Application of Three-dimensional Scanning, Haptic Modeling, and Printing Technologies for Restoring Damaged Artifacts

  • This study examined the applicability of digital technologies based on three-dimensional(3D) scanning, modeling, and printing to the restoration of damaged artifacts. First, 3D close-range scanning was utilized to make a high-resolution polygon mesh model of a roof-end tile with a missing part, and a 3D virtual restoration of the missing part was conducted using a haptic interface. Furthermore, the virtual restoration model was printed out with a 3D printer using the material extrusion method and a PLA filament. Then, the additive structure of the printed output with a scanning electron microscope was observed and its shape accuracy was analyzed through 3D deviation analysis. It was discovered that the 3D printing output of the missing part has high dimensional accuracy and layer thickness, thus fitting extremely well with the fracture surface of the original roof-end tile. The convergence of digital virtual restoration based on 3D scanning and 3D printing technology has helped in minimizing contact with the artifact and broadening the choice of restoration materials significantly. In the future, if the efficiency of the virtual restoration modeling process is improved and the material stability of the printed output for the purpose of restoration is sufficiently verified, the usability of 3D digital technologies in cultural heritage restoration will increase.

  • 본 논문은 인공지능(AI)을 이용하여 통일신라 석탑인 '경주 불국사 삼층석탑'의 복원을 위해 3D 모델링 과정을 연구했다. 기존의 3D 모델링 방식은 수많은 Verts와 Face를 생성하므로, 이로 인해 AI 학습에 상당한 시간이 소요한다. 이에 따라, Verts와 Face의 수를 낮추어 더 효율적인 3D 모델링을 수행하는 방식이 필요하다. 이를 위해, 본 연구에서는 석탑의 구조를 정점 및 면의 수로 분석하고, AI 학습에 최적화된 면수를을 최소화 하도록 모델링 방법을 연구했다. 더불어, 우리나라의 석탑 복원을 위한 인공지능학습에 최적화된 모델링 방법론을 제안하고, 인공지능 학습에 필요한 DataSet 을 확보하는 데 의미가 있다.

Equalized Net Diffusion (END) for the Preservation of Fine Structures in PDE-based Image Restoration

  • The article is concerned with a mathematical modeling which can improve performances of PDE-based restoration models. Most PDE-based restoration models tend to lose fine structures due to certain degrees of nonphysical dissipation. Sources of such an undesirable dissipation are analyzed for total variation-based restoration models. Based on the analysis, the so-called equalized net diffusion (END) modeling is suggested in order for PDE-based restoration models to significantly reduce nonphysical dissipation. It has been numerically verified that the END-incorporated models can preserve and recover fine structures satisfactorily, outperforming the basic models for both quality and efficiency. Various numerical examples are shown to demonstrate effectiveness of the END modeling.

  • This study aims to establish Nammun-ro 2ga in Cheongju city in the 1960s as three-dimensional digital information data for the restoration of urban archetypes. For this purpose, referring to the existing restoration map and model of Cheongju urban area in the 1960s, and the results of this study are as follows. Firstly, the buildings that can be generally classified are prepared through the modeling of parametric families. Secondly, the untypical models(combined and broken roofs, atypical and large scale buildings) of them are simply performed through solid modeling. And then, these simplified models are simulated through a sky view, a walking sight, and information analysis. Through this study, it will be possible to visualize and regenerate the low and dense area of Cheongju city in the 1960s.

기록화된 고고자료의 복원과 활용방안에 대한 연구 (A Study on Restoration and Utilization of Recorded Archaeological Data)

  • 고고자료의 복원은 과거 기록물로 남겨진 사진과 도면자료를 이용하여 진행하였다. 크게 유구와 유물로 구분하여 살펴보았다. 유구에 대한 복원은 사진으로 남겨진 개개 부위 및 부분을 모델링하고, 이들을 정렬 및 합성하여 하나의 객체로 3차원 복원하였다. 유물에 대한 복원은 사진을 통한 모델링 작업을 우선한 후, 모델링된 유물의 파손 부위에 대한 텍스쳐 이미지를 수정하여 원상 복원하거나, 유물 내 결실부위에 대한 모델링 제작과 합성을 통한 원상을 복원하는 방식이 있다. 도면을 통한 복원은 3차원 모델링 제작과 함께 이미지의 실사맵핑을 통한 복원을 진행하였다. 이렇게 복원된 고고자료는 과거 2D자료를 통한 수치 분석과 해석의 연구성과를 검증하고 비교를 진행할 수 있으며, 추후 더욱 정확한 분석 방안을 제시할 수 있다.

