In this paper, a new stacked element pressure sensor has proposed for heartbeat and respiration measurement. This device can be directly attached to an individual's chest; heartbeat and respiration are detected by the pulsatile vibration and deformation of the chest. A key feature of the device is the simultaneous measurement of heart rate and respiration. The structure of the sensor consists of two stacked elements, in which one element includes one polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) thin film bonded on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. In addition, for the measurement and signal processing, the electric circuit and the filter are simply constructed with an OP-amp, resistance, and a capacitor. One element (element1, PDMS) maximizes the respiration signal; the other (element2, PVDF) is used to measure heartbeat. Element1 and element2 had sensitivity of 0.163V/N and 0.209V/N, respectively, and element2 showed improved characteristics compared with element1 in response to force. Thus, element1 and element2 were optimized for measuring respiration heart rate, respectively. Through mechanical and vivo human tests, this sensor shows the great potential to optimize the signals of heartbeat and respiration compared with commercial devices. Moreover, the proposed sensor is flexible, light weight, and low cost. All of these characteristics illustrate an effective piezoelectric pressure sensor for heartbeat and respiration measurements.
Respiration is the process of moving air into and out of the lung. Respiration changes the temperature in the chamber while exchanging energy. Especially the temperature of the face. Respiration monitoring using an infrared camera measures the temperature change caused by breathing. The conventional method assumes that motion is not considered and measures respiration. These assumptions can not accurately measure the respiration rate when breathing moves. In addition, the respiration rate measurement is performed by counting the number of peaks of the breathing waveform by displaying the position of the peak in a specific window, and there is a disadvantage that the breathing rate can not be measured accurately. In this paper, we use KLT tracking and block matching to calibrate limited weak movements during breathing and extract respiration waveform. In order to increase the accuracy of the respiration rate, the position of the peak used in the breath calculation is calculated by converting from a single point to a high resolution. Through this process, the respiration signal could be extracted even in weak motion, and the respiration rate could be measured robustly even in various time windows.
This paper describes a multi channel measurement system which can measure the cellular respiration level in a solution containing cells by using a Clark-type sensor with the solution temperature control unit. The Clark-type sensor can measure the cellular respiration level in the solution because it can measure the reduction current depending on the dissolved oxygen level in the solution. This measurement system was maintained the temperature within ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$ of the setting temperature value by on/off control method in order to measure the precise cellular respiration level. The measurement system showed that the applied voltage to the working electrode was very stable(-0.8 V$\pm$ 0.0071 V) by using proportional control method. From the current measurement, the response time and the linearity correlation coefficient were 25 sec and 0.94, respectively, which are very close to the results of the commercial product. Using this system and the fabricated Clarktype sensor, the average ratio of the uncoupled OCR(oxygen consumption rate) to the coupled OCR was 1.35 and this is almost the same as that obtained from a commercial systems.
A Doppler radar sensor was applied to detect respirations and heartbeats of persons who were lying on a bed. This study is preliminary study aiming at non-contact and non-intrusive respiration and heart rate monitoring during sleep in daily life. For the experiments, 10GHz Doppler radar with patch-type antenna was used and installed on the upper right and the distance between the body and the antenna was 1 m. The results show that each signal of respiration and heartbeat is observed in each frequency band however the frequency band and the waveform vary according to the subjects and the posture. The results show that the heartbeats can be detected with the peak detection in some frequency band. This study shows the feasibility of applying the Doppler radar to detection of heartbeat and respiration during sleep and further studies about heartbeat detection algorithm are required.
A respiration is one of the most useful techniques for vital checking and an abnormal respiration is often the earliest sign of critical illness. Detection of respiration is based on the photo-plethysmography (PPG) with photodiode technique. Because PPG sensor using photodiode can be easily miniaturized, it is suitable for wearable devices. A system to measure respiration rate based on PPG signal is implemented and for a reliable measurement an improved algorithm in accuracy using PPG signal pattern is proposed in this paper. As results regarding to three types of respirations (regular interval, free interval, and weak respiration) the proposed algorithm showed error rate of 0.047, 0.067, and 0.122 respectively.
Voice is made by systemic interaction of respiration, vocalization, articulation and resonation. There is no existing multi-channel voice analysis system to assess voice and respiration simultaneously. The most existing systems consist of. vocal fold vibration measurement such as stroboscopy, EGG (electroglottography) or laryngeal electromyography and voice analysis system. Since respiration has close relationship with voice simultaneous analysis of both vocal cord vibration and respiration are essential. In this study, a four channel integrated system are developed for acoustic analysis through microphone, vocal fold vibratory analysis using EGG, and respiratory analysis using two channel RIP (respiratory inductive plethysmography).
Respiration measurement method using an ultrasound sensor is influenced very little by an error of inertia and pressure. This device measures the amount and flow of respiration using a delivery speed difference of the ultrasound waves that are a return format by the pneumatic stream that is a flogging of ultrasound waves during transmission and receipt as having used a characteristic of ultrasound waves. This paper examines improving the sensor's sensitivity during transmission and receipt of the signal. Because the measurement must be performed on patients, clinicians need to be sure that it is accurately measuring even very weak breathing.
In this paper, a respiration measurement method using FMCW signal for off-the-shelf smartphone is presented and investigated. The proposed algorithm transmits FMCW signal periodically instead of transmitting continuously so that one can reduce the power consumption from speaker in smartphone and the algorithm complexity. In order to eliminate the clicking noise generated when transmitting FMCW signal, Tukey window with ${\alpha}=0.01$ is applied to prevent the noise from being heard. An application program for Android OS which can transmit FMCW signal through speaker and record the reflected signals through MIC has been developed. Since the total duration of the signal transmission is set to 20msec per 1 second for the experiments, the power consumption can be decreased by 80% compared to the continuous transmission. It was confirmed that the clicking noise is inaudible as long as a smartphone is located at more than 10cm from ears. In the experiments on a sleeping child, the breathing signal of about 0.27Hz was measured.
