In the present work, numerical analyses of air flow in HVAC duct have been carried out for enhancement of cooling/heating performance. For the analyses, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved with the shear stress transport turbulence model. The numerical results were validated in comparison with the experimental data. Based on the numerical results, the HVAC duct was designed to reduce the pressure loss. The modified duct geometry shows largely reduced pressure drop in comparison with the reference geometry. And, through modified duct shape, the performance of air conditioning has been enhanced.
Recently, with increasing container ships' volume continuously, the conceptual design "Smart Harbor" of newly logistics processing system has been suggested. It is necessary to estimate resistance and horsepower for the selection of an appropriate propulsor at the initial design stage of Smart Harbor. In this study, CFD and the circulating water channel of the University of Ulsan are employed for estimating the resistance of the Smart Harbor Crane Ship with 1/100 scaled model. Two turbulent models are used. One is realizable k-${\varepsilon}$and the other is Reynolds stress turbulence model. In addition, the effects of the change in y+ and the number of meshes are considered during analysing.

In the present study, squeezing flow of micropolar nanofluid between parallel infinite disks in the presence of magnetic field perpendicular to plane of the disks is taken into account. The constitutive equations that govern the flow configuration are converted into nonlinear ordinary differential with the help of suitable similarity transforms. HAM package BVPh2.0 has been employed to solve the nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations. Effects of different emerging parameters like micropolar parameter K, squeezed Reynolds number R, Hartmann number M, Brownian motion parameter Nb, thermophoresis parameter Nt, Lewis number Le for dimensionless velocities, temperature distribution and concentration profile are also discussed graphically. In the presence of strong and weak interaction (i.e. n = 0 and n = 0.5), numerical values of skin friction coefficient, wall stress coefficient, local Nusselt number and local Sherwood number are presented in tabulated form. To check the validity and reliability of the developed algorithm BVPh2.0 a numerical investigation is also a part of this study.
The paper reports the outcome of a numerical study of flow over idealized L-shaped ribleted surfaces with two-equation turbulence models. In the present study, the Launder and Sharma's k-.epsilon. turbulence model (LS model) is basically N employed, but with a little modification of the additional .epsilon.-source term without affecting its level under 2-dimensional straining in which the term has been calibrated. Compared to the original LS model, the present model has predicted greatly improved drag reduction behavior for this geometry. As a drag reduction mechanism, it is found that the skin-friction in the riblet valleys might be sufficient to overcome the skin-friction increase near the riblet tip. The present predicted results are in good agreement with the recent DN S ones by Choi et al. (1993): differences in the mean velocity prof ile and turbulence quantities are found to be limited to the riblet cavity region. It is also found that turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress above the riblets are also reduced in drag-reducing configurations.
This study investigated mainly on the flow characteristics of a droplet in the cross region of twin spray. The velocities of the droplet were measured along the axial and radial direction, and the flow characteristics of the droplet were statistically analyzed. For the statistical analysis, the probability density of the turbulent components has been studied, and then the Reynolds shear stress, the skewness and the flatness factors were calculated, and compared with the Gaussian value. Two pressure swirl stomizers were used for the twin spray system and kerosene was employed as the working liquid. 2-D PDA(particle dynamic analyzer) was used for the purpose of the measurement of droplet size and velocities. As a result, it was found that (1) the droplets collision was taken place strongly in the cross region. So, a large momentum loss of droplets due to the loss of natural movement direction was occurred, and momentum loss of radial direction was greater than that of axial direction. (2) The axial direction skewness factor approached to zero like the Gaussian distribution in the cross region of twin spray. (3) In the cross region of twin spray, the fluctuation instability of droplet was increased because of the development of the turbulence characteristics due to the droplet collision.
