The Effects of Material Attenuation on Acoustic Resonance Scattering from Cylindrical Tubes (초음파 감쇠가 원형관의 공명 산란에 미치는 영향)

  • Sound scattering by cylindrical tubes submerged in water is numerically analyzed with material attenuation considered. Complex wave numbers is introduced to see the effects of material attenuation on resonance scattering Backscattering pressures from the shells immersed in water are calculated for air-filled aluminium and acryl tubes. In order to investigate the resonance characteristics in detail, numerical analysis program has been completed which enables us to evaluate the effects of material attenuation. The testing of the program by comparison with previous results is reported and calculation results are compared and discussed for both aluminium and acryl tubes with material attenuation considered. The resonance peak and width is strongly affected by attenuation and this becomes severe as the peak is sharp and narrow and $k_{1{\alpha}}$ is high.

[ $^1H$ ] Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy of Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma (일차성 중추신경 림프종의 수소 자기공명분광법)

  • Purpose: We evaluated $^1H$ MR spectroscopy improves the preoperative diagnosis of diffuse infiltrative type of primary central nervous system lymphomas. Materials and methods: After review of conventional MR images and medical records, we retrospectively reviewed proton MR spectra in seven patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma diagnosed by means of biopsy. Relative ratio of choline (Cho), N-acetylaspartate (NAA), and lipid-lactate (Lip-Lac) to creatine (Cr) were measured for quantitative analysis. Results: The average ratio of Cho/Cr was $1.80{\pm}0.95$, NAA/Cr was $1.34{\pm}0.41$, and Lip-Lac/Cr was $1.12{\pm}0.16$. All cases of lymphomas showed increased Lip-Lac peak. Two case of mass forming lymphoma showed decreased NAA/Cr significantly, whereas five cases of lymphoma without mass formation showed preserved NAA/Cr. Conclusion : We thought the presence of Lip-Lac peak without significant reduction of NAA on the MR spectroscopy was helpful for diagnosis of diffuse infiltrative type of central nervous system lymphoma.

Analysis of GMR Phenomenon by Asymmetric Multi-layered Dielectric Gratings (비대칭 다층 유전체 격자구조에 의한 GMR 현상의 분석)

  • A plane-wave incident upon asymmetric multi-layered dielectric grating as well as symmetric grating structure generates space harmonics. Selected space harmonics among those harmonics can undergo strong resonance scattering variations known as GMR(guided-mode resonance). In this paper, to clarify these effects, the field propagation and dispersion curve inside the grating region are analyzed by using a rigorous equivalent transmission-line theory(RETT) based on eigenvalue problem. The results show that, at the peak of a scattering resonance, the reflected mode is almost identical to a leaky wave that can be supported by the grating structure. Thus, it confirms to be occurred GMR effect associated with the free-resonant character of leaky waves at asymmetric multi-layered dielectric gratings. Quantitative simulation results illustrating the behavior of typical gratings are given, and the special case of normal incidence is discussed for TE and TM modes.

Usefulness of the PRESS Technique using 3.0T Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy for Evaluation of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Patients (비알콜성 지방간환자 평가를 위한 3.0T 고자기장 자기공명분광법을 이용한 PRESS 기법의 유용성)

  • This study was to evaluate the clinical usefulness of the PRESS technique based on the correlation between PRESS technique and biopsy results by applying 3.0T high magnetic field MRS technique for evaluation of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease patients. This experiment were carried out using a 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging equipment. The part data of each spectrum is taken by peak area integration. The part data of resonance peak was used to calculate relative ratio. MR spectral peak in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is from 0.9 to 1.6 ppm. According to MRS method study result, Patients with NAFLD were obtained with 94% sensitivity and 80% specificity(p=0.000). When compared to normal based on MRS and Biopsy results was valid correlation(r=0.79, p=0.04). Results for NAFLD(r=0.89, p=0.002) also showed a correlation. Therefore, PRESS technique to evaluate patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, the distribution difference between normal liver and fatty liver part is significantly distinguished. Biopsy and MRS fatty liver peak ratio(%) proves high lipid over grade(r = 0.7).

Surface Plasmon Resonances of Metal Colloidal Particles Synthesized by a Photo-Chemical Process (광화학적 방법을 이용한 금속입자의 합성과 광학적 특성 연구)

  • Metal colloidal particles have been prepared by a photo-chemical process in an aqueous solution containing semiconductor nanocrystallites. Metal colloidal particles produced in CdS and AgBr exhibit different absorption spectra. Au particles produced in solution with CdS show typical Au plasmon resonance absorption spectra. On the other hand Ag particles in solution with AgBr shows surface plasmon resonance absorption spectra which are red-shifted, as compared to that of a dispersion of homogeneous Ag colloidal particles in the same host. The extent of red-shift depends on the UV illumination time. This phenomenon is interpreted within the context of effective medium theory for small volume fractions. From the theory, a metal coated particle predicts Ag plasmon resonance, red shifted with respect to 400 nm that would be associated with a silver particle in solution. The absorption peak position is very sensitive to the coating thickness.

[ $^{11}B$ ] Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study of Spin Structures in Terbium Tetraboride

  • [ $^{11}B$ ] nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements were performed on the single crystals of $TbB_4$ to investigate local electronic structure and 4f spin dynamics. $^{11}B$ NMR spectrum, Knight shift, spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation rates were measured down to 4K at 8T. $^{11}B$ NMR shift and linewidth are huge and strongly temperature dependent due to the 4f moments. In addition, both are proportional to magnetic susceptibility, indicating that the hyperfine field at the boron site originates from the 4f spins of Tb. Below $T_N$, the single broad resonance peak of $^{11}B$ NMR splits into several peaks reflecting the local magnetic fields due to antiferromagnetic spin arrangements. The longitudinal and the transverse relaxation rates, $1/T_1\;and\;1/T_2$, independent of temperature above $T_N$, decreases tremendously confirming huge suppression of spin fluctuation below $T_N$.

