  • Ground subsidence in urban areas due to excessive development and degraded underground facilities is a serious problem. Geophysical surveys have been conducted to estimate the distribution and scale of cavities and subsidence. In this study, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) was performed near an area of road subsidence in an urban area. The subsidence arose due to groundwater leakage that carried soil into a neighboring excavation site. The ERT survey line was located between the main subsidence area and an excavation site. Because ERT data are affected by rapid topographic changes and surrounding structures, the influence of the excavation site on the data was analyzed through field-scale numerical modeling. The effect of an excavation should be considered when interpreting ERT data because it can lead to wrong anomalous results. A method for performing 2D inversion after correcting resistivity data for the effect of the excavation site was proposed. This method was initially tested using a field-scale numerical model that included the excavation site and subsurface anomaly, which was a loosened zone, and was then applied to field data. In addition, ERT data were interpreted using an existing in-house 3D algorithm, which considered the effect of excavation sites. The inversion results demonstrated that conductive anomalies in the loosened zone were greater compared to the inversion that did not consider the effects of excavation.

  • Through enrichment on two nutrient agars, 57 Thermus isolates were recovered from 15 hot spring samples taken from the Rehai geothermal area, Tengchong, China. Unique growth characteristics were observed when the strains were transferred from YIM14 medium to Thermus medium. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the 16S rDNA sequences of the isolates and clones from the Rehai geothermal area farmed a monophyletic group on the phylogenetic tree. A secondary structure comparison showed that their 16S rRNAs have unique secondary structure characteristics.

  • Personal value and lifestyle have been regarded as the common factors in many studies of the destination selection. And the evaluations by visitors or tourists of certain destinations have been conducted in many respects. Based on those influential factors and measures from the review of the previous researches, this article considers the impact of residents' evaluation of the tourism resources in their own resident area on selecting destinations of their future overseas trips as well as their personal value and lifestyle. This article is aimed to reveal whether the impact exists, and if so, to what extent this impact can expand. According to the result, perception of tourism resources in residential area has impact on preferred destination, although its impact was relatively less than those of personal value and lifestyle. The more highly perceived the tourism resources are found, the more preferred tourist destination with abundant tourism attractions are. And the lowly perceived the cost of living in residential area is found, the more preferred the consumption-oriented tourist destinations are. It would be helpful for the product developers like travel agents or product marketers to know and predict the tendency of people s present evaluation of their areas and the future destination selection tendency for their trips.

  • The probability of landslide hazards was predicted to natural terrain around the stone relics of Jinjeon-saji area, which is located in Yangyang, Kangwon Province. As the analysis results of field investigation, laboratory test and geology and geomorphology data, the effect factors of landslides occurrence were evaluated, and then the landslides prediction map was made up by use of prediction model considering the effect factors. The susceptibility of stone relics induced by landslides was investigated as the grading classification of occurrence probability using the landslides prediction map. In the landslides prediction map, the high probability area of landslides over 70% of occurrence probability was 3,489m3, which was 10.1% of total prediction area. If landslides are occurred at the high elevation area, the three stories stone pagoda of Jinjeon-saji (National treasure No.122) and the stone lantern of Jinjeon-saji (Treasure No.439) will be collapsed by debris flow.

  • To examine species composition, abundance and biomass of demersal organisms in the East Sea, bottom trawl survey was conducted at 7 sea areas from 2005 to 2007. A total of 107 species were collected and were composed of 54 fish species, 16 crustacea, and 37 mollusks in the East Sea from 2005 to 2007. Yearly abundance per area which caught by trawl survey in the East Sea from 2005 to 2007 ranged from a high of $292,234inds./km^2$ in 2005 to a low of $192,092inds./km^2$ in 2006. The abundance by sea area showed a peak in 76 sea area, and the lowest in 63 sea area. The abundance per area by season showed a peak in summer, and the lowest in spring. The most dominant species in abundance were Clupea pallasii, Neocrangon communis, Chionoecetes opilio. Yearly biomass per area which caught by trawl survey in the East Sea from 2005 to 2007 ranged from a high of $10,322kg/km^2$ in 2006 to a low of $7,096kg/km^2$ in 2005. The most dominant species in biomass were Chionoecetes opilio, Clupea pallasii, Dasycottus setiger. The biomass by sea area also showed a peak in 76 sea area, and the lowest in 93 sea area. The abundance by season also showed a peak in summer, and the lowest in spring. As a result of cluster analysis, demersal organisms community of 76 sea area showed a large difference with other sea area, and that of summer showed a large difference with other season.

  • The cooling effect of paddy fields was compared with those of other land-use areas (upland, urban park, and urban residential area) during midsummer. The temperature were monitored using data logger at one hour intervals in study sites. Diurnal temperature range of study areas in clear days was larger than in cloudy days. Also, diurnal temperature ranges in paddy field, upland, and park areas were larger than those in the urban residential area during clear days. The paddy field or upland area has shown more remarkable cooling effect compared to urban residential areas: Mean duration of temperature below $25^{\circ}C$ in the paddy field area is longer(7 to 8 hours) than in the residential area; The time to fall to below $25^{\circ}C$ in the paddy field area is sooner than in the residential area; Mean daily minimum temperature in the paddy field area is much lower than in the residential area.

  • The intake tower of D-dam located in a mountainous area positioned in the left side of the dam and its structure installed alone on the water surface then, can become target of direct lightening. To protect the intake tower from the direct lightening and indirect-lightening, lightening rod installed in the top area of the intake tower and ground pole laid under the surrounding ground. however, because the surrounding ground almost consists of a rock, it is very difficult to obtain the grounding resistance. It is main object to examine the construction plan of the optimum lightening rod equipment and ground pole with measuring the earth specific resistance of the around of the intake tower which is the scheduled area to lay the ground pole with the Wenner's 4-electric pole method and the Schlumberger's method. and using the analysis tool, ESII.

  • For analyzing the distribution of chromite, magnetic survey was carried out on the chromium mineralized belt in Bophi Vum area, northwestern Myanmar. As a result, the magnetic susceptibility of chromite is lower than those of dunite and harzburgite, which are background rocks of chromite. Also, the locations of low magnetic anomaly zone and low magnetic susceptibility models of 3D magnetic inversion result are spatially well matched with those of chromite occurrences confirmed by the surface geological survey and trench survey. Some of low magnetic effects are expanded to the periphery area of chromite occurrences. Considering the magnetic susceptibility characteristics of various rocks in this area, the expanded low magnetic anomaly zones are estimated as the high potential areas bearing chromite. For confirming the potential area of chromite pointed by coarse magnetic survey, the additional detail exploration need to be carried out in future.
