The purpose of this study was to measure the retentive force of various kinds of dental cement. Cross-cutting the half of the occlusal surface, pinholes were prepared on the dentin with No. 557 carbide bur. No. 557 steel burs were cemented in the pinholes and retentive force was measured by removing the burs with Instron testing machine. The Instron testing machine was operated at a rate of 0.2 cm per minute. The following results were obtained : 1. The retentive force of zinc phosphate cement(A), reinforced zinc oxide and eugenol cement and polycarboxylate cement were similar to each other, but that of zinc phosphate cement (A) was the highest of all. 2. The retentive force of zinc phosphate cement (B) was the lowest of all.

PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to compare the changes in retentive force of stud attachments for implant overdentures by in vitro 2-year-wear simulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three commercially available attachment systems were investigated: Kerator blue, O-ring red, and EZ lock. Two implant fixtures were embedded in parallel in each custom base mounting. Five pairs of each attachment system were tested. A universal testing machine was used to measure the retentive force during 2500 insertion and removal cycles. Surface changes on the components were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by Pairwise comparison, was used to compare the retentive force between the groups, and to determine groups that were significantly different (${\alpha}$<.05). RESULTS. A comparison of the initial retentive force revealed the highest value for Kerator, followed by the O-ring and EZ lock attachments. However, no significant difference was detected between Kerator and O-ring (P>.05). After 2500 insertion and removal cycles, the highest retention loss was recorded for O-ring, and no significant difference between Kerator and EZ lock (P>.05). Also, Kerator showed the highest retentive force, followed by EZ lock and O-ring, after 2500 cycles (P<.05). Based on SEM analysis, the polymeric components in O-ring and Kerator were observed to exhibit surface wear and deformation. CONCLUSION. After 2500 insertion and removal cycles, all attachments exhibited significant loss in retention. Mechanism of retention loss can only be partially explained by surface changes.

PURPOSE. Esthetic expectations have increased the use of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) clasps as alternatives to Cr-Co in removable partial dentures (RPDs). The objective of this study was to evaluate the retentive force and dimensional change of clasps with different thickness and undercut made from PEEK by the thermo-mechanical fatigue. MATERIALS AND METHODS. PEEK clasps (N = 48) with thicknesses of 1 or 1.50 mm and 48 premolar monolithic zirconia crowns with undercuts of 0.25 mm or 0.50 mm were fabricated. Samples are divided into four groups (C1-C4) and were subjected to 7200 thermal aging cycles (at 5 - 55℃). The changes in the retentive force and dimensions of the clasps were measured by micro-stress testing and micro-CT devices from five measurement points (M1 - M5). One-way ANOVA, paired t-test, two-way repeated ANOVA, and post-hoc tests were used to analyze the data (P < .05). RESULTS. The retentive forces of C1, C2, C3, and C4 groups in initial and final test were found to be 4.389-3.388 N, 4.67 - 3.396 N, 5.161 - 4.096 N, 5.459 - 4.141 N, respectively. The effects of retentive force of all PEEK clasps groups were significant decreased. Thermo-mechanical cycles caused significant dimensional changes at points with M2, M4, and M5, and abraded the clasp corners and increased the distance between the ends of the clasp, resulting in reduced retentive forces (P* = .016, P* = .042, P < .001, respectively). CONCLUSION. Thermo-mechanical aging decreases the retentive forces in PEEK clasps. Increasing the thickness and undercut amount of clasps decreases the amount of dimensional change. The values measured after aging are within the clinically acceptable limits.
In order to investigate various physical and biological properties of dental magnetic attachments studies on retentive characteristics, corrosion properties, cytotoxicity of different magnetic systems for dental applications were done. For the study of retentive characteristics changes of retentive force by increasing air gap, wear properties of various attachment systems and loss of magnetic force by heat treatment were measured. Forte study of corrosion property of magnet covering metal electrochemical corrosion was done in artificial saliva and 0.9% NaCl solution between $-1,000mV_{SCE}\;and\;+1,000mV_{SCE}$. Anodic polarization curves are obtained about 6 types of samples and 2 types of solution. Corroded surfaces were examined with metallurgical microscope, scanning electron microscope and surface profilometer. For the study of cytotoxicity of magnetic attachment and its field cell growth and agar overlay test were done. The results of this study were as follows. 1. In Magnetic attachments using closed circuit retentive force at zero air gap was greater than magnets using open circuit, but decrease of retentive force by increasing air gap was also greater than open systems. 2. After 40,000 cycles of wear test all mechanical attachment resulted in varing degree of retention loss but in magnetic attachments no loss of retentive force was observed. 3. The magnetic attachment using Neodymium magnet showed early loss of retentive force about $200^{\circ}C$ but attachment using Samarium magnet showed some resistance to heat treatment and complete retention loss was observed about $500^{\circ}C$. The keeper was not influenced by heat treatment in retention. 4. In electrochemical corrosion test Dyna magnetic attachment covering metal showed the highiest corrosion resistance and Shiner magnet covering metal showed the least corrosion resistance and examination of corroded surface with metallurgical microscope, scanning electron micro-scope and surface profilometer also showed same results with anodic polarization corves. 5. The result of cell culture tests on the magnet covered with metal showed least recognizable cytotoxicity.

