  • A new ultrasound imaging technique based on simultaneous multiple transmit focusing using orthogonal modified Golay codes is presented. modified Golay codes are used to increase signal-to-noise-ratio(SNR) and maximize the transmit power efficiency(TPE). Conventional Golay codes consist of a pair of complementary codes with same length and can be compressed into a delta-like signal due to their complementary property. In the present work, two modified Golay codes focused at different depths are transmitted at the same time, which are mutually orthogonal. On receive, these orthogonal modified Golay codes are separately compressed into two short pulses and individually focused. These two focused beam are combined to form a frame of image with improved lateral resolution. Computer simulations are performed to verity the proposed method improves the lateral resolution of image compared with the conventional echo system.

Development of hybrid shielding system for large-area Compton camera: A Monte Carlo study

  • Compton cameras using large scintillators have been developed for high imaging sensitivity. These scintillator-based Compton cameras, however, mainly due to relatively low energy resolution, suffer from undesired background-radiation signals, especially when radioactive materials' activity is very low or their location is far from the Compton camera. To alleviate this problem for a large-size Compton camera, in the present study, a hybrid-type shielding system was designed that combines an active shield with a veto detector and a passive shield that surrounds the active shield. Then, the performance of the hybrid shielding system was predicted, by Monte Carlo radiation transport simulation using Geant4, in terms of minimum detectable activity (MDA), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and image resolution. Our simulation results show that, for the most cases, the hybrid shielding system significantly improves the performance of the large-size Compton camera. For the cases investigated in the present study, the use of the shielding system decreased the MDA by about 1.4, 1.6, and 1.3 times, increased the SNR by 1.2-1.9, 1.1-1.7, and 1.3-2.1 times, and improved the image resolution (i.e., reduced the FWHM) by 7-8, 1-6, and 3-5% for 137Cs, 60Co, and 131I point source located at 1-5 m from the imaging system, respectively.

  • The role of magnetic resonance(MR) imaging in the evaluation of thoracic disease has been limited Nontheless, MR has inherent properties of better contrast resolution than CT allowing tissue-specific diagnosis. MR has capability of direct imaging in sagittal, coronal, and oblique planes which provide better anatomic information than axial images of CT such as lesions in the pulmonary apex, aorticopulmonary window, peridiaphragmatic region, and subcarinal region. MR is sensitive to blood flow making it an ideal imaging modality for the evaluation of cardiovascular system of the thorax without the need for intravenous contrast media. Technical developments and better control of motion artifacts have resulted in improved image quality, and clinical applications of MR imaging in thoracic diseases have been expanded. Although MR imaging is considered as a problem-solving tool in patients with equivocal CT findings, MR should be used as the primary imaging modality in the following situations: 1) Evaluation of the cardiovascular abnormalities of the thorax 2) Evaluation of the superior sulcus tumors 3) Evaluation of the chest wall invasion or mediastinal invasion by tumor 4) Evaluation of the posterior mediastinal mass, especially neurogenic tumor 5) Differentiation of fibrosis and residual or recurrent tumor, especially in lymphoma 6) Evaluation of brachial plexopathy With technical developments and fast scan capabilities, clinical indications for MR imaging in thorax will increase in the area of pulmonary parenchymal and pulmonary vascular imaging.

A Coaxial and Off-axial Integrated Three-mirror Optical System with High Resolution and Large Field of View

  • A novel optical design for high resolution, large field of view (FOV) and multispectral remote sensing is presented. An f/7.3 Korsch and two f/17.9 Cook three-mirror optical systems are integrated by sharing the primary and secondary mirrors, bias of the FOV, decentering of the apertures and reasonable structure arrangement. The aperture stop of the Korsch system is located on the primary mirror, while those of the Cook systems are on the exit pupils. High resolution image with spectral coverage from visible to near-infrared (NIR) can be acquired through the Korsch system with a focal length of 14 m, while wide-field imaging is accomplished by the two Cook systems whose focal lengths are both 13.24 m. The full FOV is 4°×0.13°, a coverage width of 34.9 km at the altitude of 500 km can then be acquired by push-broom imaging. To facilitate controlling the stray light, the intermediate images and the real exit pupils are spatially available. After optimization, a near diffraction-limited performance and a compact optical package are achieved. The sharing of the on-axis primary and secondary mirrors reduces the cost of fabrication, test, and manufacture effectively. Besides, the two tertiary mirrors of the Cook systems possess the same parameters, further cutting down the cost.

Development of a Small Animal CT using a Linear Detector Array and Small-Scale Slip Rings

  • We have developed a small bore x-ray CT for small animal imaging with a linear x-ray detector array and small-scale slip rings. The linear x-ray detector array consists of 1024 elements of 400□m×400□m with a gadolinium oxysulfide (GOS) scintillator on top of them. To avoid use of expensive large diameter slip rings for projection data transmission from the X­ray detector to the image reconstruction system, we used the wireless LAN technology. The projection data are temporally stored in the data acquisition system residing on the rotating gantry during the scan and they are transmitted to the image reconstruction system after the scan. With the wireless LAN technology, we only needed to use small-scale slip rings to deliver the AC electric power to the X-ray generator and the power supply on the rotating gantry. The performances of the small animal CT system, such as SNR, contrast, and spatial resolution, have been evaluated through experiments using various phantoms. It has been experimentally found that the SNR is almost linearly proportional to the tube current and tube voltage, and the minimum resolvable contrast is less than 30 CT numbers at 40kVp/3.0㎃. The spatial resolution of the small animal CT system has been found to be about 0.9Ip/㎜. Postmortem images of a piglet is also presented.

