Dynamic equilibrium equations for finite element analysis were derived for the free field one-dimensional shear wave propagation through the horizontally layered soil deposits with the elastic half-space. We expressed Rayleigh's viscous damping consisting of mass and stiffness proportional terms. We considered two cases where damping matrices are defined in the total and relative displacement fields. Two forms of equilibrium equations are presented; one in terms of total motions and the other in terms of relative motions. To evaluate the performance of new equilibrium equations, we conducted two sets of site response analyses and directly compared them with the exact closed-form frequency domain solution. Results show that the base shear force as earthquake load represents the simpler form of equilibrium equation to be used for the finite element method. Conventional finite element procedure using base acceleration as earthquake load predicts exact solution reasonably well even in soil deposits with unrealistically high damping.

In addition to the Young's modulus, the Poisson's ratio is also at the center of attention in the field stochastic finite element analysis since the parameters play an important role in determining structural behavior. Accordingly, the sole effect of this parameter on the response variability is of importance from the perspective of estimation of uncertain response. To this end, a formulation to determine the response variability in laminate composite plates due to the spatial randomness of Poisson's ratio is suggested. The independent contributions of random Poisson's ratiocan be captured in terms of sub-matrices which include the effect of the random parameter in the same order, which can be attained by using the Taylor's series expansion about the mean of the parameter. In order to validate the adequacy of the proposed formulation, several example analyses are performed, and then the results are compared with Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). A good agreement between the suggested scheme and MCS is observed showing the adequacy of the scheme.
A stud has been carried out for figuring out real photon spectrum from an observed gamma-ray spectrum by means of response matrix method, which is known one of the relatively convenient method for the estimation of exposure rate of a complex gamma ray field in comparison with graphical analysis and least square fitting of the measured spectrum. A 3'${\times}$3' cylindrical Nal(T1) scintillation detector in association with multichannel pulse height analyzer and six reference gamma ray sources covering the photon energy range of 0.05 to 2.0 MeV were used. In dividing the energy region for the construction of response matrix, two different approaches were attempted. One is dividing the entire energy region of interest into 20 bins, one of which corresponds to a width of 0.1 MeV to form $20{\times}20$ matrix, and another is dividing the 2 MeV region into 14 bins to form $14{\times}14$ matrix consists of $0.1(MeV)^{1/2}$ intervals assuming the resolution of the detector is dependent on square root of the incident photon energy. Inversion of thus constructed matrices was performed by a computor(P-E8/32) using the program attached to the end of this paper. The resultant exposure rates obtained by this method were in good agreement, within 10% with those calculated by ordinary formula widely used for a gamma-ray field of known energy and flux. It is concluded that the photen flux obtained by the response matrix constructed under the assumption of $E^{1/2}$ dependence is more realistic than that obtained by the matrix consist of identical energy bins in dosimetrical point of view.
This paper deals with noise suppression of multi-channel data captured by microphone array using multi-channel Wiener filter. Multi-channel Wiener filter does not rely on information about the direction of the target speech and can be partitioned into an MVDR (Minimum Variance Distortionless Response) spatial filter and a single channel spectral filter. The acoustic transfer function between the single speech source and microphones can be estimated by subspace decomposition of multi-channel Wiener filter. The errors are incurred in the estimation of the acoustic transfer function due to the errors in the estimation of correlation matrices, which in turn results in speech distortion in the MVDR filter. To alleviate the speech distortion in the MVDR filter, diagonal loading is applied. In the experiments, database with seven microphones was used and MFCC distance was measured to demonstrate the effectiveness of the diagonal loading.

Organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel matrices were used as hosts for chloro (5, 10, 15, 20-tetraphenylporphyrinato) cobalt (III) (Co[TPP]Cl), a known ionophore for nitrite. The sol-gel precursor was prepared by the reaction of (3-isocyanopropyl) triethoxysilane with 1,4-butanediol. An appropriate amount of the anion-exchanger, tridodecylmethylammonium chloride (TDMAC) and the plasticizer, tributylphosphate (DBP) were used as membrane additives. On mixing with an acidic catalyst, the sol-state precursors slowly gelled, yielding a membrane in which the active components, Co[TPP]Cl and TDMAC, were encapsulated. The performances of the sol-gel membrane-based electrodes were compared to those of Co[TPP]Cl-based poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane electrodes. Membranes with a molar ratio of Co[TPP]Cl: TDMAC (1 : 0.1) showed reasonable response slopes toward nitrite. The response slopes were typically 53 mV/decade between $10^{-5.4}$ and $10^{-1.0}\;M$. Selectivities toward nitrite over hydrophilic and small anions such as chloride were somewhat inferior to those observed with PVC-based membranes, but selectivities over lipophilic anions were quite similar. Reduced asymmetry potentials due to protein adsorption were found to occur with the sol-gel matrix relative to PVC-based films when the sensors were employed as a detector in flow-through configuration.

