This research proposes a conceptual framework to highlight the importance of change management after firms implement ERP systems. With ERP, firms need to rework their business processes to make information flow smoothly within organizations. Firms cannot realize expected returns from ERP investments unless changes are effectively managed after ERP systems are put into operation. The research model is empirically tested using data collected from over 170 firms that had used ERP systems at least for more than one year. Our analysis reveals that the eventual success of ERP systems depends on effective change management after ERP implementation, supporting the existence of the 'valley of despair.

Design is an act based on multidisciplinary information. The involvement of various stakeholders makes it difficult to process, plan, and integrate. Iteration is frequent in most of the engineering design and development projects including construction. Design iterations cause rework, and extra efforts are required to get the optimal sequence and to manage the projects. The simple project management techniques are insufficient to fulfill the requirements of integrated design. This paper entails two things: design structure matrix and design parameters' information based model. The emphasis has been given to optimal sequence and crucial iteration using design structure matrix analysis technique. The design projects have been studied using survey data from industry. The optimal sequence and crucial iterations results have been utilized for proposed model. Model integrates two things: information about produced- required key design parameters and information of design changes during the design process. It will help to get familiar with Design management in order to fulfill contemporary needs.

In 2008 the total estimated failure costs in the Netherlands was estimated to be 11.4% of the industry's turnover compared to 7.7% seven years earlier. Failure costs can be the consequence of rework as a result of failure to conform to the product requirements and specifications or due to inefficient processes and bad management practices. Many construction companies however are unaware of the exact nature of these costs, their root causes or how to control them. This paper describes work carried out in the Netherlands to identify the different types of failure costs in construction and their root causes. The research described builds on previous findings by another research institution and expands it to include information collected from project cases and a survey of a number of project managers in the construction industry. The paper describes the analysis of the results from cases and the survey to identify the root causes of failure costs. Research shows, for example, that many failure costs are related to the client taking late decisions and making changes to the project requirements.

Construction errors can have significant effects on project performance. Yet, any attempt to tackle error should be driven by the ability to understand its archetypal nature. This study aims to analyze a variety of construction errors at the execution stage, in order to develop a comprehensive set of categories that shall provide insights about the effect of different error types on the industry. We investigate a database provided by an authoritative source, which includes a number of 256 construction errors that occurred in the year 2009 in Dubai construction industry. Results from this study reveal that the most common error arose from 'poor workmanship' which accounted for 21% of the total encountered faults. The next most common types arose from the 'usage of impaired materials', followed by the 'deviation from an intended dimension'. These observations infer that the majority of construction errors are driven by workers' lack of skill or competence. Moreover, it suggests that execution-oriented errors are the major cause of faults and accidents rather than design errors.

Depending upon the method of the surface generation and the quality of the boundary curves provided, the resulting surfaces may have global or local irregularities in many cases. Thus it would be necessary for the designer to evaluate the surface quality and to modify the surface. This capability is very important because the defect of the surface requires the rework of the dies that causes a big loss in cost and delivery time. To simulate the reflection line test in the actual production line, a faster generation algorithm is presented. Among., various surface interrogation methods using reflection lines, Blinn-Newell type of reflection mapping is applied to generate reflection lines on the trimmed NURBS surface. The generation of reflection lines is formulated as a surface-plane intersection problem, and solved by surface-contouring techniques. In addition, a modified reflection map is proposed to eliminate the discontinuity of reflection lines due to the configuration of the reflection map. A fast reflection line algorithm is developed utilizing an efficient traced contouring technique, and proved to be well suited for real-time quality-assessment task.

Configuration is a set of building block processes, a series of selection and combining parts or components which composes a whole thing. A whole thing could be such a configurable object as manufacturing product, network system, financial portfolio, system development plan, project team, etc. Configuration problem could happen during any phase of product life cycle: design, production, sales, installation, and maintenance. Configuration has long been one of cost and time consuming work, because only high salaried technical experts on product and components can do configuration. Rework for error adjustments of configurations at later process causes far much cost and time, so accurate configuration is required. Under the on-line electronic commerce environment, configuration problem solving becomes more important, because component-based sales should be done automatically on the merchant web site. Automated product search, order placement, order fulfillment and payment make that manual configuration is no longer feasible. Automated configuration means that all the constraints among components should be checked and confirmed by configuration engine automatically. In addition, technical constraints and customer preferences like price range and a specific function required should be considered. This paper gives an brief overview of configuration problems: characteristics, representation paradigms, and solving algorithms and introduce CRSP(Constraint and Rule Satisfaction Problem) method. CRSP method adopts both constraint and rule for configuration domain knowledge representation. A survey and analysis on web sites adopting configuration functions are provided. Future directions of configuration for EC is discussed in the three aspects: methodology itself, companies adopting configuration function, and electronic commerce industry.

The BGA package has been the area array package of choice for several years. Recently, the transition has been to finer pitch configurations called Chip Scale Packages (CSP). Several of these package types are available at 0.5 mm pitch. requiring surface mount assemblers to evaluate and optimize various elements of the assembly process. This presentation describes the issues associated with making the transition from BGA to CSP assembly. Areas addressed will include the accuracy of pick and place equipment, printed wiring board lines and spaces, PWB vias, in-circuit test issues, solder paste printing, moisture related factors, rework and reliability. The transition to 0.5 mm pitch requires careful evaluation of the board design, solder paste selection, stencil design and component placement accuracy. At this pitch, ball and board pad diameters can be as small as 0.25 mm and 0.20 mm respectively. Drilled interstitial vias are no longer possible and higher ball count packages require micro-via board technology. The transition to CSP requires careful evaluation of these issues. Normal paste registration and BGA component tolerances can no longer achieve the required process levels and higher accuracy pick and place machines need to be implemented. This presentation will examine the optimization of these critical assembly operations, contrast the challenges at 0.5 mm and also look at the continuation of the process to incorporate smaller pitch flip chip devices.

All infrastructure projects are said to be inter-dependent, uncertain and labour-intensive in nature. There is no exception for building services sub sector. For a real time project such as 'The construction, extension and refurbishment of Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Hospital at Tirupathy, India with total area of 45,000 square feet at an estimated cost of 1100 million rupees, a generic process model is developed to simulate the effect of set of identified variables on construction project. The 'Stocks and Flows' of dynamic model affords relevant insights to project managers, who apply this knowledge when designing better performance through more appropriate project planning. It is concluded from the model-based approach that building services works can be improved through specific better focussed managerial efforts, such as an increasing coordination effectiveness at the planning stage, clarifying prerequisite conditions prior to installations. Otherwise, pending works arising from work clashes can lead to knock-on effects resulting in productivity constraints and pressures, as well as more rework and demolition. Current study reveals that the model enables deep insight into various interdependent processes, their by improving construction performance levels, by addressing the dynamics of design errors and defective works, and recovering delayed schedule.
The extremely strong competition among the world automobile industries has introduced the concept of PLM in the total production activities, one of whose major components is VM(Virtual Manufacturing). If the production lines are equipped with robots, the application of OLP in the virtual space is fully mature. However, in the point of the investment's and the maintenance's view, there are always some activities, which can not be automated: for example, typically the manual welding for prefixing in the automobile body shop and the material loading. Process planning for these activities, therefore, are decided mainly by experiences, which caused many repeated rework of the processes and the inconvenience of the workers, and resulted consequently in the reduction of the productivity and the safety of the workers. In this paper, the optimal dimension of the welding gun and its handle position and the optimal working path is simulated and decided by use of DELIMN/IGRIP and DELMIA/Ergo and the working area modelized in the virtual workcell of DELMIA.
