  • In order to predict inelastic displacement response without nonlinear dynamic analysis, the equal displacement rule can be used for the structures with longer natural periods than the characteristic period, $T_g$, of earthquake record. In the period range longer than $T_g$, peak displacement responses of elastic systems are equal or larger than those of inelastic systems. In the period range shorter than $T_g$, opposite trend occurs. In the equal displacement rule, it is assumed that peak displacement of inelastic system with longer natural period than $T_g$ equals to that of elastic system with same natural period. The equal displacement rule is very useful for seismic design purpose of structures with longer natural period than $T_g$. In the period range shorter than $T_g$, the peak displacement of inelastic system can be simply evaluated from the peak displacement of elastic system by using the inelastic displacement ratio, which is defined as the ratio of the peak inelastic displacement to the peak elastic displacement. Smooth hysteretic behavior is more similar to actual response of real structural system than a piece-wise linear hysteretic behavior such as bilinear or stiffness degrading behaviors. In this paper, the inelastic displacement ratios of the smooth hysteretic behavior system are evaluated for far-fault and near-fault earthquakes. The simple formula of inelastic displacement ratio considering the effect of $T_g$ is proposed.

  • In the companion paper (I - Database and Site Response Analyses), site-specific response analyses were performed at more than 300 domestic sites. In this study, a new site classification system and design response spectra are proposed using results of the site-specific response analyses. Depth to bedrock (H) and average shear wave velocity of soil above the bedrock ($V_{S,Soil}$) were adopted as parameters to classify the sites into sub-categories because these two factors mostly affect site amplification, especially for shallow bedrock region. The 20 m of depth to bedrock was selected as the initial parameter for site classification based on the trend of site coefficients obtained from the site-specific response analyses. The sites having less than 20 m of depth to bedrock (H1 sites) are sub-divided into two site classes using 260 m/s of $V_{S,Soil}$ while the sites having greater than 20 m of depth to bedrock (H2 sites) are sub-divided into two site classes at $V_{S,Soil}$ equal to 180 m/s. The integration interval of 0.4 ~ 1.5 sec period range was adopted to calculate the long-period site coefficients ($F_v$) for reflecting the amplification characteristics of Korean geological condition. In addition, the frequency distribution of depth to bedrock reported for Korean sites was also considered in calculating the site coefficients for H2 sites to incorporate sites having greater than 30 m of depth to bedrock. The relationships between the site coefficients and rock shaking intensity were proposed and then subsequently compared with the site coefficients of similar site classes suggested in other codes.

  • In the companion paper (II, Development of Site Classification System), new size classification system based on site periods $(T_G)$ was recommended for legions of shallow bedrock depth in Korea. Despite the site classification method was improved, the response spectrum would be required to be modified by adjusting the integration interval to calculate the site coefficients because the response spectra did not match well the average spectral accelerations obtained by site response analyses in the range of long periods. In this paper, new response spectra for each site categories were determined by adjusting the integration interval of long period site coefficient $F_v\;from\;0.4{\sim}2.0\;to\;0.4{\sim}1.5$ second. It matched well the average spectral accelerations and new response spectrum, and it was also improved compared to the current she classification system.

  • Longitudinal strain is an important component of seismic design for buried pipelines. A design procedure which determines the wavelength from site natural period and shear wave velocity of the soil layer and closed-form solutions of pipelines under a harmonic motion is typically used in design. However, the applicability of the procedure has not yet been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, displacement-time histories extracted from 1D site response analyses are used in 3D shell-spring model to accurately predict the response of pipelines. The results are closely compared to those from the design procedure. The area of interest is East Siberia. Performing a site response analysis to determine site specific displacement time history is highlighted. The site natural period may be used to predict the predominant period of the acceleration time history, but cannot be used to estimate the predominant period of the displacement time history. If an accurate estimate of the predominant period of the displacement time history is provided, it is demonstrated that the design equation can be successfully used to predict the response of pipelines.

  • In our previous studies, it was found that activities of maternal peripheral lymphocytes and thymocytes were depressed during the implantation period in rats and rabbits. This study was therefore attempted to clarify further this immunosuppression locally by determining lymphocyte response in lymph nodes draining the uterus (DLN) and to elucidate the mechanism by which prostaglandin E (PGE) modulates immune response during the implantation process in rats. As compared with non-pregnant rats, the response of DLN lymphocytes to concanavalin A (Con A) was depressed during the implantation period in 100% of rats studied. The activity of DLN lymphocytes depressed on day 8 of pregnancy was, however, restored partially by the treatment of indomethacin (ID), indicating that prostaglandin (PG) might be one of factors responsible for immunomodulation during the process of implantation. DLN lymphocyte activity in non-pregnant rats was suppressed if PGE was pre-treated prior to Con A and this suppression was partially restored by the treatment of ID. Furthermore, DLN lymphocytes pre-treated with PGE produced PGE in vitro and this PGE production was blocked by the treatment of ID, suggesting that PGE induced PGE-producing cells. However, the pretreatment of estradiol, progesterone, and hCG at doses enough to suppress lymphocyte activity was ineffective in inducing PGE-producing cells. From these results, it is suggested that PGE induces PGE-producing suppressor cells, thereby increasing PGE concentration and PGE in turn depresses maternal local immune response as well as systemic immune response during the implantation period in rats.

