  • In this paper, we consider the acquisition performance of an IS-95 reverse link access channel slot as a function of system design parameters such as postdetection integration length and the number of access channel message block repetitons. The uncertainty region of the reverse link spreading codes compared to that of forward link is very small, since the uncertainty region of the reverse link is determined by a cell radius. Thus, the parallel acquisiton technique in the reverse link is more efficient than a serial acquisition technique in terms of implementation and of acquisition time. The parallel acquisition is achieved by a bank of N parallel I/Q noncoherent correlator are analyzed for band-limited noise and the Rayleigh fast fading channel. The detection probability is derived for multiple correct code-phase offsets and multipath fading. The probability of no message error is derived when rake combining, access channel message block combining, and Viterbi decoding are applied. Numerical results provide the acquisition performance for system design parameters such as postdetection integration length and number of access channel message block repetitions in case of a random access on a mobile station.

  • The demands for mobile communication service are growing rapidly. In heavily populated areas, cell split is unavoidable to increase the capacity of the cellular system. Cell splitting makes a cellular system to have mixed cell sizes. For cell planning, it is necessary to analyze the reverse link capacity of a CDMA cellular system with mixed cell sizes. In this paper, we propose a method to calculate the reverse link capacity of a CDMA cellular system with mixed cell sizes. When a macro cell is split into three micro cells, as an example, we calculate the reverse link capacities for the three micro cells and the neighboring macro cells. The results show that as the radius of a micro cell decreases, the reverse link capacity of the micro cell increases, while those of the neighboring macro cells decrease.

  • In this paper, effects of soft handoff region on the reverse link capacity of a DS-CDMA cellular system are investigated. The reverse link capacity of a CDMA cellular system is calculated at a given soft handoff region ratio (SHRR) and path loss model. The results show that the reverse link capacity increases by 1 ∼ 4 channels according to the soft handoff region ratio and the path loss model. However, in the case of the path loss model having a large attenuation exponent ($\mu$ = 5) and a small shadowing standard deviation ( $\sigma$ = 6 dB), the reverse link capacity is no more increased by increasing SHRR.

  • There are some transmission types on the reverse link of wideband DS-CDMA cellular system. The configurations of logical channels on the reverse link may be different dependent upon the transmission methods of reverse pilot or control signaling. In this paper, we present three transmission types on the wideband DS-CDMA reverse link; no-pilot system, pilot-channel aided system and pilot-symbol aided system. And we compare the performance of three systems in terms of capacity and cell coverage. The pilot-symbol aided system is shown to have the better performance than the pilot-channel aided system in both capacity and cell coverage.

  • In Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access(DS/CDMA) communication systems, it is important to contraol the power of reverse link channel evenly for overall channel capacity. To control the reverse link powers efficiently, it is necessary to estimate signal quality of each reverse link channel. In this paper, we discuss a method to estimate the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) for each channel by measuring the powers of pilot and noises. Computer simulations are done to show the effectiveness of the scheme.

  • In this paper, the reverse link performance evaluation with synchronous CDMA is analyzed in the PCS system, which is the schem based on proposed method of KMT-PCS to increase the capacitance of cellular CDMA system. We make the baseband system model of CDMA reverse link, and then analyze system performance and subsystem techniques considering effect of channel and power control that are improtant factor influencing system performance in the PCS system. Based on this result, the paper presents primary technique analyses required at synchronous reverse link proposed by the KMT, which compose of initial synchronization range in initial synchronization step and control signal period in the synchronization maintenance step.

  • Recently UHF RFID system has drawn a great deal of attention because of its potential to revolutionize supply chain management. An important characterization of the performance of a RFID system is 'interrogation range', which is defined as the maximum distance between a reader and a tag. Forward-link interrogation range is defined as the maximum distance from which the tag receives just enough power to turn on and back-scatter, and reverse-tink interrogation range is the maximum distance from which the reader can detect this back-scattered signal. A link balance has to be found between the two interrogation ranges. In this paper, the interrogation range equations are formulated in both forward-link and reverse-link and a trade-off between the two values is investigated in order to maximize the interrogation range. As a result, it is observed that the gain of the reader antenna, the isolation of the circulator, and the phase noise of the local oscillator with range correlation effect mainly determine the reverse-link interrogation range.

  • In this paper, link-level performance of a OFDMA technique, which has been considered as a standard for 802.16, 802.20, 3G-LTE, WiMax, and WiBro, is evaluated for next-generation wireless communication systems. While many researches have focused on uncoded forward-link performances, this paper provides a coded performance of a reverse-link OFDMA system. Performance degradation due to time offset among reverse-link users and frequency offset during FFT process is investigated. Transmitter and receiver antenna diversity techniques are used to overcome performance degradation. Performance of a OFDMA system is compared with a CDMA system in terms of FER and throughput to emphasize the advantage of OFDMA system for a reverse-link. Finally, under given specification, Eb/No required to achieve the maximum throughput of a reverse-link is proposed considering various coded rates and antenna permutations.

  • In this paper, we analyse feasibility of Zone-based Power Control (ZPC) scheme introduced for CDMA forward link(1) in the reverse link. To operate ZPC scheme in the CDMA systems the maximum power level that can be allocated to each traffic channel should be determined. Because all the service channels share the whole power resource in the forward lint a specific mechanism that determines Maximum power resource to each traffic channel is required to operate ZPC scheme in the forward link. However, ZPC scheme can be easily adopted to the reverse link, because of the fact that the whole power resource of service terminal is only confined to its traffic channel. In other words, we need not to determine the maximum power resource to be allocated in the reverse traffic channel. Simulation results show that ZPC scheme adopted to the reverse link yields a significant performance improvement compared with the conventional TPC(IS-95 TPC) scheme in terms of the power consumption and the traffic capacity of Portables, especially with the increasing number of high-rate data traffics. With the proposed scheme, not only be extended the service coverage of high-rate data traffic to the entire cell service coverage, but also the QoS of low-rate traffic can keep going through the service time, especially, in the situation that the incoming interference is much larger.

  • The reverse link of a spectrally overlaid macrocell/microcell cellular CDMA system supporting multimedia traffic is characterized in terms of the required signal power, interference, and capacity. Several narrowband subsystems are overlaid with a wideband subsystem in macrocells, while a single wideband subsystem is operated in a microcell with the same spectrum as the macrocell wideband subsystem. Using a typical propagation model the reverse link signal power and interference are characterized as the relative user signal power and the cross-tier interference factors between the macrocell and the microcell. The reverse link capacity of the overlay system is then analyzed. Analytical results show that the dominant parameters affecting the system performance are the spectral overlay ratio and the distance between the microcell and macrocell base stations. In particular, when the distance equals a half of macrocell radius, optimum performance can be achieved by minimizing the cross-tier interference factors. These results can be applied to CDMA multimedia network planning in heavily populated traffic areas.