Purpose: With gold electroforming system fir the double crown, the secondary crown is electroformed directly onto the primary crown. An even thick layer of high precision can be acquired. It is thought that the retention of electroformed outer crown is primarily acquired by the adhesive force (surface tension) through the saliva which is interposed between precisely fitted inner and outer crown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of taper and surface area of inner crown on the retentive force of electroformed outer crown according to the presence of saliva. Materials and methods: 32 titanium inner crowns with cervical diameter of 8 mm and cone angles of 0, 2, 4, 6 degrees, which had same surface area by regulated height, were machined on a lathe. Another 32 titanium inner crowns with cone angles of 0, 2, 4, 6 degrees, which had doubled surface area by increased cervical diameter. were fabricated. Eight specimens of each group, for a total of 64 titanium inner crowns, were prepared. The electroformed outer crowns were fabricated directly on the inner crowns by using electroforming machine(GAMMAT free, Gramm Technik, Germany). The tertiary frameworks were waxed-up on the electroformed outer crown and cast using nonprecious alloy($Rexillium^(R)III,\;Jeneric^(R)/Pentronh^(R)$ Inc., USA). The cast metal frameworks were sandblasted with alubimium oxides and cemented using resin cement(Superbond C&B, Sun Medical Co., Japan) over the electroformed copings of each specimen. Then, artificial saliva($Taliva^(R)$, Halim Pharm. Co., Korea) was sprayed between the inner and outer crown, and they were connected under 5 kg force. The retentive force was measured by the universal testing machine(Tinius Olsen 1000, Tinius Olsen, USA) with a cross-head speed of 66.67 mm/sec. The direction of cross-head travel was exactly aligned with the path of removal of the respective specimens. This measurement procedures for retentive force of electroformed outer crown with artificial saliva were repeated in the same way without presence of artificial saliva. Results and Conclusion: The following conclusions were drawn: 1. The retentive force of electroformed outer crown was decreased according to increased taper of inner crown(P<.05). 2. The retentive force of electroformed outer crown showed no significant differences according to surface area and the presence of artificial saliva(P>.05).

Statement of problem: It could be hypothesised that attachments, which provide more retention against vortical and horizontal dislodgement, will be associated with more favorable parameters of oral function. Purpose: This study was to provide data of initial retentive force and retention loss of different bar attachment systems recommended for use with maxillary implant overdentures. Material and method: 4 implants were placed in the anterior region of edentulous maxilla, five different systems of bar attachment were fabricated as follows: cantilevered Hader bar using clips (Type 1), Hader bar using clips without cantilever (Type 2), Hader bar using clip and ERA attachment orange male (Type 3), Hader bar using clip and ERA attachment white male (Type 4), and Bar using magnets (Type 5). Each samples were placed in the universal testing machine for determination of retentive forces(at initial and after every 200 cycles up to 1,000 cycles). Results and Conclusion 1. Attachment type 1 showed the biggest initial retentive force followed by type 3, type 2, type 4, and lastly type 5(P<0.001). 2. After 1,000 cycles of repeated removals of attachments, significant loss of retentive forces was taken place except for attachment type 5. 3. After 1,000 cycles of repeated removals, the loss of retentive force between type 1 and type 2, which used Hader bar and clip attachments. was greater in type 1 that had wider clip formation. And between type 3 and type 4, which used ERA attachments, the loss of retentive force was greater in type 4 that had white male attached (P<0.001). 4. After 1.000 cycles of repeated removals, attachment type 3 showed the biggest retentive force followed by type 2, type 4, type 1 and lastly type. 5. There was no significant difference between attachment type 3 and 4, and type 4 and 1(P<0.001).
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of type of magnet attachment and implant angulation in two implant overdenture models. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Magnet attachments used in this study were flat and dome types (MGT5515, MGT5520D, Dentium Co., Seoul, Korea). Two implants with keepers were inserted in the resin blocks at a distance of 24 mm. For the first model, the implants were parallel to the vertical and perpendicular to the horizontal; for the second model, both were angulated 5 degrees to the mesial; for the third model, both were angulated 10 degrees toward the mesial. The retentive force was measured in both vertical and lateral directions. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software version 22.0 (α=.05). RESULTS. The flat type magnet attachment showed the highest lateral retentive force in the 20° divergent group (P<.05) and the dome type magnet attachment showed the highest lateral retentive force in the parallel group (P<.05). The vertical and lateral retentive force of the dome type magnet attachment was greater than that of the flat type magnet attachment in every direction (P<.05). CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, the dome shape magnet attachment can resist vertical and lateral retentive force more superiorly than the flat type magnet attachment, regardless of angle, in the mandibular two implant model.

