  • In this research, reverse engineering was applied to the product manufactured by "Vanzetti" from Italy to develop a localized cryogenic submerged pump used in small-scale LNG liquefaction plants. The results of modal analysis of the impeller and shaft confirmed that the resonance frequency of the impeller and shaft played an important role in the rotor. Modal analysis of the rotor confirmed that the forcing frequency had no influence on the resonance phenomenon.

  • Due to the self-diffusion of nuclear spins, the edge of phantoms is enhanced in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), especially in the case of microscopy [1]. According to several published works, theory has been established that the edge enhancement is caused by the motion narrowing around bounded regions due to diffusions of nuclear spins during data acquisition. It is found, however, that the signal decreases due to the diffusion attenuation and image is distorted as edge of the image is sharpened. In this paper, we wilt investigate this signal loss during data acquisition and its effects on image, i.e., image edge enhancement due to the diffusion phenomenon. This result is new and different from the previously discussed edge enhancement due to the diffusion, namely, by motion narrowing effect or spin bouncing effect at the boundary.

  • Molecularly imprinted polymer thin films were applied to develop a gas sensor based on the surface plasmon resonance phenomenon for small gaseous molecules such as toluene and xylene. The imprinted polymer films were synthesized via photo-polymerization method using various combination of templates, functional monomers and cross-linkers. The temperature of pre-polymerization solutions and the power of UV light were controlled for optimized performance of gas sensing. The morphology and porosity of the polymer films were controlled by varying the mixing ratios of the pre-polymerization solutions and confirmed by atomic force microscopy. By fitting the adsorption/desorption sensorgrams to conventional kinetic models, the effects of different templates and cross-linkers were interpreted in term of the structural differences of the polymer networks formed on the gold film. The sensitivity and selectivity of sensors were estimated for toluene and xylene, and also for humidity and other gaseous molecules such as formaldehyde and ammonia.

  • The metal halide lamps are now widely used in the application and commercial lighting due to their attracting properties such as good color rendering and high efficiency. But, they have the serious problem of acoustic resonance for high frequency operation and they need the high voltage to ignite. So, they have not been applied to indoors. Over the past few years, a considerable number of studies have been conducted on the electronic ballast together with hot restarting and resonance phenomenon. But, very few attempts have been made with the adaptive ignition method according to the lamp state. In this paper, electronic ballast is proposed for metal halide lamps with an igniter for adaptive ignition. The proposed electronic ballast can generate different ignition voltages according to the arc tube state.

  • Comprehensive numerical computations are made of side-heated squire cavity which is exposed to time dependent external mechanical forcing. Numerical solutions are acquires to the governing two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for a Boussinesq fluid. Time dependent heat transfer characteristics of interior fluid are analyzed to illustrate resonance phenomenon. When system is exposed to pure sinusoidal mechanical forcing, the numerical results disclose that the basic mechanism of resonance of mechanical forcing is same as that of thermal forcing of Ref. [3, 9]. In comparatively small amplitude of mechanical forcing, thermal characteristics of the system are similar to basic system(${\varepsilon}=0$).

  • Dynamic behaviors of the impact damper are studied experimentally and numerically. In order to investigate wide range of excitation frequencies and amplitudes, a simple but high amplifying and bias-free experimental setup is designed. Experiments focused on the harsh operation condition demonstrate Accelerated mass loading which not only deteriorates the performance of the impact damper but also involves the structural resonance which should be avoided for the stability of the system. In the previous studies, instability or deterioration of the performance was reported for the off resonance frequency region. But this paper shows that the performance deterioration and structural resonances can be predicted. Using finite element modeling and analysis, accurate system parameters were derived and used for the numerical modeling employing the conservation of the momentum. Numerical study of the transient responses using 4th-order Runge-Kutta method demonstrates general performance of the system, and shows that accelerated mass loading phenomenon is deeply related with the vibration amplitudes and the mass of the auxiliary system.

  • Resonance radiation trapping has a great influence on the characteristics of vacuum ultraviolet(VUV) photon emissions in AC PDP cell. We calculate the spatial andspectral distributions of VUV photons, which are radiated by excited Xe in AC PDP cell by Monte Carlo method. Especially a dip in the spectrum at center frequency is discovered both in simulation and in experiment. We give a physical explanation of this phenomenon by the concept of frequency-dependent mean free path of VUV photons.

  • In this study, it was experimentally confirmed that the phenomenon of resonance effect of wave drag in two wavy walls. The channel had saw-tooth type of relief surfaces when supersonic gas flows into this channel. Experiment was carried out on the differential apparatus by conducting the comparative test of two nozzles (round sonic nozzle and two-dimensional nozzle with wavy walls). The two-dimensional nozzle was joined alternately with flat walls which had saw-tooth type of symmetrical and asymmetric reliefs. Two-dimensional nozzle was designed for the M=3 and profiled parabolic contour.

  • When the high-speed train running on the track, there is a speed limit which track distortion is unusually increased according to condition of track and roadbed. This speed limit is called critical velocity, and physical parameter value increased very greatly. These phenomenon happened as high-speed train were developed, studied regularly through TGV 100 running test in France. As research result until now, the main reason is soft roadbed's capacity. Wave propagation and track support capacity is varied by the site characteristics. This paper achieved theoretical examination about resonance band(speed and frequency) that occurred in roadbed on the base rock in point of geotechnical engineering. The examination of resonance divides with ground response analysis, critical band analysis by the shear wave velocity of roadbed, train critical speed through the ground stratum.
