  • The potential for enhancing myocardial protection by adding high-energy phosphate to cardioplegic solutions [St. Thomas Hospital solution] was investigated in a rat heart model of cardiopulmonary bypass and ischemic arrest. Creatine phosphate was evaluated as an additive to the St. Thomas Hospital cardioplegic solution. Creatine phosphate 10.0 mmol/L as the optimal concentration which improved recovery of aortic flow and cardiac output after a 30 minute period of normothermic [37oC] ischemic arrest. In comparing mechanical function in both groups the mean postischemic recoveries of aortic flow, cardiac output, stroke volume and stroke work [expressed as a percentage of its preischemic control] were significantly greater in STH-CP group than in CP- free control group. In addition to improving function and decreasing CK release, CP reduced reperfusion arrhythmias significantly decreasing the time between cross-clamp removal and return to regular rhythm from 81.8 * 13.9 [sec] in CP-free group to 35.9 * 6.8 [sec] in CP group [P< 0.05] so, exogenous CP exerts potent protective and antiarrhythmic effects when added to the St. Thomas Hospital cardioplegic solution. However, the mechanism of action remains to be elucidated.

  • This work is concerned with an optimal selling rule for a large position of stock in a market. Selling a large block of stock in a short period typically depresses the market, which would result in a poor filling price. In addition, the large selling intensity makes the regime more likely to be poor state in the market. In this paper, regime switching and depressing terms associated with selling intensity are considered on a set of geometric Brownian models to capture movements of underlying asset. We also consider the liquidation strategy to sell much smaller number of shares in a long period. The goal is to maximize the overall return under state constraints. The corresponding value function with the selling strategy is shown to be a unique viscosity solution to the associated HJB equations. Optimal liquidation rules are characterized by a finite difference method. A numerical example is given to illustrate the result.

  • The key competition factor of manufacturing industries has progressively changed from cost to quality and time. Recently, the manufacturing environments more rapidly change than before. So, many companies want to introduce a advanced manufacturing system like CIMS to meet various user's needs and short delivery. But there is a considerable gap between the decision to invest and the achievement of promised benefits. Managers, generally, cannot afford CIM invesment unless they can determine beforehand that CIM will work in thier company and that will provide a coherent strategy and satisfactory return on investment In many cases, it is impossible to justify CIM investment by only economical analysis. Decision making problems like CIM investment are of a multiple objective nature. So, decision making process and multiattribute utility function are very useful methods to evaluate CIM justification In this paper, we described the key functions of CIM justification evaluation using IDEF methodology and developed the applicattion procedure of DMP and MUF method for CIM justification.

  • It is very common to produce fairytales, folktales, or fables into animations. If they often transform existing works into animations, we may have to examine how they change the original to communicate with the audience and also how they change the original's subject matter or theme to create meaning. The purpose of this study is to consider how the original's meaning and value were changed as Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale, "The Snow Queen", was converted into an animation, , and also how it influenced the work itself. To attain the goal, this author is going to comparatively analyze the two works' narratives, actants, and semiotic squares by using A.J. Greimas' semiology. According to the findings, although "The Snow Queen" expresses the desire to go back to happy days in the past, it is not a simple return to the past but a stepwise process to become mature mentally as well as religiously. Meanwhile, intends to generate past-oriented meaning expressing the desire to return what is abnormal in the present to what was normal in the past and resolve the individual and religious aspects of "The Snow Queen" in a social and popular way.

  • We designed wideband HTS antennas which consists of two triangle -radiation patches using a $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-X}$ (YBCO) superconducting thin film. The major limitation of high-Tc superconducting (HTS) microstrip antennas is the narrow bandwidth due to the high Q and thin substrate. Defining bandwidth as the frequency range over which standing wave ratio (SWR) 2:1 or less, HTS antenna bandwidths are typically 0.85 % to 1.1 %. Thus considerable effort has been focused on developing antennas for broadband operation. To calculate input impedance and design of the broadband HTS antennas a moment method technique was used. The HTS antenna fabricated in this work was designed for K-band, which is useful band for satellite to satellite communications. The bandwidth obtained was a significant 6.7 % and the other measured performance of our HTS antenna, including the bandwidth, radiation Pattern, efficiency, standing wave ratio (SWR) and return losses was reported.

  • The traditional portfolio optimization problem is to find an investment plan for securities with reasonable trade-off between the rate of return and the risk. The seminal work in this field is the mean-variance model by Markowitz, which is a quadratic programming problem. Since it is now computationally practical to solve the model, a number of alternative models to overcome this complexity have been proposed. In this paper, among the alternatives, we focus on the Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) model. More specifically, we developed an algorithm to obtain an optimal portfolio from the MAD model. We showed mathematically that the algorithm can solve the problem to optimality. We tested it using the real data from the Korean Stock Market. The results coincide with our expectation that the method can solve a variety of problems in a reasonable computational time.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the possible contributing factors and surgical results of rotator cuff tears in patients younger than 40 years of age. Materials and Methods: From July, 1996 to February, 2000, twelve patients were available to participate in the study. The average age was 35 years (range, 17 to 40 years) old. Follow-up averaged eighteen months (range, 12 to 55 months). There were eleven men and one women. Each shoulder was evaluated with UCLA shoulder functional assessment, return-to-work status, return-to-sport status, and overall postoperative satisfaction. Results: After operation, eleven patients (92%) reported diminished pain relative to their preoperative level, and ten patients (83%) were improved in shoulder function. eleven patients (92%) exhibited improved strength after operation. nine patients (75%) returned to employment, and six patients (50%) returned to sports activities. Preoperative UCLA score averaged 12 and postoperative score averaged 31. Ten patients (83%) were satisfied with the outcome of their treatment. Conclusion: A traumatic event was the etiology of the rotator cuff tears in patients younger than 40 years. Results of surgical treatment in this younger group were satisfactory.

  • A high assurance IP encryption (HAIPE) compliant protocol accelerator is proposed for military networks consisting of red (or classified) networks and black (or unclassified) networks. The boundary between red and black sides is assumed to be protected via a HAIPE device. However, the IP layer encryption introduces challenges for bandwidth on demand satellite communication. The problems experienced by transmission control protocol (TCP) over satellites are well understood: While standard modems (on the black side) employ TCP performance enhancing proxy (PEP) which has been shown to work well, the HAIPE encryption of TCP headers renders the onboard modem's PEP ineffective. This is attributed to the fact that under the bandwidth-on-demand environment, PEP must use traditional TCP mechanisms such as slow start to probe for the available bandwidth of the link (which eliminates the usefulness of the PEP). Most implementations recommend disabling the PEP when a HAIPE device is used. In this paper, we propose a novel solution, namely broadband HAIPE-embeddable satellite communications terminal (BHeST), which utilizes dynamic network performance enhancement algorithms for high latency bandwidth-on-demand satellite links protected by HAIPE. By moving the PEP into the red network and exploiting the explicit congestion notification bypass mechanism allowed by the latest HAIPE standard, we have been able to regain PEP's desired network enhancement that was lost due to HAIPE encryption (even though the idea of deploying PEP at the modem side is not new). Our BHeST solution employs direct video broadcast-return channel service (DVB-RCS), an open standard as a means of providing bandwidth-on-demand satellite links. Another issue we address is the estimation of current satellite bandwidth allocated to a remote terminal which is not available in DVBRCS. Simulation results show that the improvement of our solution over FIX PEP is significant and could reach up to 100%. The improvement over the original TCP is even more (up to 500% for certain configurations).
