Piping, a common form of internal embankment erosion, is caused by progressive movement of soil particles through an embankment. The phenomenon commonly occurs with precursory signs of development of fractures in dam structures, but also occurs without any noticeable signs in dams that showed satisfactory dam performance for several years, due to dissolution of soluble material in an embankment. While piping accounts for nearly 50% of the causes for dam failure, few studies have been made for systematic evaluation of the phenomenon. In this study, we attempted to monitor the changes in electrical resistivities of fill-dam material while a saddle dam is dismantled for the construction of emergency spillways of Daechung dam. Two artificial subhorizontal boreholes were drilled into the embankment structure to simulate piping along the two artificial flow channels. Monitoring of changes in electrical resistivity showed an increase in resistivity values during piping. Thus, the investigation of resistivity over time could be an effective method for piping prediction.
Monitoring of corrosion is in most cases based on simulation of environmental conditions on a large and complex structure such as a buried pipeline using a small probe, and the measurement of thermodynamics and kinetics of corrosion processes occurring on the probe surface. This paper presents a hybrid corrosion monitoring probe designed for simulating deteriorating conditions wrought by disbonded coatings and for measuring current densities and distribution of such densities on a simulated pipeline surface. The concept of the probe was experimentally evaluated using immersion tests under cathodic protection (CP) in high resistivity aqueous solution. Underneath the disbonded area, anodic currents and cathodic currents were carefully measured. Anodic current densities were used to calculate metal loss according to Faraday's law. Calculated corrosion patterns were compared with corrosion damage observed at the surface of the probe after a series of stringent tests. The capability of the probe to measure anodic current densities under CP, without requiring interruption, was demonstrated in high resistivity aqueous solution. The pattern of calculated metal loss correlated well with corrosion products distribution observed at the array surface. Working principles of the probe are explained in terms of electrochemistry.
The purpose of this paper is to improve the grounding point measurement method for the maintenance of the earth resistance of the distribution line. This study defines the correlation among humidity of the soil, the earth resistivity and the grounding resistance. Based on the results of the study, the grounding resistance value measurement should be limited to the location where the earth resistivity change is large, and the measurement time and cost can be greatly reduced.
In order to investigate ground state change visually in physical model during centrifuge testing, electrical resistivity survey was adopted. Commercial resistivity survey equipment verified at various in-situ sites was utilized. The resistivity survey equipment installed in centrifuge facility was remotely controlled through intranet and electrical resistivity images obtained while centrifuge testing was being checked by real-time inversion. To verify the stable operation of the developed resistivity survey system, preliminary tests were conducted. Model ground was uniformly constructed using unsaturated soil and saline water was dropped on the ground surface to simulate contaminant flow situation. During the 10 g centrifuge tests, electrical resistivity was continuously detected and the testing results were compared with those of identically carried out 1 g centrifuge tests. In addition, the electrical resistivity was directly measured immediately after the centrifuge test by open cutting the model. Finally, reliability of electrical resistivity survey in the centrifuge test was verified by comparing those testing results.
In order to reduce leakage from a reservoir, a large amount of cement milk (grout) was injected from boreholes drilled around the shores of the reservoir, and monitored to establish the infiltration of cement milk into the bedrock under the reservoir. From laboratory tests using rock core samples, it was revealed that the resistivity of cement milk is much lower than that of the groundwater at this location. Therefore, it was expected that the resistivity of the zones filled with cement milk would be significantly reduced. Geophysical surveys are expected to be suitable methods to check the effectiveness of grouting in improving the water-retaining performance of a reservoir. DC electrical surveys (seven in total) and two Controlled Source Audio-frequency Magneto-Telluric (CSAMT) surveys were conducted along survey lines in the reservoir to monitor the infiltration of cement milk during the grouting. Extremely low resistivity zones ($10\;{\Omega}m$ or less) were observed in resistivity sections obtained by 2D inversion. The zones are inferred to be fractured zones filled with cement milk. In sections showing the rate of change of resistivity, three zones that showed significant change showed gradual expansion to deeper parts as the grouting progressed. These zones correspond to highly permeable zones detected by Lugeon tests at grout boreholes. We have confirmed that it is possible to measure the resistivity change by DC electrical and CSAMT surveys from the surface of the reservoir. It seems that such monitoring results could be reflected in future grouting plans.