The finite element method(FEM) is the most widely used and powerful method for structural analysis. In general, in order to analyze complex and large structures, we have used the FEM. However, it is necessary to use a large amount of computer memory and computation time for solving accurately by the FEM the dynamic problem of a system with many degree-of-freedom, because the FEM has to deal with very large matrices in this case. Therefore, it was very difficult to analyze the vibration for plate structures with a large number of degrees of freedom by the FEM on a personal computer. For overcoming this disadvantage of the FEM without the loss of the accuracy, the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method(FE-TSCM) was developed. The concept of the FE-TSCM is based on the combination of modeling technique in the FEM and the transfer technique in the transfer stiffness coefficient method(TSCM). The merit of the FE-TSCM is to take the advantages of both methods, that is, the convenience of the modeling in the FEM and the computation efficiency of the TSCM. In this paper, the forced vibration analysis algorithm of plate structures is formulated by the FE-TSCM. In order to illustrate the accuracy and the efficiency of the FE-TSCM, results of frequency response analysis for a rectangular plate, which was adopted as a computational model, were compared with those by the modal analysis method and the direct analysis method which are based on the FEM.

In this paper, we present a modeling scheme for the already-installed two-wire home phone lines with arbitrary topologies and show that the inter-symbol interference due to the topology can be removed using an adaptive equalizer. The transmission characteristics of the arbitrary-configured two-wire home phone lines can be analyzed through the ABCD matrices. The simulation result shows that the impedance mismatch due to the branch lines renders nulls in the frequency response or delayed pulses in the impulse response. These nulls or delayed pulses cause inter-symbol interference that inhibits correct signal detection. An adaptive equalizer is shown to be effective in eliminating the interference. Also, the simulation result shows that the equalizer converges in 1.5 ms at a data rate of 1 Msps at signal-to-noise ratios greater than 15 dB. In addition, from the result of relation between E$\_$b//N$\_$and BER(Bit Error Rate), we can see that E$\_$b//N$\_$o/ more than 19 dB is required for the data communication with a BER less than 10$\^$-5/.

This paper presents a hybrid system combining lead rubber bearings and hydraulic actuators controlled by a $\mu-synthesis$ method for seismic response control of a cable-stayed bridge. A hybrid system could alleviate some of restrictions and limitations that exist when each system is acting alone because multiple control devices are operating. Therefore, the overall control performance of a hybrid system may be improved compared to each system, however the overall system robustness may be negatively impacted by active device in the hybrid system or active controller may cause instability due to small margins. Therefore, a $\mu-synthesis$ method that guarantees the robust performance is considered to enhance the possibility of real applications of the control system. The performances of the proposed control system are compared with those of passive, active, semiactive control systems and hybrid system controlled by a LQG algorithm. Furthermore, an extensive robust analysis with respect to stiffness and mass matrices perturbation and time delay of actuator is performed. Numerical simulation results show that the performances of the proposed control system are superior to those of passive system and slightly better than those of active and semiactive systems and two hybrid systems show similar control performances. Furthermore, the hybrid system controlled by a f-synthesis method shows the good robustness without loss of control performances. Therefore, the proposed control system could effectively be used to seismically excited cable-stayed bridge which contains many uncertainties.
In this paper, liquid sloshing effects in rectangular storage structures for spent fuel under earthquake loadings are investigated. Eulerian and Lagrangian approaches are presented. The Eulerian approach is carried out by solving the boundary value problem for the fluid motion. In the Lagrangian approach, the fluid as well as the storage structure is modelled by the finite element method. The fluid region is discretized by using fluid elements. The (1*1)-reduced integration is carried out for constructing the stiffness matrices of the fluid elements. Seismic analysis of the coupled system is carried out by the response spectra method. The numerical results show that the fluid forces on the wall obtained by two approaches are in good agreements. By including the effect of the wall flexibility, the hydrodynamic forces due to fluid motion can be increased very significantly.

In this paper, complex quadruplet zeros of microwave filter systems are investigated. For the cascaded systems the chain matrices are most conveniently used to derive the voltage transfer function of Laplace transform with cascaded two-port subsystems. The convenient relations of transfer function and chain matrix are used in order to find the transmission zeros. Starting from a ladder network, we introduced a crossed-coupled lumped element, in order to show the improved response of bandpass filter. By solving the transmission zero characteristic equation derived from the cascaded subsystems, we found the zeros of filter system with externally cross-coupled lumped elements. With the cross-coupled elements of capacitors, the numerator polynomial of system transfer function is used to locate the quadruplet zeros in complex plane. When the two pairs of double are on the zeros -axis, with the perturbed values of element, we learned that the transition band of lowpass filter is improved. By solving the characteristic equation of cascaded transfer function, we can obtain the zeros of the cross-coupled filter system, as a result of perturbed values on lumped element.