Recently, the manufacturing of micro-cavity by means of laser surface texturing (LST) technique and low friction study by the LST have been in great progress. Most of current works have been dealing with the effect of cavity on friction and wear. The main objective of the present study was to investigate numerically two-dimensional lubrication characteristics of micro-dimple shapes fabricated on solid surfaces, and this study utilized the commercial CFD code (Fluent V.6.3). For the evaluation, preliminary simulation was conducted and numerical predictions were compared with the analytic solution obtained from the Reynolds's equation. Mainly, the present study investigated the influence of dimple depth, pattern shapes, and film thickness on lubrication characteristics related to the reduction of friction. It is found that the existence of micro-dimpled surface makes it possible to substantially reduce the friction forces exerted on the surfaces. In particular, substantial decrease in shear stresses was observed as the lubricant film thickness decreases. For instance, in the case of the film thickness of 0.01 mm, the estimated shear stress decreases up to about 40%. It indicates that the film thickness would be important factor in designing the micro-dimpled surfaces. Furthermore, it was observed that such a optimum dimple depth would be present because the dimple depth larger than the optimum value did no longer affect the reduction in shear stresses.

Nowadays, computational fluid dynamics is commonly used by design engineers to evaluate and compare losses in hydraulic components as it is less expensive and less time consuming than model tests. For that purpose, an automatic tool for casing and distributor analysis will be presented in this paper. An in-house mesh generator and a Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation solver using the standard $k-{\omega}$ shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model will be used to perform all computations. Two solvers based on the C++ OpenFOAM library will be used and compared to a commercial solver. The performance of the new fully coupled block solver developed by the University of Lucerne and Andritz will be compared to the standard 1.6ext segregated simpleFoam solver and to a commercial solver. In this study, relative comparisons of different geometries of casing and distributor will be performed. The present study is thus aimed at validating the block solver and the tool chain and providing design engineers with a faster and more reliable analysis tool that can be integrated into their design process.
A numerical procedure for optimizing the shape of three-dimensional channel with V-shaped ribs extruded on both walls has been carried out to enhance the turbulent heat transfer. The response surface based optimization is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-stoked analysis. Shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for average heat transfer rate show good agreements with experimental data. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer and friction loss-related terms with a weighting factor. Three dimensionless variables such as, rib pitch-to-rib height ratio, rib height-to-channel height ratio, and the attack angle of the rib are chosen as design variables. Nineteen training points obtained by D-optimal designs for three design variables construct a reliable response surface. In the sensitivity analysis, it is found that the objective function is most sensitive to the ratio of rib height-to-channel height ratio. And, optimal values of design variables have been obtained in a range of the weighting factor.
In this work, a preliminary design of an inlet guide vane and runner for developing a 2.5 kW hydraulic turbine was conducted by using computational fluid dynamic analysis. Three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress transport turbulence model were used to analyze the fluid flow in the hydraulic turbine. The hexahedral grid system was used to construct computational domain, and the grid dependency test was performed to obtain the optimal grid system. Velocity triangle diagram considering the flow angles of the inlet guide vane and runner was analyzed to obtain a basic geometry of the inlet guide vane and runner. Through modification of the preliminary design, the hydraulic performances of the turbine have improved under overall drop conditions. Especially, the efficiency and power of the turbine increased by 0.95% and 1.45%, respectively, compared to those of the reference model.
In this study, we investigate the wake characteristics in two cases which are laminar inflow and turbulent inflow. To solve the flow with wind turbines and its wake, we use large eddy simulation (LES) technique with actuator line method (ALM) and turbulent inflow of Turbsim. Turbulent inflow which contains the characteristic of the stable atmospheric boundary layer is used. We perform the quantitative analysis of velocity deficit and turbulence intensity in two cases. Time series of velocity deficit at the first, the second column in two cases are compared to observe the performance of wind turbine. The performance in the first column in laminar inflow is overestimated compared to that in turbulent inflow. And we observe that wake in the case with turbulent inflow drive to the span-wise direction and wake recovery in turbulent inflow is more effective. In quadrant analysis of Reynolds stress, the ejection and the sweep motion in turbulent inflow case are bigger than those in laminar inflow case.