The Effect of Poling Strength on Temperature Dependence of Resonance Frequency of PZT Ceramics Near the Morphotropic Phase Boundary (분극전계가 모포트로픽 상경계 부근의 PZT 세라믹스의 공진주파수의 온도의존성에 미치는 영향)

  • Poling is an important process in fabricating PZT ceramic devices such as filters and resonators and activates piezoelectricity to sintered PZT ceramics. Tolerance of the operating frequency of these devices is tightly required in applications. And a factor to attribute the tolerance is the temperature dependence of the resonance frequency of PZT ceramics. In this paper the relationship of poling strength and temperature dependence of resonance frequency of PZT specimens was studied. The $Pb(Zr_{0.53}Ti_{0.47})O_3$ ceramics were fabricated and the poling strengths were chosen to be 0.5, 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 [kV/mm]. The dielectric constant of the specimen poled in poling strength 0.5 [kV/mm] was less than that of unpoled specimen and the specimen poled in higher electric field had the higher dielectric constant. (002) peak in X-ray diffraction patterns of the specimens increased as poling strength increased. And the change of resonance frequency of the specimens according to the variation of temperature was measured. Resonance frequency of all specimens increased as the temperature increased. The specimen poled in higher electric field had the smaller positive temperature coefficient of resonance frequency. The effect that temperature coefficient of resonance frequency becomes smaller is obtained when Zr mole in PZT composition equation increase. Controlling the poling strength is believed to be a method to adjust the temperature stability of resonance frequency of the PZT ceramic devices.

Normal MR Spectroscopic Findings of the Cerebellum and Pons: Comparison of the Results between Intra-Unit and Inter-Unit Studies (소뇌와 뇌교의 정상 자기공명분광 소견: 같은 장비내 및 다른 장비간의 결과 비교)

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study are to evaluate normal MR spectroscopy (MRS) data of the cerebellum and pons, and to evaluate intra-unit and inter-unit differences of the results. Materials and methods: Nine normal volunteers (mean age 23 years) were studied with two 1.5 Tesla MR units (A and B units). A total of four sessions of MRS study were performed with two sessions in ea.ch MR unit in each volunteer. In each session, MRS data were obtained from bilateral cerebellar hemisphere and pons. MRS was performed using spin-echo single voxel technique with repetition time of 2000 ms, echo time of 288ms and 128 averagings. Voxel size was $2{\;}{\times}{\;}2{\;}{\times}{\;}1.5{\;}cm$ in the cerebellum and $1.5{\;}{\times}{\;}1.5{\;}{\times}{\;}1.5{\;}cm$ in the pons. Metabolite ratios of NAA/Cho, NAAcCr, NAAc(Cho+Cr) and Cr/Cho (both peak heights and the peak areas) were compared among the results of four sessions of MRS for evaluation of intra-unit and inter-unit differences. Results: In the cerebellum, mean (SO values of peak height NAA/Cho, NAA/Cr, NAA/(Cho+Cr) and Cr/Cho ratios obtained in the first session of A unit were $1.08{\pm}O.16,{\;}1.44{\pm}O.286,{\;}0.61{\pm}O.09{\;}and{\;}O.76{\pm}0.13$, respectively. Comparing with the results of the second session, intra-unit differences were 3-7%. In B unit intra-unit differences were 1-9%, except for 22% of Cr/Cho ratio. Inter-unit differences between A and B units were 1-26%. In the pons, mean ISD values of peak height NANCho, NANCr, NANICho + Cr) and Cr/Cho ratios obtained in the first session of A unit were $1.51{\pm}O.35,{\;}3.35{\pm}O.78,{\;}1.02{\pm}0.16{\;}and{\;}0.47{\pm}O.14$, respectively. Mean NAAfCho, NANCr and NAAI(Cho+ Cr} ratios of the pons were significantly higher than those of the cerebellum. Intra-unit differences were 2-21 % in A unit and 4-18 % in B unit. Inter-unit differences between A and B units were 1-18%. The mean values obtained by using peak area were generally higher and wider in range than those of peak height in both units. Conclusion: Mean NAAfCho, NAAlCr and NAAf(Cho+Cr) ratios of the cerebellum were significanHy lower than those of the pons. Intra-unit differences of most metabolites ratios were generally not significant, whereas inter-unit differences were greater than intra-unit differences in more metabolite ratios. Therefore, normal MRS data of the cerebellum and the pons should be obtained in every MR unit, before MRS applications in the diseases of the cerebellum and the pons.

  • Vibration spectrums of the test loop according to flow conditions were analyzed in order to identify the sources of vibration at peak frequencies. While a flow condition of the sweep test was changed by varying pump rotational speed from 450 rpm to 1500 rpm by the step 150 rpm, midspan acceleration of the test section in width-direction and dynamic pressure perturbation in the test section were measured. Other sources of vibration due to the flow structure interactions, such as acoustic resonance, blade pulsing frequency and bellows wrinkles, were investigated. Pressure perturbation in the section and acoustic resonance due to branch pipe give major effects to the vibration of the test section in high frequency range of 1.5 kHz to 2.8 kHz.
