  • Polymers in cosmetics are used to deliver desired attributes to skin and hair. Precisely constructed block and graft copolymers widen the range of available mechanical properties and compatibilities. Stimuli responsive hydrophobic polymers can be triggered to become hydrophilic by changes in their environment and this can confer waterproof properties at low temperature and easy water removal at higher temperatures. Transfer-resistant cosmetics can be possible due to silicone resins. The control of rheology properties in cosmetics gradually continue to be easy with copolymers. Durability of colors and fragrances for rinse-off products can be enhanced by delivery systems from complex coacervates. Polymeric anti-microbials promise product preservation while minimizing the concern of skin permeation. This article reviews recent trends in the use of polymers in cosmetics.

  • The effects of temperature on the rheological properties of the solutions of poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluopropylene) (PVDF-HFP) in dimethyl acetamide (DMAc) were investigated in terms of frequency and concentration. The effects of temperature on the intrinsic viscosity of the solutions were discussed. In dynamic rheological measurement, the concentrated solutions showed a little unexpected rheological response; as temperature was increased dynamic viscosity was increased and the solutions exhibited more noticeable Bingham body character over the temperature range, 30 to $70^{\circ}C$. In addition, the solution gave longer relaxation time, lower value of loss tangent and higher value of yield stress at higher temperature and at higher concentration. On the other hand, the dilute solutions revealed that intrinsic viscosity was decreased and its Huggins constant was increased with increasing temperature. These physical parameters suggested that the increase of viscosity with increasing temperature resulted from the localized gelation of PVDF-HFP due to reduced solubility to the solvent.

  • In this study, the anionic emulsified asphalt was prepared by dispersing asphalt particles evenly into water with combination of anionic and nonionic surfactants. Effects of NaOH and $CaCl_2$ on the phase stability of the emulsified asphalt were also investigated through zeta potential value and rheology behavior; the emulsified asphalt added with NaOH and $CaCl_2$ showed higher zeta potential value than that the asphalt with addition of only anionic and nonionic surfactants. In addition, with regard to shear thinning behaviors, it was found that pH of the emulsified anionic asphalt and $Ca^{2+}$, counter ion, affected the phase stability. SBR (styrene-butadiene-rubber) latex, EPD (water dispersed Epoxy), PU (polyurethane) and RI-10S, SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene)-based property improvement additive, were used and studied to enhance the adhesion properties with the aggregates. RI-10S, however, was found to be only compatible with the anionic emulsified asphalt; the coating rate, adhesion and compression strength were increased with the RI-10S content.

  • Soft materials, such as polymer solutions, gels and filamentous protein materials in cells, show complicated behavior due to their complex structures and dynamics with multiple characteristic time and length scales. Several complementary techniques have been developed to measure viscoelastic of soft materials. Especially, particle tracking microrheology, using the Brownian motion of particles in a medium to get rheological properties, has recently been improved both theoretically and experimentally. Compared to other conventional methods, video particle tracking microrheology has some advantages such as small sample volume, detecting spatial variation of local rheological properties, and less damage to sample materials. With these advantages, microrheology is more suitable to measure the properties of complex materials than other mechanical rheometries.

  • Extensional flow of viscoelastic fluids is widely utilized in various industrial processes such as electrospinning, 3D printing and plastic injection molding. Extensional rheological properties, such as apparent viscosity and relaxation time, play an important role in the design and evaluation of the viscoelastic fluid-involved processes. In this work, we propose a lab-built capillary breakup extensional rheometer (CaBER) based on flow image processing to investigate the capillary breakup of polyethylene oxide (PEO) solution and its extensional rheological properties. We found that the apparent extensional viscosity and extensional relaxation time of the PEO solution are independent of the strike time. The proposed CaBER is expected to be applied to characterization of the extensional rheological properties of viscoelastic fluids at low cost with high precision.