  • We determined the maternal peripheral lymphocyte response to mitogen during the period of implantation and evaluated the effects of hormones, which are known to be involved in the process of implantation, on the lymphocyte activity in rabbits. As compared with peripheral lymphocyte activity in non-pregnant rabbits, lymphocyte activity was significantly depressed on days 6, 7 and 9 of pregnancy. Although concentrations of serum progesterone were gradually increased during the implantation period, progesterone did not inhibit lymphocyte activity at physiological concentration. Serum $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ was significantly increased on day 7 while PGE was slightly increased. $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ did not modify lymphocyte activity even with greater concentrations than physiological level. However, lymphocyte activity was significantly inhibited by PGE even with physiological doses. The treatment of indomethacin at doses of 0.1 or $1.0\;{\mu}g/ml$ tended to enhance lymphocyte response, which was depressed on day 8 of pregnancy, 28% or 23% respectively. Although in non-pregnant rabbit, enhancement of lymphocyte response was also shown after the treatment of indomethacin, this enhancement was much less than that in pregnant rabbits. These results strongly suggest that maternal immune response was depressed during the process of implantation and PGE might be one of factors for immunomodulation during this period.

  • Captive breeding and reintroduction are crucial strategies for conserving endangered species populations. However, fish raised in predator-free environments, show a lack of recognition of predationrelated stimuli such as chemical and visual signals. It is critical to recognize chemical signals from injured conspecifics, also known as alarm signals, and the order or shape of predators to indicate the spread of predation risk in the habitat. We conducted a laboratory experiment to determine and adjust the optimal exposure period to induce appropriate anti-predator behavior response to different types of stimuli (Chemical, Visual and Chemical+Visual) for the endangered species Microphysogobio rapidus. Our results demonstrate that predator avoidance behavior varies depending on the types of stimuli and the duration of predation risk exposure. First, the results showed captive-breed M. rapidus show lack of response against conspecific alarm signal (Chemical cue) before the predation risk exposure period and tend to increase response over predation risk exposure time. Second, response to predator (visual cue) tend to peak at 48 hours cumulative exposure, but show dramatic decrease after 72 hours cumulative exposure. Finally, response to the mixed cue (Chemical+visual) tend to peak prior to the predation risk exposure period and show reduced response during subsequent exposure periods. This experiment confirms the lack of responsiveness to conspecific alarm signals in captive-bred M. rapidus and the need for an optimal nature behavior enhancement program prior to release of endangered species. Furthermore, responsiveness to predator visual signal peak at 48 hours cumulative exposure, suggest an optimal predation risk exposure period of up to 48 hours.

  • Purpose: This study was done to investigate the effects of an infant massage on physical growth and stress response in preterm babies. Method: A nonequivalent control group with pre-posttest design was used with 56 preterm babies in the NICU of E medical center at Daejeon. Data were collected from July 2004 to May 2005. The intervention was given for 15 minutes, once a day for 7 days. Physical growth was measured by weight, length, head circumference, and stress response was measured by serum cortisol level. Mean, %, paired-test, t-test with the SPSS/W in 16.0 program were used to analyze the data. Results: After the intervention, physical growth variables (weight, length, head circumference) in experimental group were higher than that of the control group. Also, the serum cortisol level in the experimental group was lower than that of the control group. But none of these results were not statistically significant. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that a 7-day intervention period may not be long enough to confirm the effects of infant massage on physical growth and stress reaction. Therefore it is suggested that a longer period of infant massage should be tested to determine if it is effective in improving the physical growth and stress reduction in preterm babies.

  • This paper studied on the response characteristics depending on service life of ionization smoke detector. The experimental samples used ionization smoke detectors (360 EA) for over 5 years which were influenced by environment set up with fire objects. The experimental method performed operate and non-operate test according to 'Type Approval and Technical Regulation of Detector (KOFEIS 0301)', for estimate the response characteristics of ionization smoke detector depending on service life. The results showed that their response characteristics were rapidly decreasing when the longer their using period. Accordingly, it is desirable that ionization smoke detector has to be changed for early fire detection when passed their service life.

  • This paper proposes the DC offset compensation algorithm with fast response to the sensed grid voltage in the single-phase grid connected inverter. If the sensor of the grid voltage has problems, the DC offset of the grid voltage can be generated. This error must be resolved because the DC offset can generate the estimated grid frequency error of the phase-locked loop (PLL). In conventional algorithm to compensate the DC offset, the DC offset is estimated by integrating the synchronous reference frame d-axis voltage during one period of the grid voltage. The conventional algorithm has a drawback that is a slow dynamic response because monitoring the one period of the grid voltage is required. the proposed algorithm has fast dynamic response because the DC offset is consecutively estimated by transforming the d-axis voltage to synchronous reference frame without monitoring one cycle time of the grid voltage. The proposed algorithm is verified from PSIM simulation and the experiment.
