  • The Land Use Suitability Assessment System was recently introduced by the $\ulcorner$Act on Planning and Utilization of the National Territory$\lrcorner$ to use, manage, and develop the national territory, which integrated the National Land Use and Management Act and the Urban Planning Act. It provides a guideline for classifying land use into 5 classes according to locational characteristics, usability, and developmental conditions of land in the vicinity. The database is constructed with LMIS cadastral data, posted land price data, and data of related agencies such as the Korea Forest Service, the Ministry of Environment, and the Korea Water Resources Corporation etc. After the database construction, individual parcels are analysed by steps and classified into 3 sub areas - conservation, agriculture, and development using GIS. In this paper we evaluate land use suitability for individual parcels by constructing the Land Use Suitability Assessment System for Jinju city. Therefore, we suggest that this system provides vital data in the urban management planning process.

  • In the evaluation of rural amenities, its properties are related with social, cultural, and environmental elements. In this study, Information Measure Model (IMM) and Cultural Property Priority Assessment Model (CPPAM) were developed adapting information measure model with text based surveying data. To apply developed model not only general properties but also specific surveyed data, Specific Information Gathering and Utilizing System (SIGUS) was constructed using the data in Dusan World encyclopedia. IMM shows priorities of cultural property by information in national-designated cultural properties. And CPPAM applied in surveying data in 2004 by Rural Resources Development Institute.

  • NASA, NSF and USGS jointly conducted LIDAR surveys to acquire numerous surface points with high densities over the Antarctic Dry Valleys and its vicinity. The huge set of the points unusually includes many blunders, retaining large variation of the point densities. Hence, to reduce the undesirable effects due to these characteristics and process the huge number of points with reasonable time and resources, we developed an efficient, robust, nearly automatic approach to DEM generation. This paper reports about the application of this approach to generating high-resolution precise DEMs from the Antarctic LIDAR surveys and the evaluation of their accuracy.

  • A karst collapse, as a natural hazard, is totally different to a normal collapse. In recent years, karst collapses have caused substantial economic losses and even threatened human safety. A risk assessment model for karst collapse was developed based on the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) and grey relational analysis (GRA), which is a simple and effective mathematical algorithm. An evaluation index played an important role in the process of completing the risk assessment model. In this study, the proposed model was applied to Jiaobai village in southwest China. First, the main controlling factors were summarized as an evaluation index of the model based on an investigation and statistical analysis of the natural formation law of karst collapse. Second, the FAHP was used to determine the relative weights and GRA was used to calculate the grey relational coefficient among the indices. Finally, the relational sequence of evaluation objects was established by calculating the grey weighted relational degree. According to the maximum relational rule, the greater the relational degree the better the relational degree with the hierarchy set. The results showed that the model accurately simulated the field condition. It is also demonstrated the contribution of various control factors to the process of karst collapse and the degree of collapse in the study area.

  • The objective of this study is in investigating the research for more accurately quantify the information on mountain forest by using the data on high density LiDAR. For the quantitative analysis of mountain forest resources, we investigated the method to acquire the data on high density LiDAR and extract mountain forest resources. Consequently, the height and girth of a tree each mountain forest resources could be extracted by using the data on high density LiDAR. When using the data on low density LiDAR of 2.5points/m2 in average used to produce digital map, it was difficult to extract the exact height and girth of mountain forest resources. If using the data on high density LiDAR of 7points/m2 by considering topography, the property of mountain forest resources, data capacity and process velocity, etc, it was found that multitudinous entities could be extracted. It was found that mountain topography and mixed topography were generally denser than plane topography and multitudinous mountain forest resources could be extracted. Furthermore, it was also found that the entity at the border could not be extracted, when each partition was individually processed and the area should be subdivided and extracted by considering the process time and property of target area rather than processing wide area at once. We expect to be studied more profoundly the absorption quantity of greenhouse gas later by using information on mountain forest resources in the future.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of forest road on the suspended sediment yield into a stream in the small forest watershed. The samples of suspended sediment yield were collected at surveying points A and B in mountains watersheds unaffected by forest road, and at surveying point C affected by forest road. When hourly change of suspended sediment concentration was investigated, it showed the highest increase along the forest road, and the peak of suspended sediment concentration due to the watershed characteristics of each surveying point occurred before or at the same time with, the peak of discharge. This may be due to the time lag in which stagnated unstable suspended sediment moved strongly upon rainfall. Although suspended sediment load varied depending upon rainfall factors and surveying period, suspended sediment load per unit watershed flowed out 4.1 times more at the point C than at the point A and B. The suspended sediment load on 18~19 September, 1998, strongly affected by rainfall factors, was 4.179g/sec/㏊ at the point C, and 0.343g/sec/㏊ and 0.147g/sec/㏊ at the point A and B, respectively. This load was 12 times higher at the point C than at the point A and 28 times higher than at the point B.

  • Coastal erosion and its impact on human activities as well as the economic damage and environmental conservation of coastal area is one of major concern in the national policies. In this study, we conducted physical investigations to evaluate effects of erosion in the Geojin beach, which is located nearby the Geojin Port, for a detecting of shoreline change and beach cross-sectional area. The results showed that significant coastal erosion of the Geojin beach has occurred by the complex resources of natural factor, such as rising sea level, storm surges, high wave, and man-made construction. Especially, due to the sand supplement from Jasan river, the section which is nearby the estuary of Jasan river is maintained as a stable beach, whereas beach erosion of the other site in GW04 section has been increased indeed. Therefore, we suggest that it is need to continuous monitoring using DGPS and various surveying techniques to prevent beach erosion onto the GW04 section.

  • This study performed an on-site demonstration of the topographic surveying technique at a large-scale open-pit limestone mine in Korea using a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV, Drone, SenseFly eBee). 288 sheets of aerial photos were taken by an automatic flight for 30 minutes under conditions of 300 m altitude and 12 m/s speed. Except for 37 aerial photos in which no keypoint was detected, 251 aerial photos were utilized for data processing including correction and matching, then an orthomosaic image and digital surface model with 7 cm grid spacing could be generated. A comparison of the X, Y, Z-coordinates of 4 ground control points measured by differential global positioning system and those determined by fixed-wing UAV photogrammetry revealed that the root mean squared errors were around 15 cm. Because the fixed-wing UAV has relatively longer flight time and larger coverage area than rotary-wing UAVs, it can be effectively utilized in large-scale open-pit mines as a topographic surveying tool.

  • To determine the precise geoid, the quality land gravity data as well as the accurate position information of the observation points are required. Here, the land gravity data should be processed in a consistent way from the raw data level producing the quality free-air anomaly being used in the geoid determination. In this study, we processed land gravity data of KIGAM(Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) and Pusan national university which has precise position information acquired from GPS and raw gravity data. The conversion from readings of gravimeter to the gravity value, corrections of instrumental height and tide were carried out from the raw gravity data for each surveying session. Then, a cross-over adjustment was applied to generate a free-air anomaly for whole data with precision of 0.48 mGal. It is expected that the data processed through this study shall be a foundation on the determination of the precise geoid model in Korea.
