The purpose of this study was to identify the state of demersal fish resource catch by small trawlers, which live in the southern waters off Goheung. We investigated the results of catch of sample fishing vessels, and performed fishing experiments using the actual fishing operation vessels from early November in 2002 till end of October in 2003. The daily amount of catch per vessel of the 35 small trawlers selected as sample vessels was the highest in summer seasons(June and July) as 70kg and the lowest in winter seasons(January and February) as 45kg and Octopus minor occupied as 17 to 30kg nearly 30% of the total catch. Additionally the catch of Octopus minor per vessel, per dragging hour ranges 3 to 6kg, which is the highest in March and June and the low in January to February, April to May and September. In the fishing experiments using small trawler, during the study period, a total of 75 fish species were collected. The number of individuals by species consisted 58.2% in Shrimps, 17.8% in Fish, 2.3% in Cephalopod. Of these, Parapenaeopsis tenella was the highest in 29.2%, Squilla oratoria and Crangon hakodatel was 14.6% respectively and Octopus minor was 0.2% of the total number of individuals. As far as the appearance number of individuals by month was concerned, February was the highest and then May, April and June followed in order, and October showed the lowest. Additionally the monthly catch per dragging was the lowest in December to January as 20kg and the highest in July as 160kg. Specially, Octopus minor was caught throughout the year regardless of season and the catch was the highest at the period from March to June. When looking into the body mean length of dominant fishes caught, we could observe the followings; Trachurus japonicus 8.9cm, Cynoglossus robustus 10.8cm, Muraenesox cinereus 15.3cm, Setipinna taty 10.3cm, Amblchaeturichfhys hexanema 9.3 cm and Collichthys niveatus 8.9cm, most of which were in their immaturity when they were caught.

Changes of sex steroid hormones in the plasma of yellowfin goby, Acanthogobius flavimanus were investigated in relation to the gonadosomatic index (GSI), the hepatosomatic index (HSI) and gonadal development. The GSI in females rose rapidly in November and remained high from December to May $(7.26\pm0.896.62\pm0.02)$. The Male's GSI also increased gradually from November and was highest in May $(0.16\pm0.08)$. The HSI in both sexes was in reverse correlation with the GSI, and the HSI was low during the spawning season (February-May). In females, the $estradiol-17{\beta}\;(E_2)$ level increased during vitellogenesis (November and December) and reached its maximum $(8.13\pm2.87 ng/mL)$ at the maturing period, in January. $17{\alpha},\;20{\beta}$-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one$(17{\alpha}20{\beta}OHP)$ gradually increased from October $(0.063{\pm}0.02ng/mL)$ to March $(0.16{\pm}0.02ng/mL)$ and increased rapidly in May. The level of testosterone (T) showed a similar tendency of $E_2$. In males, T increased gradually during spermatogenesis from September to December $(0.14{\pm}0.060.26{\pm}0.10ng/mL)$ and peaked in January $(0.36{\pm}0.29 ng/mL)$ when the spermatozoa filled the testis. 11-KT also rose markedly in January and then decreased. On the other hand, $17{\alpha}29{\beta}OHP$ in males did not show any clear tendencies.
The extent of change in the Land use/Land cover (LULC) of Okomu National Park (ONP) and fringe communities was evaluated. High resolution Landsat imagery was used to identify the major vegetation cover/land use systems and changes around the national park and fringe communities while field visits/ground truthing, involving the collection of coordinates of the locations was carried out to ascertain the various land cover/land use types identified on the images, and the extent of change over three-time series (2000, 2010 and 2020). The change detection was analyzed using area calculation, change detection by nature and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The result of the classification and analysis of the LULC Change of ONP and fringe communities revealed an alarming rate of encroachment into the protected area. All the classification features analyzed had notable changes from 2000-2020. The forest, which was the dominant LULC feature in 2000, covering about 66.19% of the area reduced drastically to 36.12% in 2020. Agricultural land increased from 6.14% in 2000 to 34.06% in 2020 while vegetation (degraded land) increased from 27.18% in 2000 to 38.89% in 2020. The magnitude of the change in ONP and surroundings showed the forest lost -247.136 km2 (50.01%) to other land cover classes with annual rate change of 10%, implying that 10% of forest land was lost annually in the area for 20 years. The NDVI classification values of 2020 indicate that the increase in medium (399.62 km2 ) and secondary high (210.17 km2 ) vegetation classes which drastically reduced the size of the high (38.07 km2 ) vegetation class. Consequent disappearance of the high forests of Okomu is inevitable if this trend of exploitation is not checked. It is pertinent to explore other forest management strategies involving community participation.
