Impedance Tuning and Matching Characteristics of UHF RFID Tag for Increased Reading Range (인식거리 향상을 위한 UHF 대역 RFID 태그 임피던스 정합 설계)

  • We investigated the impedance matching characteristics of UHF-band RFID tag antenna and tag chip for increased reading range. A voltage multiplier designed using 0.4 $\mu$m zero-$V_T$ MOSFET showed that DC output voltage of about 2 V can be obtained using standard CMOS process. The input impedance of the voltage multiplier was examined to achieve impedance matching to the RFID tag antenna using analytical and numerical approaches. The input impedance of the voltage multiplier could be varied in a wide range by selecting the size of MOSFET and the number of multiplying stages, and thus can be impedance matched to a tag antenna in presence of other tag circuit blocks. A meander line inductively-coupled RFID tag antenna operating at UHF band also shows the feasibility of impedance matching to tile RFID tag chip.

  • A tag collision arbitration algorithm for RFID passive tags is one of the important issues for fast tag identification, since reader and tag have a shared wireless channel in RFID system. This paper suggests Hyper-Hybrid Query Tree algorithm to prevent the tag-collisions. The suggested algorithms determine the specified point in time for tag to transfer ID to reader by using value 1 of the upper 3 bit based on Query Tree. Also, because the transferred upper 3 bits of tag is different depending on the time of transfer, it is possible to predict in the suggested Algorithm. In the performance evaluation through simulation, it shows the suggested algorithm has higher performance in the number of queries compared to other Tree-based protocols.

  • This study was conducted as a basic study for the selection of tags suitable for logistics management in the palletized unit-load unit and the development of various technologies to activate the palletized unit-load shipment of agricultural products through local APCs. Three types of passive RFID tags of UHF 900 MHz and one type of active RFID tag of 2.4 GHz band designed and manufactured through this study were used to analyze the receiving strength according to the tag's attachment location and distance of the palletized unit-load of agricultural products. In the passive RFID tag, there was a large difference in receiving strength by the tag's attachment location and a large amount of data loss depending on the distance within 30 m, whereas, in the active RFID tag, it was superior to the passive tags in terms of both receiving strength and data loss. Therefore, active tags are desirable from the perspective of multiple identification of warehouses with large spaces in relation to the application of RFID tags for palletized unit-loads of agricultural products, but the development of low-power technologies such as software wakeup power management as well as hardware to minimize battery power consumption is necessary.

  • In this paper, an adaptive RFID tag antenna in 900MHz for using in inadequate electromagnetic environment is designed and implemented. The dimension of the proposed passive tag is $102mm{\times}102mm{\times}9mm$, the operating frequency band is 908~914MHz and the detection range is 5.1m. This paper describes the development of the thermal, water and impact resisting tag. The implemented tag can be used for the inadequate environment such as in-built tag on the ground for the car management service.

An Efficient Tag Identification Algorithm Using Improved Time Slot Method (개선된 타임 슬롯 방법을 이용한 효과적인 태그 인식 알고리즘)

  • In recent year, the cores of ubiquitous environment are sensor networks and RFID systems. RFID system transmits the electronic information of the tag to the reader by using RF signal. Collision happens in RFID system when there are many matched tags, and it degrades the tag identification performance. Such a system needs algorithm which is able to arbitrate tag collision. This paper suggests a hybrid method which reduces collision between the tags, and can quickly identify the tag. The proposed method operates based on certainty, which takes an advantage of tree based algorithm, and to reduce collision it selects transmission time slot by using tag ID. The simulation results show the suggested method has higher performance in the number of queries and collision compared to other tree based and hybrid algorithms.

  • A wearable embroidery 'ㅂ' character shape UHF RFID tag antenna has been designed using conductive electro-thread. After testing characteristics of various electro-threads, the embroidery tag, with a T-matching structure, has been designed on a cloth with 200D(denier) electro-thread which performs electrically better. The embroidery tag on a piece of fabric or clothes made with the flexible electro-thread is a wearable tag and possible to be recognized by an RFID system. The conductivity of different deniers of electro-threads has been measured. The measured conductivity has been used for simulation and fabrication to have accurate simulation results. To verify the characteristics of the tag antenna, the return loss and reading range of the fabricated embroidery electro-thread UHF RFID tag antenna have been tested. The reading range is approximately 1.52 m.

  • This paper presents the implementation of RFID EPC global network educational system based on using 900MHz air interface between the reader and the active tag. The software of reader and the active tag is developed on embedded environment, and the software of PC controlling the reader is based on window OS operated as the server. The ATmega128 VLSI chip is used for the processor of the reader and the active tag. As the development environment, AVR compiler is used for the reader and the active tag of which the programming language is C. The visual C++language of the visual studio on the PC activated as the server is used for development language. Main functions of this system are to control tag containing EPC global Data by PC through the reader, to obtain information of tag through the internet and to read/write data on tag memory. Finally the data written from the active tag's memory is sent to the PC via the reader as "read" operation and compare the received data with one already sent to the tag. Software implementation of 900MHz EPC global RFID educational system is done on the basis of these functions.

  • Current traffic guidance system offers the information of traffic light using a speaker to everybody including the blinds without object certification. Therefore, the current system gives stress by noisy sound to normal person. It is difficult for the blind to hear informations such as location, current traffic sign light status, and weather information, because of the vehicle noise and surroundings noise. If the blind or sight disabled person who has the RFID tag or has a white stick with RFID tag approaches to street crossing, RFID reader recognizes the tag and it serves necessary information through speaker or bluetooth. And also it is possible for the blind to use less expensive one with RFID tag than the white stick with RFID Reader.

A Study on the Long Range RFID Tag in the UHF Band (UHF 대역 장거리용 RFID 태그에 관한 연구)

  • RFID technologies, which allow collecting, storing, processing, and tracking information by wirelessly recognizing the inherent ID of object through an attached electronic tag, have a variety of application areas. One of the important parameters in designing such RFID systems is the read range within which the system recognizes the electronic tag. We present a novel method of designing an RFID tag required for long read range of RFID systems. The tag designed by the proposed method is battery-assisted to increase its forward-link read range and simultaneously, has backscattering modulation amplified to increase its reverse-link read range. We experimentally confirm that the minimum threshold power of the tag is - 23 dBm and the backscattering modulation gain is 28 dB, which is consistent with our simulation results. We also verify that the tag in this paper improves more than 2 times in terms of the read range compared to the existing commercial tags.

Improvement of Tag Collection Performance for Active RFID Systems (능동형 RFID 시스템을 위한 태그 수집 성능 개선)

  • Tag collection is one of the major functions in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems. IS0/IEC 18000-7 defines the tag collection algorithm using the anti-collision algorithm, based on the framed slotted ALOHA for active RFID systems. However, it has inefficiency problems that reduce tag collection performance by deciding non-optimum slot size or using point-to-point commands to put collected tags to sleep. In this paper, we propose two mechanisms to overcome the inefficiency problems and improve tag collection performance: 1) a new slot size decision mechanism to allow the reader to choose the optimum slot size flexibly and 2) a broadcast-based sleep mechanism to put collected tags to sleep effectively. We also implemented an active RFID system, composed of an active RFID reader and multiple tags, and the reader is designed to maximize tag collection performance when the proposed mechanisms are applied. In experiments, we evaluated the tag collection performance using one reader and 50 tags in the real-world environment. The experimental results show that when two mechanisms are applied and the initial number of slots is chosen appropriately, the performance of the proposed tag collection algorithm is greatly enhanced, compared with that of the standard.
