  • A study was planned to see if the mammillary bodies have any influence upon orienting response Thirty-nine male rats were divided into two groups. One group of animals received electrolytic lesion of the mammillary bodies through stereotaxically implanted electrodes (mammillary body group), and the other group received the same treatment short of electrolytic lesion(operated control group). All animals were tested for orienting response 3 weeks after surgery. Orienting response was regarded as elicited when an animal in alertness ceased ongoing activity upon 1,000 Hz tone presentation and/or turned head toward the source of stimulus. Weak (momentary and inconspicuous) and strong (marked and more persistent) responses were discriminated. Occurrence and duration of orienting response were measured, and the rate of habituation was estimated in 20 trials. Shift of attention from sound to light stimulus (10 trials) as well as orienting response of thirsty animals to sound stimulus while drinking (5 trials) and while at rest (5 trials) were also tested. 1. Simple orienting respons to sound stimulus tended to occur more often and its duration tended to be shorter in the mammillary body group than in the operated control group. 2. With repetition of trials, the occurrence of orienting response in each trial decreased progressively in both groups (habituation). However, the rate of habituation was significantly less prominent in the mammillary body group than in the operated control group. 3. Under attention·shift situation, orienting response tended to occur less often and its duration tended to be shorter in the mammillary body group than in the operated control group. 4. Orienting response to sound stimulus while drinking to quench thirst tended to occur more often and its duration tended to be shorter in the mammillary body group than in the operated control group. In quiet state, however, there existed no group difference with regard to the occurrence and duration of the orienting response. Although no obvious inference can be drawn from the above results, they may suggest the mammillary bodies being involved in the orienting response as a control mechanism inhibitory to the occurrence and facilitatory to the habituation of the response.

  • The exchange rate is an important macroeconomic variable that influences internal and external balances. Nepal follows a dual exchange rate such that the Nepali rupee (NPR) is pegged with the Indian rupee (INR) but floats with the United States dollar (USD) and all other currencies. There have been very few studies on the exchange rate of Nepal, of which the majority focus on the bivariate relationship between exchange rate and another variable. However, this paper analyses the multivariate relationship between the USD-NPR exchange rate and major macroeconomic variables. Determinants of Nepal's exchange rate have been derived with multiple regression using the ordinary least square (OLS) approach. Since the explanatory variables could not significantly capture the movement of the dependent variable, a long-run relationship between Nepal and India's exchange rate has been analyzed using Engle-Granger cointegration to establish a relationship as suggested by a graphical representation. This explains that Nepal's exchange rate long run is determined by India's exchange rate than its own fundamentals. In addition, the macro-linkages of Nepal's macroeconomic variables have been analyzed using Standard Vector Autoregressive models followed by impulse response analysis which is useful for policy decisions. Some policy implications indicating the sustainability of Nepal's pegged regime have been drawn based on the empirical analysis.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the combined effects of VFA composition of rumen fluid and heat exposure (30${\pm}$2$^{\circ}C$) on the general clinical view and insulin secretory response to glucose in sheep. The total infusion of nutrients was examined in sheep via the technique of continuous alimentation. Four adult Suffolk sheep fitted with a permanent ruminal cannula and a simple T-shaped duodenal cannula were used. A peristaltic pump was used to infuse the solutions of volatile fatty acid triglycerides (VFA-TG) consisting of 70 triacetin : 20 tripropionin : 10 tributyrin (low propionin division: LP) and 50 triacetin : 40 tripropionin : 10 tributyrin (high propionin division: HP) on the basis of energy and minerals into the rumen, and casein solution into the duodenum. The effects of heat exposure and type of the levels of VFA-TG solutions on the insulin secretory response to glucose in sheep were investigated by using hyperglycemic clamp (HGC) technique. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. During the heat exposure (latter half of the infusion period), respiration rate, heart rate and rectal temperature increased (P<0.01, P<0.01, P<0.05), but the levels of VFA-TG solutions (LP and HP division) did not affect the general clinical view except for the heart rate. 2. In the HGC technique, glucose infusion rate (GIR) and mean plasma insulin increments (MPII) tended to be ower in the heat exposure than in the thermoneutral environment, but no significant difference was found among the treatments. GIR and MPII remained unchanged between the levels of VFA-TG solutions. 3. In the HGC technique, ratio of MPII to GIR (MPII/GIR) which represents pancreatic ${\beta}$-cell response to glucose stimulation remained unchanged among the treatments.