텍스트 분석을 활용한 국내 자연환경복원 연구동향 분석 (Text Analysis on the Research Trends of Nature Restoration in Korea)

  • As a global response to climate and biodiversity challenges, there is an emphasis on the conservation and restoration of ecosystems that can simultaneously reduce carbon emissions and enhance biodiversity. This study comprised a text analysis and keyword extraction of 1,100 research papers addressing nature restoration in Korea, aiming to provide a quantative and systematic evaluation of domestic research trends in this field. To discern the major research topics of these papers, topic modeling was applied and correlations were established through network analysis. Research on nature restoration exhibited a mainly upward trend in 2002-2022 but with a slight recent decline. The most common keywords were "species," "forest," and "water". Research topics were broadly classified into (1) predictions of habitat size and species distribution, (2) the conservation and utilization of natural resources in urban areas, (3) ecosystems and landscape managements in protected areas, (4) the planting and growth of vegetation, and (5) habitat formation methods. The number of studies on nature restoration are increasing across various domains in Korea, with each domain experiencing professional development.

전광 전달망 장애 복구 알고리듬의 성능 분석 (Performance Evaluation of a Distributed Restoration Algorithm for All-optical Networks)

  • This paper considers a network restoration algorithm for all-optical WDM networks. As the increasing traffic and transmission speed, any failure on the networks will lead to loss of huge data and disruption of the services. Therefore, a network restoration algorithm is necessary for the high-speed all-optical networks. This paper suggests a distributed restoration algorithm for line or channel level failures under the dynamic rerouting. For the algorithm, some measures for performance evaluation are explicitly derived and simulation studies are exploited to evaluate its usability by SLAM(Simulation Language for Alternative Modeling) II.

도심 하천 복원에 따른 주변지역 열환경 변화 특성 분석 (Analysis of the Characteristics of Thermal Environment Change Due to Urban Stream Restoration)

  • The purpose of this study is to quantitatively analyze the effects of a restoration project on the decrease in the temperature in the surrounding areas. The thermal environment characteristics of the investigation area were analyzed using the meteorological data from the Busanjin Automatic Weather System which is closest to the target area. The terrain data of the modeling domain was constructed using a digital map and the urban spatial information data, and the numerical simulation of the meteorological changes before and after the restoration of the stream was performed using the Envi-met model. The average temperature of the target area in 2016 was $15.2^{\circ}C$ and was higher than that of the suburbs. The monthly mean temperature difference was the highest at $1.1^{\circ}C$ in November and the lowest in June, indicating that the temperatures in the urban areas were high in spring and winter. From the Envi-met modeling results, reductions in temperature due to stream restoration were up to $1.7^{\circ}C$ in winter, and decreased to $3.5^{\circ}C$ in summer. The effect of temperature reduction was seen in the entire region where streams are being restored.

  • Incheon City move onward re-modeling about Jayu Park(public park) in Incheon city. The building restoration must equip all data which are necessary to a restoration and it must be advanced and, currently the project which is advanced is not like that. The place objective which evaluates the restoration possibility of the modern time building where this dissertation is included consequently in project contents it is letting. The evaluation result data is not secured not to be, the restoration is impossible. Also simplicity reappearance of the building where the function disappears without being true feelings characteristic is there is not a possibility of having a construction value. The modern time building restoration which Incheon City it propels consequently it is right to be discontinued.

석조문화유산의 형상분석을 위한 3차원 디지털복원과 표면심도 모델링:해운대 석각을 중심으로 (Three-dimensional Digital Restoration and Surface Depth Modeling for Shape Analysis of Stone Cultural Heritage: Haeundae Stone Inscription)

  • 이 연구에서는 해운대 석각을 대상으로 3차원 레이저 스캐닝 시스템을 적용하여 디지털복원 및 표면심도 모델링을 수행하였다. 먼저 석각의 3차원 디지털복원은 광대역 및 정밀 스캐너를 이용하여 점군 데이터를 획득하였고, 정합, 병합, 필터링, 폴리곤 메쉬, 도면화 작업 순으로 진행하였다. 특히 정밀 스캐닝 폴리곤은 광대역 폴리곤에 비해 글자의 필획, 음각깊이 및 선명도 등이 매우 뛰어났다. 표면심도 모델링은 폴리곤 분리, 기준축 설정, 기준점 선정, 등고선도 맵핑 및 폴리곤 병합을 통해 완성하였으며, 사진과 폴리곤 이미지에 비해 글자의 상대적 음각깊이(5~17mm)와 윤곽이 매우 뚜렷하게 나타났다. 광대역 및 정밀 스캐닝을 병합한 디지털복원 기술을 통해 석각의 전체 형태와 미세형상을 신속하고 정확하게 복원하였고, 표면심도 모델링은 육안과 사진으로 불분명했던 부분을 가시적으로 표현해주었다. 앞으로 정기적인 모니터링을 통해 석각의 다양한 손상과 시간에 따른 주변 환경 변화를 수치적으로 분석할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.