We developed a time-lapse inversion using new cross-model constraints based on change ratio and resolution of model parameters. The cross-model constraint based on change ratio imposes the same penalty on the model parameters with equal change ratio. This constraint can emphasize the model parameters with significant change regardless of their increase or decrease. The resolution cross-model constraint imposes a small penalty on the model parameters with poor resolution, but a large penalty on the model parameters with good resolution. Thus, the model parameter with poor resolution can be effectively identified in the inversion result if they are significantly changed with time. Through the numerical tests for 3D resistivity monitoring data sets, the performance of these two cross-model constraints was confirmed. Finally, for the safety estimation of a sea dyke, we applied the developed time-lapse inversion to the 3D resistivity monitoring data that were acquired at a sea dike located in western coastal area of Korea. The result of time-lapse inversion suggested that there were no significant changes at the sea dike during the monitoring period.
To investigate the applicability of physical prospecting technique in soft ground assessment, the resistivity monitoring data of 6 months are acquired. The Multichannel Analysis Surface Wave (MASW) has been additionally performed to identify the shear wave velocity and strength distribution of soft ground. Moreover, by using the Cone Penetration Test (CPT) and laboratory tests of drilling samples, a relationship with the physical prospect data is checked and the reliability of the physical prospect data is increased. Through these activities, the behavior patterns of soft soil are identified by long term monitoring, and the significant relationship between the shear wave velocity and laboratory tests has been confirmed, both of which can be useful in the surface wave exploration to evaluate the strength of soft ground. Finally, using the geostatistical method, 3-dimensional soil base distribution images are obtained about the combined physical prospecting data with heterogeneous data. Through the studies, the nature of entire area can be determined by long term resistivity monitoring for the soft ground assessment in wider area. It would be more economic and reliable if additional exploring and drilling samples can be analyzed, which can reinforce the assessment.
To verify reinforcing effect of grouting materials on the water leakage region in dike, we performed various hydraulic test and we also applied electric resistivity survey including electrical resistivity tomography(ERT) to see resistivity variation before and after grouting. As the results of dipole-dipole array survey along dike, resistivity distribution after grouting was without noticeable spatial variation. Long term resistivity monitoring results at dike with Schlumberger array electric resistivity survey showed that the decreasing region of apparent resistivity and one dimensional inversion results were the occupied region by grout after grouting. From the ERT using check holes to inspect the effect of grouting, we could find that the ERT is quite effective to evaluate spatially grout region in dike.
The objective of this study is to estimate the distribution of a zone disturbed by excavation (EDZ) around tunnels that have been excavated at about 500 m depth in pre-Tertiary hard sedimentary rock. One of the most important tasks is to evaluate changes in the dynamic stability and permeability of the rock around the tunnels, by investigating the properties of the rock after the excavation. We performed resistivity and acoustic tomography using two boreholes, 5 m in length, drilled horizontally from the wall of a tunnel in pre-Tertiary hard conglomerate. By these methods, we detected a low-resistivity and low-velocity zone 1 m in thickness around the wall of the tunnel. The resulting profiles were verified by permeability and evaporation tests performed at the same boreholes. This anomalous zone matched a high-permeability zone caused by open fractures. Next, we performed resistivity monitoring along annular survey lines in a tunnel excavated in pre-Tertiary hard shale by a tunnel-boring machine (TBM). We detected anomalous zones in 2D resistivity profiles surrounding the tunnel. A low-resistivity zone 1 m in thickness was detected around the tunnel when one year had passed after the excavation. However, two years later, the resistivity around the tunnel had increased in a portion, about 30 cm in thickness, of this zone. To investigate this change, we studied the relationship between groundwater flow from the surroundings and evaporation from the wall around the tunnel. These features were verified by the relationship between the resistivity and porosity of rocks obtained by laboratory tests on core samples. Furthermore, the profiles matched well with highly permeable zones detected by permeability and evaporation tests at a horizontal borehole drilled near the survey line. We conclude that the anomalous zones in these profiles indicate the EDZ around the tunnel.

Cure monitoring and nondestructive characteristics of carbon fiber/epoxy composites were evaluated by the measurements of electrical resistance and acoustic emission (AE). Logarithmic electrical resistivity of the untreated single-carbon fiber composite increased suddenly to infinity when the fiber fracture occurred, whereas that of the electrodeposited composite increased relatively broadly up to infinity. As curing temperature increased. logarithmic electrical resistivity of steel fiber increased. On the other hand, electrical resistance of carbon fiber decreased due to the intrinsic electrical properties based on the band theory. The apparent modulus of the electrodeposited composite was higher than that of the untreated composite due to the improved interfacial shear strength (IFSS).
