  • Every day a huge amount of paper is being used, most of them are thrown after using. This directly impacts on the environment. Therefore, waste paper management is necessity to protect the environment from its annihilation and pollution. Paper recycling products consist of printing paper, newspaper, corrugated containers, magazine paper and so on. Reuse waste paper will reduce the consumption of wood and virgin pulp as recycling one ton of newsprint can save approximately 1 ton of wood, meanwhile recycling 1 ton of printing paper can save more than 2 tons of wood. With increasing recycling rates, lower quality paper fractions may be included. Thus the selection of a paper recycling technology is a crucial first design consideration. The paper recycling must be accompanied by appropriate technology to manage a huge volume of wastepaper. The specific objectives of this study were as follows: (1) comprehensive literature reviews of paper production and consumption, (2) figure out about paper recovery and utilization, (3) investigate the paper recycling in the sustainable times, (4) introduce eco-friendly recycling technology to paper industry.

  • Nowadays, countries all over the world are deeply concerned about pollution in the global environment, so they are seeking various ways to adequately disposal of waste. Still, the environmental situation seems to be getting worse and worse. It is evident that such wastes and pollution have been endangering human life nestled in this globe up to the end of the 20th century. We should not, however, tolerate such human misconduct and mal-management of resources any more in the new millenium. For realizing a society that is sustainable for generations to come, it is important to establish a social system for minimizing wastes, promote re-use and recycling, and develop technology for improving recycling efficiencies, including product designs that facil-itate re-use and recycling and innovative technologies for processing wastes. In this paper, reviewing the current status of Korean waste problems, the governmental policy and specific approach for the establishment for recycling society is considered.

  • The Korea auto industry has developed remarkedly over the past 40 years and ranked up to 5th vehicles production nation in the world. In 2009 alone, Korea produced 3.5million vehicles and number of vehicles registered surpassed the seventeen million. On the other hand, 711 thousand ELV(End of Life Vehicles) were scrapped and used cars more than 265 thousand were exported. In the year 2009, 568 thousand tons of iron, 46 thousand tons of aluminum and 7 thousand tons of copper were recovered from ELV in Korea. Recycling ratio of ELV is approaching 95% by using ASR(Automobile Shredding Residue) as a fuel at cement kiln. Korea has enacted the automobile recycling law in 2007 and enforced it from January 2009, actually. However, the law has not been managed smoothly due to delays in the construction of infrastructure and the existence of a hostile monitoring system. In this regard, a revision and supplement program focused on recycling fee on the automobile recycling law is running under the ministry of environment now. Here, a recycling model for enhancing ELV recycling is suggested.

  • In order to promote recycling of animal and plant residues, it is necessary to prepare detailed statistics on the sources, generation amount and the state of disposal so that waste recycling companies and enterprises can obtain the information easily. Also, the recycling methods specified in the law should be appropriate. For this, the study reviewed the appropriateness of detailed classification of animal and plant residues and permitted recycling methods in the Enforcement Regulations of the Waste Management Act of Korea. For improvement of the detailed classification, the study conducted literature review on European and Japanese ones. Additionally, we visited slaughterhouses of livestock and poultry, vegetable oils manufacturing companies, starches and glucose or maltose manufacturing companies, which generate the waste and recycle the waste, to grasp the status of recycling in Korea. Based on the results, the study proposes improvement measures for the detailed classification and the permitted recycling types in the law.

  • In the present study, the thermodynamic evaluation of the sulfate-roasting process was conducted to extract vanadium from the Korean vanadium titano-magnetite ore. The leaching efficiency of vanadium and other impurities was analyzed for varying roasting temperatures and addition of Na2SO4. In the case of sulfate roasting, the roasting temperature was 200 ℃ higher than that previously observed Na2CO3 roasting. However, the higher leaching efficiency of vanadium and lower leaching efficiency of other impurities, such as aluminum and silicon, were observed. The high selectivity for the extraction of vanadium in sulfate roasting would result from the reaction mechanism between SO2 gas and vanadium concentrate.

  • In Korea, because of the shortage of reclaimed lands and disposal sites and the small size of national land, A political measure for construction wastes recycling is needed. therefore we studied the current state of construction wastes recycling and the act for it. And we analyzed problems and unreasonable regulations regarding the wastes. So we suggested an alternative act to increase the construction wastes recycling.

  • It is generally well known that PCB (Printed Circuit Board) is an electric component assembled by various metals mixed with plastics and ceramics. Accordingly, it is very important to extract metallic components from used PCBs from the point of view of recycling of used resources as well as an environmental protection. In this paper, patents and paper on the recycling technologies of PCB were analyzed. The range of search was limited in the open patents of USA (US), European Union (EP), Japan (JP), Korea (KR) and SCI journals from 1980 to 2011. Patents and journals were collected using key-words searching and filtered by filtering criteria. The trends of the patents and journals was analyzed by the years, countries, companies, and technologies.

  • Recently, the importance of efficient resource management has been highlighted due to the uncertainty of its security. Korea has thus made an effort to improve the resource productivity in various fields such as the increase of recycling rate and the establishment of methodical resource management system. It is still necessary to draw the innovative improvement measure of national resource efficiency. This study derives major issues of recycling potential in the domestic industry by analyzing the current status of generation, treatment and recycling of industrial wastes in Korea. Futhermore, main tasks for promoting the improvement of national resource efficiency through the recycling of industrial wastes in Korea have been proposed based on the results of this study with the comparison of Japan's situation.
