  • In this study, to investigate and to predict the crack growth behavior under variable amplitude loading, crack growth tests are conducted on 7075-T6 aluminum alloy. The loading wave forms are generated by normal random number generator. All wave forms have same average and RMS(root mean square) value, but different standard deviation, which is to vary the maximum load in each wave. The modified Forman's equation is used as crack growth equation. Using the retardation coefficient D defined in previous study, the load interaction effect is considered. The variability in crack growth process is described by the random variable Z which was obtained from crack growth tests under constant amplitude loading in previous work. From these, a statistical model is developed. The curves predicted by the proposed model well describe the crack growth behavior under variable amplitude loading and agree with experimental data. In addition, this model well predicts the variability in crack growth process under variable amplitude loading.

  • The sorption of radioactive cobalt and ruthenium on alumina, silica gel, zeolite 3A, kaolin and Na-bentonite has been studied as a function of pH. nuclide concentration and ionic strength. Retardation factor for cobalt and ruthenium on soil minerals was determined through porosity measurement. Hydrolysed species, cobalt and ruthenium interact with solid surfaces by physical adsorption processes. Freundlich sorption isotherms for cobalt and ruthenium are effectively linear. The sorption decreases with increasing ionic strength for cobalt and ruthenium. The effect of increasing porosity on the retardation factor countered the effect of a significant increase in the distribution coefficient.

  • Retardation effect of heavy metals in soils caused by adsorption onto the surfaces of solids particles is well known phenomenon. In this study, we investigated the retardation effect on the mobility of a Zn in a sandy soil by conducting batch and column tests. The column test consisted of monitoring the concentrations of effluent versus time known as a breakthrough curve (BTC). We used NaCl and ZnCl$_2$ solutions with the concentration of 10 g/L as a tracer, and injected them respectively into the inlet boundary of the soil sample as a square pulse type, and monitored the effluent concentrations at the exit boundary under a steady state condition using an EC-meter and ICP-AES. The batch test was conducted based on the standard procedure of equilibrating fine fractions collected from the soil with various initial ZnCl$_2$ concentrations, and analysis of Zn ions in the equilibrated solutions using ICP-AES. The results of column test showed that i) the peak concentration of ZnCl$_2$analyzed by ICP was far less than that of either NaCl or bulk electrical conductivity and ⅱ) travel times of peak concentrations for two tracers were more less identical. The relatively low concentration of Zn can be explained by ion exchange between Zn and other cations, and possible precipitation of Zn in the form of Zn(OH)$_2$due to high pH range (7.0∼7.9) of the effluent. The identical result of travel times of peak concentrations indicates that the retardation effect is not present in the soil. The only way to describe the prominent decrease of Zn ion was to introduce decay or sink coefficient in the CDE model to account for irreversible decrease of Zn ions in the aqueous phase.

  • Retardation and hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient necessary for model of water and solute movement in a soil were determined for horizontal soil column with different initial soil water conditions. The soil columns were compacted with sandy loam soil. The bulk density was $1,350+50kg/m^3$, and initial water contents were 0.05, 0.08 and 0.14. Advancement of 0.05% $CaSO_4$ solution was used as the standard and advancements of 0.5% KCl, $CaCl_2$ and $KH_2PO_4$ were compared. Retardation of non-reactive $Cl^-$ was related with the initial soil water content, ${\theta}n$, as ${\theta}/({\theta}-{\theta}n)$, and anion exclusion was ignored. Retardations of active $K^+$, $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ and $H_2PO_4{^-}$ were related as 1/(R+1) $^*{\theta}/({\theta}-{\theta}n)$, in which R was retardation coefficient. Measured R was 0.64 for $K^+$, 0.80 for $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ and 2.6 for $H_2PO_4{^-}$, respectively. Calculated R using Langmuir adsorption isotherm showed fair degree of applicability. Soil water diffusivity, $D({\theta}),m^2/sec$, calculated for different initial water content showed unique function as $$log(D({\theta}))=13.448{\theta}-9.288$$ Hydrodynamic dispersion coefficient of $Cl^-$ above soil water content 0.36 was similar to soil water diffusivity and decreased to near self diffusion coefficient at soil water content near 0.2. Those of $K^+$, $Ca^{{+}{+}}$ $H_2PO_4{^-}$ at soil water content of 0.38 were $5.5{\times}10^{-6}$, $2.4{\times}10^{-6}$ and $7.1{\times}10^{-7}m^2/sec$ and decreased rapidly with decreasing soil water content lower than 0.36.

  • The one of the most important factors we shoud consider in designing the processes using porous media such as activated carbon adsorber is the prediction of the breakthrough curve. In this study, the breakthrough curve of BAC process for the treatment of refractory pollutants was evaluated by simplified engineering analysis. Through the experiments, the slope of the breakthrough curve can be determined by retardation factor, R and apparent dispersion coefficient, $D_{app}$ which is determined by hydrodynamic dispersion, mass transfer effects and isotherm. Estimated concentration of effluent was agreed with the experimental values. Also, it is possible to use this method for predicting the breakthrough curve of the pollutants removal and tranport of pollutants in porous media.

  • The migration equation is modified for a three-member decay chain in the fracture and porous matrix Analytical solutions are obtained by utilizing Laplace transform the initial conditions of Delta function and Bateman equation. The concentrations for each nuclide of Np$^{237}$ -U$^{233}$ -Th$^{229}$ and U$^{234}$ -Th$^{230}$ -Ra$^{226}$ chains selected from the 4n+1 and 4n+2 chains are plotted by utilizing analytical solutions in the fracture. Retardation coefficient of the nuclides are obtained using those of the granite. The results indicate that the daughter nuclides such as U$^{233}$ , Th$^{229}$ , Th$^{230}$ and Ra$^{226}$ become important at the far field from the repository though there is very small initial inventory in the waste solid or spent fuel, for they are produced by the mother nuclides decayed in the fracture and porous matrix.

  • In this study, to propose the prediction method of the crack growth under flight-simulation loading, crack growth tests are conducted on 2124-7851 aluminum alloy specimens. The prediction of crack growth under flight-simulation loading is performed by the stochastic crack growth model which was developed in previous study. First of all, to reduce the complex load history into a number of constant amplitude events, rainflow counting is applied to the flight-simulation loading wave. The crack growth, then, is predicted by the stochastic crack growth model that can describe the load interaction effect as well as the variability in crack growth process. The material constants required in this model are obtained from crack growth tests under constant amplitude loading and single tensile overload. The curves predicted by the proposed model well describe the crack growth behavior under flight-simulation loading and agree with experimental data. In addition, this model well predicts the variability of fatigue lives.

  • In this study, estimation of nonlinear adsorption isotherms(Langmuir & Freundlich adsorption isotherm) and advection-dispersion model parameters was conducted using genetic algorithm(GA) for Zn and Cd adsorption. Estimated parameters of nonlinear adsorption isotherms, which were obtained from the optimization process using genetic algorithm(GA), are nearly same with the parameters obtained from a linearization process of the nonlinear isotherms. Estimated effective diffusion coefficients, which were obtained from a finite element analysis of the advection-dispersion model and an optimization procedure using the genetic algorithm, for the metals were approximately in the order of $10^{-7}cm^2/s$ which could be obtained based on the linear distribution coefficient. The effective diffusion coefficients based on the nonlinear retardation factors were in the range of $10^{-6}{\sim}10^{-5}cm^2/s$. As a result, the correlation coefficient obtained between the measured and calculated concentration was over 0.9 which means that the genetic algorithm should be successfully applied to estimate the unknown parameters of the nonlinear adsorption isotherms and advection-dispersion model.