The adjustable dental impression trays were made for being adjusted their width automatically along the width of patient's dental arch. The purpose of this study was to investigate the retentive force of adjustable dental impression trays made of different synthetic resin materials. Three pairs of adjustable trays were made of ABS(acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) synthetic resin, polyurethane synthetic resin and polycarbonate synthetic resin with a hole and without a rim on the border area of them. The experiment was done with the horse-shoe shaped metal plate to pull out the set impression body from the tray jig which was made for holding the tray on the lower part of Universal Testing Machine(UTM, Zwick Z020, Zwick Co., Germany). After the alginate impression in the tray was allowed to set four minutes, a tensile force was applied at right angles to the tray which had been previously seated on the jig. The force was applied to measure a maximum force by use of UTM at a constant strain rate 100mm per minute. The results obtained in this study were as follows : 1. The upper trays were showed higher retentive force than lower trays in three tray materials. 2. There was no significant difference in the retentive force of the tray materials(p>0.05).
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the retentive characteristics of the additional attachments used with implant bar attachment under repeated insertion/removal cycles. Materials and methods: The newly developed attachment and the commercially available attachment were investigated: ADD-Lock (AL), Locator blue (LB). Two fixtures were placed parallel to each other on the custom lower mounting, and patrix of each attachment was fixed to the fixture. Also, the matrix of each attachment was placed on the opposing upper mounting. A universal testing machine was used to measure the retentive force during initial, 100, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, and 2500 repeated insertion/removal cycles. Wear and deformation of the attachment s were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mann-Whitney U test (α=.05) and wilcoxon signed-rank test (α=.05) were performed to compare retentive force between each group and before and after 2500 repeated insertion/removal cycles. Results: In terms of initial retentive force and retentive force after 2500 repeated insertion/removal cycles, the AL group (15.24 ± 1.46 N and 9.74 ± 1.16 N) showed significantly smaller values than the LB group (43.53 ± 12.39 N and 22.99 ± 4.77 N) (P<.05). Also, in the loss of retentive force, the AL group (5.50 ± 1.08 N, 36.08%) showed a smaller value than the LB group (20.54 ± 11.89 N, 47.19%) (P<.05). Based on SEM analysis, The AL group showed noticeable wear and deformation in the patrix and the LB group in the matrix. Conclusion: Locator showed a higher initial retentive force than newly developed attachment, while the loss of retentive force was also higher. Both additional attachments are considered to have sufficient retentive force after repeated insertion/removal cycles.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the retention of the two denture adhesives with a silicone edentulous model and a resin denture base in vitro study. Material and methods: The experimental groups were used two denture adhesives and classified into 5 subgroups each. Subgroups were divided by the number of times the saliva sprayed. The control group was used synthetic saliva only. Dislodging tensile strengths were applied to the resin denture base using Instron in 3 directions ; vertical, lateral, and anterior-posterior. Results: The retention of two denture adhesives was increased significantly than saliva alone (P <.05). In each denture adhesives, the retention of saliva sprayed first was decreased than denture adhesive alone, but it didn't have significant differences. Whenever saliva sprayed repeated, the retention was decreased significantly than saliva sprayed first (P <.05). In each denture adhesives, vertical retentive force was highest than lateral and anterior-posterior retentive forces, and anterior-posterior retentive force was higher than lateral retentive force. This results were significantly different (P < .05). Significant differences of the retentive ability among two denture adhesives were not observed. Conclusion: From the results, use of the denture adhesives resulted in improved retentive ability of denture. Especially retentive force was highest in vertical direction.