This study was conducted to find out biological response of Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum exposed to lead (Pb). Experimental period was four weeks. Experimental groups were composed of one control condition and three lead exposure conditions (0.25, 0.50 and 1.00 mg/l). The results of the study confirmed that lead induces reduction of survival rate and oxygen consumption rate and histopathology of organ structure of the bivalve. Oxygen consumption rate was observed exposure groups lower than control decline by 25%-72%. Histological analysis of organ system illustrated expansion of hemolymph sinus, disappearance of epidermal layer and degeneration of connective tissue layer of the mantle. Also, histological degenerations as epithelial necrosis and hyperplasia of mucous cells are recognized in the gill and it was observed expansion of hemolymph sinus, disruption of epithelial layer, decrease of mucous cell and degeneration of connective tissue layer in the foot. In the digestive diverticulum, it was showed atrophy of basophilic cell and degeneration of epithelial cell in the digestive tubules, and as the concentration of lead increased the accumulation of lipofuscin increased.
A comprehensive analysis of the genetic diversity and relationship of the cold-water fishery walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma), the most abundant economically important fishery resource in the East sea of Korea, has not been carried out, despite its importance in Korea. The present study assessed the genetic diversity and relationship between five walleye pollock populations (Korean population, Russian population, USA population, and Japanese populations) of T. chalcogramma using eight microsatellite DNA (msDNA) markers to provide the scientific data for the preservation and management of the Pollock fishery resource. The results of the analysis of 186 individuals of the Pollock revealed a range of 7.13-10.63 numbers of alleles (mean number of alleles=9.05). The means of observed heterozygosity ($H_O$), expected heterozygosity ($H_E$) were 0.732 and 0.698, respectively. The results of genetic distance, Pairwise $F_{ST}$, UPGMA (UPGMA: un-weighted pair-group method with an arithmetical average) (the phylogenetic tree), PCA (PCA: Principal Coordinate analysis) analysis pointed to significant differences between the Korean population, Russian population, USA population, and Japanese populations, although small (p<0.05). These results shed light on the genetic diversity and relationships of T. chalcogramma and can be utilized for research on the evaluation and conservation of Korean T. chalcogramma as genetic resources.

As forest fires continue to increase in scale worldwide, the importance of forest roads in relation to forest fire prevention and suppression has become increasingly evident. To ensure effective functioning during a forest fire disaster, it is crucial to apply appropriate road planning and ensure roads' structural integrity. However, previous studies have predominantly focused on the impact of forest fires on firebreak efficacy and road placement, meaning that insufficient attention has been paid to ensuring the safety of these facilities. Therefore, this study sought to compare the strength of concrete facilities within areas damaged by forest fires over the past three years by using the rebound hammer test to identify signs of thermal degradation. The results revealed that concrete facilities damaged by forest fires exhibited significantly lower strength (15.6 MPa) when compared with undamaged facilities (18.0 MPa) (p<0.001), and this trend was consistent across all the target facilities. Consequently, it is recommended that safety assessment criteria for concrete forest road facilities be established to prevent secondary disasters following forest fire damage. Moreover, continuous monitoring and research involving indoor experiments are imperative in terms of enhancing the stability of forest road structures. It is expected that such research will lead to the development of more effective strategies for forest fire prevention and suppression.

