/L. However, all three Rhodobacter species also had a relatively high specific growth rate against each toxic heavy metal stress test for concentrations below 20 mg/L and possessed a potential bioaccumulation ability. The removal efficiency by all strains was highest for Cd(II), followed by Ni(II), and lowest for Zn(II), with the removal efficiency of Cd(II) by Rhodobacter species being 66% or more. Among the three strains, R. blasticus showed a higher removal efficiency of Cd(II) and Ni(II) than R. capsulatus and R. sphaeroides. Results also suggest that the bio-removal processes of toxic heavy metal ions by Rhodobacter species involve both bioaccumulation (intracellular uptake) and biosorption (surface binding).
The optimum temperature and pH for growth and hydrogen evolution of the organism were observed at 30-35$^{\circ}C$, and around pH 7.0, respectively. The efficiency of various sugars and organic acids on hydrogen evolution as electron donors by the organism was examined. Among them, higher rates of hydrogen evolution were observed with sugars such as glucose or fructose and organic acids such as alate or pyruvate. From the result, it was evident that Rhodobacter sphaeroides KS56 had a great capacity of utilizing various kinds of reduced carbon compounds as electron donors.
A strain of non-sulfur photosynthetic bacteria possessing large amount of ubiquinone-10 in the cell mass, was isolated from waste water collected from the Nakdong River. It was identified as Rhodobacter sp. N-2 by a series of studies on its morphological. cultural and physiological characteristics. The organism appeared to got higher cell mass under circumstances of anaerobic growth conditions than under photosynthetic aerobic cultures. Biotin and thiamin and niacin could be used as good growth factors.
The symptoms such as weaken shape, partial and full death in nurse- and old- trees have been mostly caused by the occurrence of cavity. In general, the adaption of poly-urethane has been practised routinely in the way of treatment in cavity. However, the use of poly-urethane was not an effective, but it was related to pollution materials. Here, the experiment was conducted to identify the effects of the treatments of loess or micro-organisms for the alternatives of poly-urethane. The cavities which occurred in Zelkova serrata, Prunus yedoensis and Quercus myrsinaefolia were treated by poly-urethane, loess, mixtured loess and micro-organism (Rhadobacter), and mixtured loess and micro-organism (Rhodobacter + bacillus). As the results of this experiment, it was shown that the treatment of mixtured loess and micro-organism (Rhodobacter + bacillus) induced to develop greater callus formation in the cavity up to 97% in Zelkova serrata, up to 87% in Prunus yedoensis, and by 73% in Quercus myrsinaefolia than the treatment of poly-urethane. But the only loess and mixtured loess and micro-organism (Rhadobacter) was a similar or lower callus formation ratio than poly-urethane.
5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is a representative photosensitizer used in numerous fields including cancer diagnosis and treatment. In this study, experiments were conducted to optimize the growth of Rhodobacter sphaeroides and production of ALA through LED irradiation of various wavelengths, addition of organic acid precursors of ALA, and changes in glucose concentration. After 72 h cultivation, the 850 nm wavelength LED irradiated at the same light intensity as the incandescent lamp increased the growth of R. sphaeroides and the production of ALA about 1.5- and 1.8-fold as compared with the control, respectively (p <0.0001 and p <0.0001). As a result of culturing R. sphaeroides by irradiating an LED with a wavelength of 850 nm after adding organic acid to the final concentration of 5 mM in culture medium, the production of ALA was increased about 2.8-fold in medium supplemented with pyruvic acid compared with the control (p <0.0001). In addition, the growth of the strain and the production of ALA were increased about 2.9- and 3.4-fold in medium supplemented with 40 mM glucose compared to the control which added only 5 mM pyruvic acid, respectively (p <0.0001 and p <0.0001). The yield of ALA per cell dry mass was about 1.4 folds higher than that of the control in 20 and 40 mM glucose, respectively (p <0.001). In conclusion, the growth of R. sphaeroides and production of ALA were increased by 850 nm wavelength LED irradiation. It also optimized the growth of R. sphaeroides and production of ALA through organic acid addition and glucose concentration changes.
A species of facultative photo-organotrophic, purple, non-sulfur bacterium was isolated from the 47 point at west and south coast of Korea in September 2001. Separated 13 samples of changes with red color under 28-32$^{\circ}C$, 3000 lux, anaerobe conditions for 7 days cultivated in basal medium. For pure isolation from 13 samples, we used agar-shake tube method (0.4 % agar) and separated 5 strains through 13-repetition test. EGH-24 and EGH-30 was identified as the same strain through the RAPD(Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA)-PCR of strain EGH-9, EGH-13, EGH-23, EGH-24, EGH-30. Four isolates cultivated in synthesis wastewater for wastewater biodegradation test. EGH-24 was selected with efficient wastwater treating strain. Based on the results obtained from morphology, nutrient requirements, major bacteriochlorophyll content, 16S-rDNA phylogenetic analysis, EGH-24 strain may be identified as a new strain of the genus Rhodobacter and named Rhodobacter sp. EGH-24.
A green mutant of Rhodobacter sphaeroides 60I was acquired by chemical induction. The blue-shifted of the carotenoid absorption was found in the Light-harvesting complex II (LH2) of the mutant. With the excitation at different wavelength, we observed that the evolution of excited-state dynamics in LH2 of Rhodobacter sphaeroides 60I. The dynamical traces demonstrate a dominant absorption followed concomitantly by an ultrafast transmission increase and decay with 818nm excitation.