  • Procedures, such as sampling technique, survey method, and questionnaire preparation, are required in order to obtain sample data in accordance with the purpose of a survey. An important procedure is the decision of the sample size formula. The sample size formula is determined by setting the target error and total cost according to the sampling method. In this paper, we propose a sample size formula using population changes over time, estimation error of the previous time and response rate of past data when the target error and the expected response rate are given in the simple random sampling. In actual research, we use estimators that apply complex weights in addition to design-based weights. Therefore, we induce a sample size formula for estimators using design-based weights and nonresponse adjustment coefficients, that can be a formula that reflects differences in response rates when survey methods are changed over time. In addition, we use simulations to compare the proposed formula with the existing sample size formula.

  • In this paper, a high efficiency motor drive system which improves the multi-step response of PM step motors by reducing the transition time of the motor drive current, is studied by designing a dual-voltage drive circuit. The designed drive circuit eventually prevents the motor from decreasing drive torque while the stepping rate is increased. The method of designing a dual-voltage drive circuit with the motor specifications is suggested in order to improve the response of step rate and drive efficiency. Also, despite improving the power efficiency on motor driving, the response characterstics suggested by the motor manufacture's specifications are satisfied without any special deficiency.

  • To extract apple pectins, apple pomace (AP) was extruded under 14 different conditions of screw speed (250-350 rpm), feed rate of 30-40 kg/hr, and 20-30% moisture content using twin-screw extrusion. Response surface methodology (RSM), based on three variables by three-level factorial design, was employed to investigate effects of screw speed, feed rate, and moisture on dependent variables of extrudates, soluble dietary fiber (SDF), yield of anhydrogalacturonic acid ($Y_{AGA}$) representing pectin, and intrinsic viscosity ([${\eta}$]). Second order models were used to generate three-dimensional response surface for dependent variables, and their coefficients of determination ($R^2$) ranged from 0.96 to 0.99. Moisture content showed highest effect on solubilization of AP.

  • This study has investigated a psychological status of optimal and pleasant driving condition by measuring various physiological signals using SCR(skin conductance response), PPG(peripheral plethysmograph), SKT(skin temperature) and HR(heart rate). The physiological response was measured during various simulated driving conditions. We developed a hardware and algorithm to measure and analyze the physiological response. The physiological signals has reflected the level of driver's tension or relaxation as well as the heart rate. The emotional responses of drivers were also measured and analyzed in this experiment. The result of the study can be used to design a system to enhance the driver's emotional satisfaction as well as to monitor the driver's safety and health condition.

  • Background: This systemic analysis was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of an ifosfamide-containing regimen in treating patients with osteosarcoma. Methods: Clinical studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of Ifosfamide-containing regimen on response and safety for patients with osteosarcoma were identified by using a predefined search strategy. Pooled response rate (RR) of treatment were calculated. Results: When ifosfamide-containing regimens were evaluated, 4 clinical studies which including 134 patients with osteosarcoma were considered eligible for inclusion. Systemic analysis suggested that, in all patients, pooled RR was 44.8% (60/134) in ifosfamide-containing regimens. Major adverse effects were neutropenia, leukopenia, and fatigue inIfosfamide-containing regimens; No treatment related death occurred in cantharidin combined regimens. Conclusion: This systemic analysis suggests that ifosfamide-containing regimens are associated with good response rate and acceptable toxicity in treating patients with osteosarcoma, but this result should be confirmed by randomized clinical trials.

  • From Feb.1985 to Feb.1988,76 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the lung treated at the Department of Therapeutic Radiology in Kyungpook National University Hospital were available for the analysis of this study. All patients received radiation of 4000cGy-6600cGy with curative aim. The overall rate of complete response was 25.0% and partial response was 452.6% The complete and partial regression of tumor was 14.3% in patients treated with dose below 5000cGy and 84.1% in the group treated with dose above 5000cGy (p<0.01). The complete response was seen only in the group of patients received radiation at least 6000cGy. The patterns of failure were as follows. The rate of initial intrathoracic recurrence was 52.6% in patients with complete response. The overall rate of failure was 68.8%. Distant metastasis was found in 47.4% of patients. Bone, contralateral lung, and brain were common metastatic sites in decreasing order All of the distant metastases and 80% of local recurrences were found within the first year after treatment.