Integrated Coastal Management(ICM) has been recommended by international organizations and experts as a desirable way of dealing with the current problems of ocean pollution and ocean conservation and dealing with the conflicts among the various users of coastal and ocean resources. As a response, the Korean government legislated Coastal Management Act in 1999. following the Act, local governments were required to make a local integrated coastal management plan(LICMP). Though the LICMPs are made, it is not easy to put LICMP in effect, because the mandates of the Coastal Management Act are not clear and there are conflicts regarding the jurisdiction of the coastal areas among relevant departments of the government and because it is not easy to monitor and supervise the activities along the vast areas of coasts and oceans. The traditional method of Implementing the LICMP was not simply feasible. Community-based approach to the ICM was proposed as an alternative to the traditional method. This study aims to examine and introduce the community-based network of organizations as an alternative form of organization best suited to the integrated coastal management. This study is composed of four major parts. First, it examines the advantages of the network as a form of organization vis-vis the market and the hierarchy. Second, it reviews three well-known cases of integrated coastal management programs - Xiamen ICM program in China, Coastcare in Australia and Atlantic Coastal Action Program in Canada. Third, on the basis of the case study, it proposes principles and guidelines which we need to consider when we introduce the community-based approach to the ICM in Korea. Fourth, this study also reports on the actual networking processes in Yeosu City(the Yeosu Network for the effective implementation of integrated coastal management plan). The networking in Yeosu will serve as a demonstration of networking various stake-holders concerned with the balance between the development and conservation of finite ocean resources.

This study aimed to investigate the physicochemical characteristics of fish meal, bone meal, and sesame oil cake, which are readily available by-products from agriculture and fisheries, during the process of liquid fertilizer fermentation, and to examine the effects of liquid fertilizer application on seed germination and growth of tomatoes. During processing the fermentation for liquid fertilizers by using fish meal, bone meal, and sesame oil cake liquid fertilizers, the pH of the fertilizer increased in the order of bone meal > fish meal > sesame oil cake, and the concentration increased rapidly up to 30 days in all types of liquid fertilizer. The nitrogen content of the liquid fertilizers increased as fermentation progressed in the order of fish meal > bone meal > sesame oil cake. The phosphorus content increased as fermentation progressed and the highest was 1.0 % in the liquid fertilizer of sesame oil cake. The germination rate and its index of radish seeds were compared for different dilutions of each of the liquid fertilizers. Excluding the 10-fold dilution of the fish meal and oil cake liquid fertilizer, all the treatment groups showed a germination rate ≥ 95 % and the germination index tended to increase with dilution rate of liquid fertilizers. For responses of tomato growth, there were no significant differences among the liquid fertilizer treatment groups; however, the organic content, microbial density, and microbial biomass C in the soil were higher than chemical fertilizer treatment. These results demonstrated that there were differences in the characteristics of liquid fertilizers depending on the materials used, and that liquid fertilizer can be used for nutrition management for the organic crop cultivation.
Working in the forest would require a wide range of skills and experience for specific tasks which involve with a high level of risks to worker's safety. However, there has been a concern on the current standard wage system for forest workers because it does not effectively reflect the characteristics of typical working conditions in the forest. In addition, the current standard wages for forestry workers was estimated based on the construction industry's wage system. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess a current wage system through the mail survey method and to develop a new wage system for forest worker which effectively reflects skill sets and experience required for successful completion of the work in the forest. We mailed the survey questionnaire consisting of 19 questions to 659 forest workers and received 188 responses resulting in a 28.5% response rate. The results showed that the current average optimal wages of forest worker, special worker and feller were 97,680won/day, 127,559won/day and 152,403won/day, respectively though there were variations depending on the regions. In developing the new standard wage system, this study suggest the current work types(worker, special worker and feller) could be divided into 5 work types (forest-environment workers, forest operations in beginner, forest operations in intermediate, forest operations in advanced and forest equipment operator) reflecting specialty of forest operation thereby stabilizing the new wage system for forest workers.
