  • A numerical study to investigate the effect of intake vortex occurrence on the performance of an axial hydraulic turbine for generating tidal power energy in Sihwa-lake tidal power plant, Korea, is performed. Numerical analysis of the flow through an sxial hydraulic turbine is carried out by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes dquations with the shear stress transport turbulence model. In the real turbine operation, the vortex flows are occurred in both the side corners around the intake of an axial hydraulic turbine due to the interaction between the inflow angle of water and intake structure. To analyze these vortex phenomena and to evaluate their impacts on the turbine performance, the internal flow fields of the axial hydraulic turbines with the different inflow angles are compared with their performances. As the results of numerical analysis, the vortex flows do not directly affect the turbine performance.

  • The incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved to predict the aerodynamic characteristics of an airship hull. The concept of pseudo-compressibility is employed to couple the pressure field with the velocity field. The upwind differencing method for spatial discretization and a line relaxation scheme for time integration are used. The flowfield around the low drag airship hull of fineness ratio 4 is solved for two Reynolds numbers with a wide range of angle of attack. The effect of Reynolds number and transition position is briefly examined together with the change in aerodynamic coefficients due to a gondola attached to the hull, and the results will be used as basic data for the design of a low drag airship hull.

  • An iterative time marching procedure for solving incompressible turbulent flow has been applied to the flows around a high speed train including cross-wind effects. This procedure solves three-dimensional unsteady incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations on a non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system using first-order accurate schemes for the time derivatives and third/second-order accurate schemes for the spatial derivatives. Turbulent flows have been modeled by Baldwin-Lomax turbulent model. To validate present procedure, the flow around a high speed train at zero yaw angle was simulated and compared with experimental data. Generally good agreement with experiments was achieved. The flow fields around the high speed train at 9.2°, 16.7°, and 45° of yaw angle were also simulated.

  • This paper investigates the convergence characteristics of the modified artificial compressibility method proposed by Turkel. In particular, a focus is mode on the convergence characteristics due to variation of the preconditioning factor (${\alpha}_u$) and the artificial compressibility (${\beta}$) in conjunction with an upwind method. For the investigations, a code using the modified artificial compressibility is developed. The code solves the axisymmetric incompressible Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The cell-centered finite volume method is used in conjunction with Roe's approximate Riemann solver for the inviscid flux, and the central difference discretization is used for the viscous flux. Time marching is accomplished by the approximated factorization-alternate direction implicit method. In addition, Menter's k-${\omega}$ shear stress transport turbulence model is adopted for analysis of turbulent flows. Inviscid, laminar, and turbulent flows are solved to investigate the accuracy of solutions and convergence behavior in the modified artificial compressibility method. The possible reason for loss of robustness of the modified artificial compressibility method with ${\alpha}_u$ >1.0 is given.

제시된 모형을 Nezu and Onitsuka (2001)의 실험수로에 적용하여 모의된 결과를 실험 계측자료 및 Kang and Choi (2006)의 Reynolds stress model 모의결과와 비교하였다.

  • Differential pressure Venturi cone flowmeter is an advanced flowmeter which has many advantages such as wide range of measurement, high accuracy, excellent flow turndown ratio, low headless, and short installation pipe length requirement, etc. Like other differential pressure flowmeter, Venturi cone flowmeter uses the law of energy conservation, but its shape and position make it perform better than others. The cone acts as its own flow conditioner and mixer, fully conditioning and mixing the flow prior to measurement. For the analysis, we use Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model. The equations are fully trans-formed in the computational coordinates, the pressure-velocity coupling is made through SIMPLER algorithm, and the equations are discretized using analytic solutions of the linearized equations(Finite Analytic Method). At the end of the paper, using the result of analysis, We propose a new shape of cone with the hope of drag reduction and high performance.

  • A computational study of vortex-induced transverse vibrations of a cylinder with low mass-damping is presented. An Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation of the Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations (URANS), along with the Spalart-Allmaras (SA) one-equation turbulence model, are coupled conservatively with rigid body motion equations of the cylinder mounted on elastic supports in order to study the amplitude and frequency response of a freely vibrating cylinder, its flow-induced motion, Vortex Street, near-wake flow structure, and unsteady loading in a moderate range of Reynolds numbers. The time accurate response of the cylinder from rest to its limit cycle is studied to explore the effects of Reynolds number on the start of large displacements, motion amplitude, and frequency. The computational results are compared with published physical experiments and numerical studies. The maximum amplitudes of displacements computed for various Reynolds numbers are smaller than the experimental values; however, the overall agreement of the results is quite satisfactory, and the upper branch of the limit-cycle displacement amplitude vs. reduced velocity response is captured, a feature that was missed by other studies. Vortex shedding modes, lock-in phenomena, frequency response, and phase angles are also in agreement with experiments.

  • Exergetic analysis was introduced in optimization of a rotating equilateral triangular internal cooling channel with staggered square ribs to maximize the net exergy gain. The objective function was defined as the net exergy gain considering the exergy gain by heat transfer and exergy losses by friction and heat transfer process. The flow field and heat transfer in the channel were analysed using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations under the uniform temperature condition. Shear stress transport turbulence model has been selected as a turbulence closure through the turbulence model test. Computational results for the area-averaged Nusselt number were validated compared to the experimental data. Three design variables, i.e., the angle of rib, the rib pitch-to-hydraulic diameter ratio and the rib width-to-hydraulic diameter ratio, were selected for the optimization. The optimization was performed at Reynolds number, 20,000. Twenty-two design points were selected by Latin hypercube sampling, and the values of the objective function were evaluated by the RANS analysis at these points. Through optimization, the objective function value was improved by 22.6% compared to that of the reference geometry. Effects of the Reynolds number, rotation number, and buoyancy parameter on the heat transfer performance of the optimum design were also discussed.

  • A series of simulations were carried out to test the accuracy of a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) model for flow and dispersion problems around buildings. The basic equations involved are Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Two different cases were selected to estimate the accuracy of a CFD model. Case 1 adopted Euler equations, which are obtained by neglecting the viscous fluxes, which can be closed by the $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$model for a turbulent close problem. The results of both cases were compared with wind tunnel data. The results for Case 2 were closer to the wind both cases were compared with wind tunnel data. The results for Case 2 were closer to the wind tunnel data than Case 1. Accordingly, this indicates that the inclusion of viscous fluxes in a CFD model is required for the simulation of flow and 야spersion around buildings.

  • The computational fluid dynamic analysis has been conducted for the thermo-chemical flow field in an arcjet thruster with mono-propellant Hydrazine (N2H4) as a working fluid. The Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are modified to analyze compressible flows with the thermal radiation and electric field. The Maxwell equation, which is loosely coupled with the fluid dynamic equations through the Ohm heating and Lorentz forces, is adopted to analyze the electric field induced by the electric arc. The chemical reactions of Hydrazine were assumed to be infinitely fast due to the high temperature field inside the arcjet thruster. The chemical and the thermal radiation models for the nitrogen-hydrogen mixture and optically thick media respectively, were incorporated with the fluid dynamic equations. The results show that performance indices of the arcjet thruster with 1kW arc heating are improved by amount of 180% in thrust and 200% in specific impulse more than frozen flow. In addition to thermo-physical process inside the arcjet thruster is understood from the flow field results.