NEAR-INFRARED WIDE-FIELD IMAGING CAMERA WITH PtSi 1040 $\times$ 1040 CSD

  • We have constructed a near-infrared imaging camera which is attached to the prime focus of 105cm Schmidt telescope at Kiso Observatory. The camera is equipped with a 1040$\times$1040 PtSi CSD array developed by Mitsubishi Electric Co. The combination of Kiso Schmidt and the array gives a wide field of view of 18.4'$\times$18.4' with a reasonable spatial resolution of 1.06' /pixel. The system performances of the camera have been evaluated through laboratory and observational tests. Low noise, good cosmetics(no defect pixels), and good stability of the camera system show an excellent performance for astronomical use.

자기공명영상 신경조영술: 경험이 적은 영상의학과 의사가 이해해야 할 몇 가지 쟁점들 (MR Neurography: Current Several Issues for Novice Radiologists)

  • 말초신경병증의 진단을 위해 MR neurography의 사용이 점차 증가하고 있다. 고대조도와 고해상도로 말초신경을 직접 영상화한 MR 영상을 MR neurography라고 하고, 지방억제 T2 강조영상과 확산강조영상이 흔히 사용되는 시퀀스이다. 작은 직경, 복잡한 해부학적 구조를 가진 말초신경을 합리적 시간 안에 영상화하기 위해서 최신의 isotropic 3차원 기법, 다양한 고속영상기법, post-processing 영상 기법 등이 사용된다. 이런 발전들로 인해 MR neurography가 유용하게 사용되지만 항상 적절한 MR neurography 영상을 얻을 수 있는 것은 아니다. 적절한 MR neurography 영상을 얻기 위해 영상의학과 의사가 고려해야 할 다음의 몇 가지 쟁점들이 있다. 이에는 적절한 표준 프로토콜의 선책, 지방억제 기법의 선택, 해상도와 field of view와 slice thickness 간의 상호 관계의 이해, 적절한 post-processing 영상 기법의 적용, 2차원 영상획득 기법과 3차원 영상획득 기법의 장단점, 근위부 말초신경과 말단부 말초신경의 T2 대조도의 차이, 말초신경에 인접한 정맥이 MR neurography에 미치는 영향, 확산강조영상에서 기하학적 왜곡의 발생과 적절한 b value의 선택 등이다. 이런 쟁점들을 잘 이해하는 것이 경험이 적은 영상의학과 의사가 적절한 MR neurography 영상을 얻고, 말초신경병증을 정확히 평가하는 데 많은 도움이 될 것이다.

  • We investigated the effects of scintillation crystal surface treatment on gamma camera imaging. The NaI(Tl) and CsI(Tl) (20 mm (dia.) $\times10mm$ (thick) plate) scintillators were chosen for this study. Two different surface treatments, white and black reflectors, were applied to NaI(Tl) and CsI(Tl). The optical properties of generated scintillation light were evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation and postion sensitive photo multiplier tube (PSPMT). We measured sensitivity, energy resolution and spatial resolution of a gamma camera system with the scintillators coupled to a PSPMT. Based on the results, we concluded that the careful consideration of surface treatments of the scintillator was necessary in order to develop the gamma camera having good sensitivity and spatial resolution.

  • 적외선 영상 장비에 사용되는 광학계는 온도에 따른 굴절률의 변화가 심해 운용 온도 범위가 넓은 군용 적외선 영상장비에는 자동초점조절 기능이 필수적이다. 본 논문에서는 3중 배율의 적외선 영상 장비를 설계하고 해당 장비의 온도에 따른 굴절률 변화를 보상하기 위하여 온도 챔버에 영상 장비와 시준기를 설치하여 온도에 따른 렌즈 초점 이동량 변화를 측정하였다. 측정된 이동량을 활용하여 자동초점조절 기능을 구현하였으며 두 번의 온도 시험을 통해 -35~71℃의 넓은 운용 온도범위에서 상온의 MTF 성능과 동등한 수준의 분해능 성능의 영상을 확인하였다.

이중 산란형 컴프턴 카메라 구성 검출기 성능 평가 (Performance Evaluation of Component Detectors of Double-scattering Compton Camera)

  • 현재 개발중에 있는 이중 산란형 컴프턴 카메라는 두 대의 산란부 검출기(양면 실리콘 스트립 검출기, DSSD)와 하나의 흡수부 검출기(NaI(Tl) 섬광 검출기)로 구성되며, 소형이면서도 높은 영상해상도를 제공할 수 있는 구조를 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이중 산란형 컴프턴 카메라를 구성하고 있는 감마선 검출기들의 에너지 분해능 및 시간 분해능을 평가하고, 산란부 검출기의 에너지 분해능에 영향을 미치는 인자들을 등가 노이즈 전하(equivalent noise charge)를 통하여 분석하였다. DSSD-1은 평균적으로 59.5 keV 피크($^{241}Am$)에 대하여 $25.2keV{\pm}0.8keV$ FWHM의 에너지 분해능을 보였으며, DSSD-2는 $31.8keV{\pm}4.6keV$ FWHM의 에너지 분해능 지니고 있는 것으로 확인되었다. DSSD의 시간 분해능은 57.25 ns FWHM으로 평가되었고, NaI(Tl) 섬광 검출기의 시간 분해능은 7.98 ns FWHM이었다. 또한 이중산란형 컴프턴 카메라를 이용하여 $^{137}Cs$ 점선원에 대한 컴프턴 영상을 획득한 후 성능을 평가하였다. 이번 실험을 통해서 영상해상도 8.4 mm FWHM (각 분해능 $8.1^{\circ}$ FWHM)을 획득하였고, 영상감도는 $1.5{\times}10^{-7}$(고유 효율=$1.9{\times}10^{-6}$)으로 나타났다.
